Wonky Log Finish

 Red, White and Blue Wonky Logs

 I made the blocks last year from scraps left after I made several red, white and blue quilt tops. Wonky Logs are always a good way to use some of the shorter and narrower string scraps.  I did not use any foundation. I started with a 1.5 inch red square and just added light and dark scraps around log cabin style until my blocks reached over 9.5 inches. I chose 9.5 inches because that is a size of one of my square rulers. As the blocks grow I kind of set them on top of the ruler to see how wide the final round of scraps need to be.   Then I trim blocks and assemble.  I think I will invest in a 10 inch ruler because most of the donation quilts I make are either 40 x 60 or 60 x 80.  In order to bring this quilt up to a 40 inch width and make it a little longer I added 2.5 inch border around log cabin style. 

 I quilted it on my DSM. I was going to quilt it with some spirals- one of the first "motifs" I ever attempted to FMQ that I now use often.  I've also been wanting to try some Baptist Fan quilting but have been too scared to try. Sooooo....I quilted this in echoed spirals so I could practice some arches similar to a Baptist Fan. I still need lots of practice but I'm not so afraid to try those Baptist Fans anymore. 

The watermelon backing fabric came from a friend. It wasn't quite long enough so I added a gingham scrap unearthed when I was looking for gingham to add to my 30s Churn Dash border.  The burgundy binding came in a bag of bindings from a friend. 

This is another donation quilt that will go to Wrap-A-Smile or Quilts Beyond Borders.

 I started making these six inch blocks way back in 2013 as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge project. I made them from 2.5 inch scraps when I felt the urge and/or had the 2.5 inch scraps in the color of the month. 

 I finished the top in January 2020. And now the quilt is finished.  As you can see I quilted it on my old backup  DSM (main one has not gone into the shop for repair yet) with horizontal and vertical lines. 

 This will be donated to Wrap-A-Smile, a group that provides quilts for both Rotaplast and Alliance for Smiles missions. Rotaplast and Alliance for Smiles. Both of those organizations are committed to helping children and families worldwide by eliminating the burden of cleft lip and/or palate, burn scarring, and other deformities. Unfortunately a lot of the 2020 missions have been postponed.

Dashing Through The 30s

 It's a Top!

 Churn Dash blocks made of 30s reproduction fabrics that finish at 13.5 inches. 

 I used mostly red, green, yellow, blues and browns.  I cut five inch widths of fabrics and used my Easy Angle Ruler to cut the HSTs for the four corners. The Dash sides were made from three 2 x 5 cuts of fabric. That's how I got the 13.5 finished size for the Churn Dashes. 

A finished top was my OMG (One Monthly Goal) for May.

Two Now Stacked, Whacked, Sliced and Topped

 Back on April 26 I posted about four quilts I was working on using stack and whack/slice and dice techniques.   I now have two tops completed. 

Large Hourglass Quilt

63 x 84

 A few years ago I was gifted a package of 11.5 inch squares.  I stacked them and cut on the diagonals and sewed them into Hourglass blocks. And then into a top. 

 And now I have a nice sweet donation quilt top. I think I may have a nice sweet sheet I can use for the back. 

 And now for a top that is not so sweet. 

Critters

 This was made from a gifted package of 10 inch squares of bugs and other critters. 

Wonky Nine Patches

Stack two contrasting squares face up.

Make two vertical slices.

Swap center piece.

Sew together.

Iron toward darker pieces.

Stack two resulting pieces face up again.

Make two horizontal slices.

Swap center piece.

Sew together. 

This was quick, easy and fun to make.  I think I have the perfect piece of flannel for the backing.

Hey, I might even finish these sooner than later...UFO Prevention!!

From Green Scraps

Wedding Rings that finish at 7.5 inches and a couple of 16 patches that finish at 6 inches. 

 Dark green is the May Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month for May. I used most of my green scraps in January when the color of the month was light and bright green but I have accumulated a few green scraps since that time so I sewed them all up into blocks for my current RSC projects.    

 Plus Postage blocks that finish at 10 inches made from 1.5 inch scraps. 

 Wishing Rings that finish at 3 inches. 

Double X Mosaic and Snowballs. Blocks finish at 4 inches. 

I think the rest of this month of green I will try to finish a bunch of RSC tops I have in the pile.  I also need to add a scrappy green border to an old UFO.

#AloneTogether in Little Houses Made of Ticky Tacky

 It's a Finish!

540 little houses that finish at 3 inches. 

 I began making the houses back in July 2018. I was inspired by a Quiltmaker Itty Bitty block called Home Sweet Home.  I say inspired because I made my blocks in a different way but they finished at the same size.   I thought it would be a fun way to use some novelty scraps. Then later on it became a Rainbow Scrap Challenge project and I made houses with 2 inch scraps in the color of the month. 

 My working title for the quilt was always Little Houses Made of Ticky Tacky and that was inspired by Pete Seeger:

Little boxes on the hillside

There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one

I added #AloneTogether to the title after the social distancing campaign and mandate to shelter in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.  (Ooops...I forgot to add a label to this quilt with the title. I wouldn't want to forget this time in my history. )

I'll probably put this quilt in my camper. We sometimes have large family reunion camp outs and there are times when there are lots of little kids around. I've found that sometimes an I Spy type quilt is a fun thing to pull out when the kids get restless. With this one I can ask which house they would like to live in and why or have them pick a house and tell me a story about who lives inside. 

 I quilted it on my DSM with little three petaled flowers. 

This is the pieced back. 

 I've had these house fabrics for ages. I've cut into some of them with smaller prints a few times but I never wanted to cut into the ones with the bigger prints. When I started making the Ticky Tacky Houses I put them aside for this backing.  

I even found a 6.5 house in some swapped I Spy Squares that I added in. 

And after I ran out of house fabrics I dug into the travel themed fabrics and pulled out a big print of buildings to fill in.

And Now For A Dash of Color

 

 

 

 

 

I made several of these large Churn Dash Variation blocks that finish at 13.5 inches in the last week or so. 

I made two blocks last December after I found a pattern from McCall's quilting May/June 2010 designed by Julia LaBaune and Tammy Silvers.  I often make a couple of blocks as the urge strikes so I don't forget that I really want to make something.   I needed some color this past week so I picked it up again to work on.  I'm using my 30s reproduction fabrics.  I'm not following the pattern instructions because I have my own method of making HSTs. I guess the picture was the inspiration.  

Well, anyhow I want to move this forward to a quilt top this month so I'm declaring this my May OMG (One Monthly Goal). I think I have 21 blocks and am working toward 36 blocks in a 6 x 6 layout plus I think I will add a border of gingham for one big quilt.
