Old Italian Quilt Blocks

Old Italian Quilt Blocks
3 inch finished

Red is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month. I pulled out my bin with 5 inch squares and pulled out red ones.  Then I put them into piles of 3.  Then I matched up each pile of 3 reds with 3 of some other color 5 inch square.   Then in each stack I alternated a red square with another color square.   Then I followed the tutorial at My Joyful Journey that uses charm squares to make Old Italian or (X Marks the Spot ) blocks.

Yes, some are wonky. They aren't supposed to be but sometimes that's the way it goes. It's all good.

I've been making these little cuties since last year so maybe it's time to take count and figure out what size quilt I want to make.

And sew on...

Slightly wonky makes this a lot more fun, along with the colors. Love it!!

I think wonky blocks just add charm to the look of a quilt! I'm sure old Italian tiles can get pretty wonky, too. Lots pretty color in those blocks!

Love those Italian blocks. Wonky is my middle name so I like those blocks, that’s what makes the quilt sewn by a human being!

the wonky ones are my favorites for sure ')))--I have one group of layer cake blocks leftovers and I may try this one out...when I get my machine back from its tune up--I really miss just being able to sit for a bit and sew...but I am cleaning out a lot..I guess I could do some prep cutting though while missing my Helga..
I just really love this in your reds--so colorful hugs, Julierose

I have always liked this block and yours are so tiny! I used Sharyn Craig's book and made enough blocks for a small quilt.

I always loved this pattern. Last time you showed it, I made a couple of tiny ones and then said what was I thinking trying to sew them. I have an Anita Grossman Solomon book that has the pattern in it and there is a different way to cut it.

Love your blocks! I just finished a quilt using the Old Italian block - made by an old Italian...me!

When I read that the blocks were 3" finished, I started to say to myself "no way would I - oh wait a minute I already did!" But it was just a mini. But it's true though, it took a lot of ripping and re-stitching to try to get it perfect enough for me to be ok with it. That's just the way I am. You've got some beautiful colors there!

I really like how those blocks look, but I can't see myself making them that small. I would have to start with 10" squares. LOL They look great. Using such small pieces, they should be expected to be a little wonky! I didn't notice though. They look good to me.

I adore these little cuties!
And I think they're the perfect size, too. (You know me - 'go small or go home'...)

Last evening I perused Sujata Shah's book (Cultural Fusion) and saw a block/quilt very much like this. Your blocks add to the inspiration to try to make a batch.
