Animal Crackers

Animal Crackers
30 Patches
40 x 60

They are finished!

I actually started making these blocks in September 2020.  I used small animal prints and solids.

Back in my September post I wrote: "I was inspired by Gretchen's (Gretchen's Little Corner) quilt she called Modern Amish and by Nann's (With Strings Attached) 30 patch quilt. Both quilts were inspired by a quilt called Sound Check by John Kubiniec (McCall's, March/April 2014). "

I quilted one with vertical and horizontal lines.

And the other was quilted with diagonal lines.

The backs have animals too.

The theme this month in my sewing space is March Madness (Quilting) Marathon.  I'm going to concentrate on finishing up a lot of the small tops I have in the TBQ (to be quilted) pile.  They will then be donated to:

And sew on...

Animal Crackers

Two Tops Dancing in the Wind
I'm calling them Animal Crackers.
Each top measures 40 x 60.
The blocks contain solids and animal prints.

I actually started making the blocks back in 2020. I've had 43 blocks in my SAR (Some Assembly Required) box for quite some time so I decided to get them out and into tops. I think originally I intended to make a twin sized quilt with the 43 blocks in a 6 x 7 layout. I changed my mind and made two tops instead and now I have 3 blocks left for the orphanage.

I forgot how much I like the size of these 30 patch blocks that measure 10 x 12. That is a good size for making kid's donation quilts. 20 blocks make for a 40 x 60 quilt and 16 blocks make for a 40 x 48 quilt. I'm going to have to make more of these.

Back in September 2020 when I started making blocks I wrote in my blog post:

"I was inspired by Gretchen's (Gretchen's Little Corner) quilt she called Modern Amish and by Nann's (With Strings Attached) 30 patch quilt. Both quilts were inspired by a quilt called Sound Check by John Kubiniec (McCall's, March/April 2014)."

Now I hope to find a couple backings and get these quilted up next month when I have a quilting marathon.

And sew on...

Today, Feb. 9 - I had to venture into town early this morning for an 8 am appt. with my opthamologist. And, oh, birds were everywhere and singing sweetly!

Animal Crackers v. 2

When I finished the top I called Animal Crackers the other day I mentioned in my blog post  that as I was cutting pieces for that quilt I went ahead and cut additional 2.5 inch strips for use in a different block.   That block is a 30 patch. I was inspired by Gretchen's (Gretchen's Little Corner) quilt she called Modern Amish and by Nann's (With Strings Attached) 30 patch quilt. Both quilts were inspired by a quilt called Sound Check by John Kubiniec (McCall's, March/April 2014).

I'll be using solids and animal themed fabrics to make my blocks.

I have two blocks made and strips sewn together for several more.
My OMG (One Monthly Goal) for September is to complete a total of 42 blocks for a 6x7 layout that will measure 60 x 84.
I'll give myself a pat on the back, extra bonus points and a smiley face if I also get the top completed. This is going to be a busy month for me and I'm not sure I'll have all that much time left to sew. Time will tell.

Animal Crackers

It's a new top!
Animal Crackers
42 x 54

I used animal themed fabrics and solids to make six inch (finished) H blocks.

While I had the fabrics out and was cutting 2.5 inch strips I cut extra strips for use in a different block.  You will have to wait to see what that one is. Now that it's cooler again I will be out in the garden more often and I'm now the learning coach for my granddaughter who opted for online learning. That was a good choice for her because she can use the one on one time and she can avoid all the drama that seems to surround her at school. I have the time so volunteered to help out.

Before I Forget

I saw a Confetti quilt someone made. I am always on the lookout for patterns for the wide array of novelty fabrics I seem to have collected over the years and never know how to use in anything but my usual Happy Blocks.

I was in the mood for something new, something easy, something fun, something that would use novelties.  So before I forgot about Confetti I thought I would try a few blocks. with some small critter prints.

I didn't really didn't like the Confetti blocks all that much after I made a few. And I made the one with the dogs in the lower right incorrectly.

Confetti is a free pattern from Timeless Treasures. Each block is really is a set of four of the classic H blocks made all in the same fabrics.

Well, maybe if I just made six inch (finished) H blocks...
So I folded up the sets of four and laid them out to see what that might look like.
Well, maybe...

So I took apart the dog block that was made incorrectly and made a few more blocks with different prints.  Ok. I think I like that better. So, Animal Crackers is now in the works.

And I saw Cynthia making Ice Cream blocks awhile ago and I commented back then that I should make some but I never did and then I saw her finished quilt and remembered that I forgot to make some. So before I forgot again I set about making a few test blocks.  Ok. That will do. Then yesterday I had a lot of fun picking out fabrics to use for the ice cream and before I knew it I had 24 scoops of ice cream made. Now I just have to put the scoops in the cones and make some alternate blocks and I'll have a cool quilt.
