A Small Plus (Mind Your Busyness)

It's a top!
A Small Plus
(Mind Your Busyness)
43 x 43

Mottled shade and wind made it difficult to take a good photo.

I started making these blocks back in July 2025. (On that post you can see the actual color or lack of color in the blocks). I had a little box of pastel scraps and someone had just given me quite a few low volume 4.5 inch squares so I decided to make a few plus sign blocks. (Also on that July 2025 blog post I mentioned I had a case of poison ivy. Funny thing...I now have a bad case of poison ivy!)

So...I made 15 blocks and decided I did not like them so put them away for a rainy day when little Cathy wanted to play. I'm not really a fan of pastels or low volume to begin with but this girl who loves scrappy and busy quilts decided these blocks were too busy for me. (Maybe I should have named it Mind Your Busyness???)

Well, here we are today. Since the "color" of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) is pastel I decided to pull out these blocks and do something with them. I made one more block and added some light gray sashing to corral some of that busyness and now I have a little comfort quilt top and an empty little bag of blocks.

And sew on...

We are supposed to get some rain the rest of the week through Wednesday as well as temps reaching 100. We can use the rain because the ground is like cement and anything in bloom has very small flowers probably because according to drought maps our area has been abnormally dry. I can do without the high temps especially since I don't have a/c and with rain there will be humidity.

I finished a book! The Bible of Blackwater County by Jenny Cafaro. Inspired by the story of her great grandmother " The Bible of Blackwater County is a Southern Gothic historical fiction novel that tells the story of Bessie Winter, an Appalachian woman navigating trauma and survival during the Great Depression."

Turning Down The Volume

I have a lot of 4.5 inch low volume squares and I have quite a few scrap chunks of pastels so decided dto make some Plus Blocks that finish at 9.5 inches.

I'm not sure of the layout right now or what size quilt I'm making.
Above is how the blocks look straight set.

Above is how the blocks look offset.

Above is how the blocks look on point.

They all look pretty busy but I think I like the offset layout the best.

Right now I have 15 blocks.

And sew on...

I have a bad case of poison ivy all over my arms. I was weeding a new spot I've cleared and didn't see the poison ivy until it was too late. I did come in and wash with Tecnu Poison Ivy wash but it looks like my bottle of it has expired so maybe it was not as effective.  I have a very painful (as in can hardly walk) arthritis flare up in my left foot. I am pretty sure the flare up is because I had a couple of sugary drinks. I usually drink water or iced tea during the day but decided to try some Sanpellegrino lemonade. I guess I will give away the other four cans.  And so I haven't felt much like sewing or gardening. I have mostly been reading the last few days.

After I finished the Gary Gerlacher medical thriller series I decided to look for more medical thrillers for Kindle and came across medical thrillers by Gary Birken featuring Madison Shaw and Jack Wyatt. I finished Error in Diagnosis.  "A mysterious illness with disturbing symptoms is plaguing pregnant women."  And now I've started the second book in the series.

A Couple Of Partial Block Sets Are Now Complete Block Sets

I think I mentioned that I've been going through orphan blogs and baggies of miscellaneous things I've received from others.  I kind of fell behind on scrap processing this year because of hubby John's health issues but now that the is getting healthier and stronger I am in the mood to empty some boxes and bags.

I came across this baggie someone gave me of 6 inch (finished) blocks. There were 42 of them. I decided 63 blocks would make for a nice kiddo quilt set 7 x 9/ 42 x 54 inches.

There were a variety of different blocks in mostly pinks and blues.  There was only one in the bunch that had a lot of white in it.

I made some H (or I) blocks...

...and I made some Plus Sign blocks...

...and I made some Rail Fence blocks...

...and I made some Nine Patch blocks.  And now I have a complete set of 63 blocks. They are going to rest for awhile in the SAR (Some Assembly Required) box.

And this is another baggie someone gave me of 6 inch (finished) blocks.   It had 22 finished blocks and pieces for a  few more. Again, I thought 63 blocks would make a nice kiddo quilt.

All of the blocks were framed squares (what I call Happy Blocks). There were mostly pink and yellow blocks and a few aqua blocks and one black floral block.

The baggie had some cut pieces so I was able to make 10 blocks to add to the mix.  Then there were 2.5 inch squares left in the baggie that I used as the centers for the rest of the blocks.

Since there was only one block in the finished blocks with a black frame I found some scraps to make a few Happy Blocks with black frames to add to the mix.

And since there were only a few aqua blocks in the finished blocks I made a few mre blocks with aqua frames. And then...

...I made the rest of the blocks I needed with yellow, pink and orange frames.

And now another block set is going into the SAR box.

And sew on...

CELEBRATE! (my word of the year)

Dec. 17 - This is a long one but basically we are celebrating only paying hundreds of dollars instead of thousands of dollars for dental services to treat complications of radiation treatment for cancer.  They were not covered until this year.

Federal Register Medicare and Medicaid Programs CY (Coverage Year) 2024 Payment Policies Under the Physician Fee Schedule...

..."Final Action Statement

As described in the sections above, we are revising § 411.15(i)(3)(i) to add to the list of clinical scenarios under which Medicare Part A and B payment is permitted for dental or oral examinations performed as part of a comprehensive workup prior to, and medically necessary diagnostic and treatment services to eliminate an oral or dental infection prior to, or contemporaneously with, the following Medicare-covered services: chemotherapy, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, and the administration of high-dose bone-modifying agents (antiresorptive therapy) when used in the treatment of cancer. We are also adding a new § 411.15(i)(3)(i)(E) to permit Part A and B payment for dental or oral examination performed as part of a comprehensive workup prior to, medically necessary diagnostic and treatment services to eliminate an oral or dental infection prior to, or contemporaneously with, and medically necessary diagnostic and treatment services to address dental or oral complications after, radiation, chemotherapy, and/or surgery when used in the treatment of head and neck cancer. The policies we are finalizing take into account commenters' feedback and information provided in clinical literature, such as peer reviewed publications or clinical guidelines supported by clinical evidence, supporting the inextricable link between dental services and certain covered medical services. We anticipate making conforming changes to the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual (IOM Pub. 100–02) to reflect the final changes."...

My husband had radiation and chemo for Stage IV for oropharyngeal cancer 20 years ago. Since then he has had many oral problems related to the radiation treatment.  He has had a fibula free flap restoration (jaw replaced with fibula) because his jaw bone became brittle and cracked. He has lost many teeth, had many gum infections and root canals and osteoradionecrosis (bone necrosis) in other jaw. A lot of his dental problems have not been covered by health or dental insurance.   For the past year he has had an infection tthat would not heal as well as the necrosis in his jaw and due to the necrosis the jaw could no longer hold his teeth and one tooth was so brittle it broke off. He was referred to the college of dentistry at the University of Iowa for consultation and biopsy.  They decided he needed three teeth pulled in addition to the biopsy.   We had to sign an ABN (Medicare Advanced  Beneficiary Notice ) for over $5,000 because they didn't think services would be covered.   I came home and researched "osteoradionecrosis" and landed at the Federal Register. ( FYI - I've actually read a lot of articles in the Federal Register over the years. As an I.T. Officer for a group of medical labs and a pathology group I had to make sure our computer systems were in compliance with lots of rules and regulations - most notably the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)).  Well, imagine my surprise when I read that in 2024 dental services for complications related to radiation for head and neck cancers would be covered!  So instead of paying thousands of dollars we ended up paying only hundreds of dollars.   The reason I researched it is so I could be educated in case I needed to file an appeal for a claim denial.

Two Tops

So far, after cleaning off my cutting mat and table last week, I have two tops to show for my efforts.

Broken Dishes
60 x 78

I've been making these six inch blocks off and on since about 2016.  I made them when I had 3.5 inch scraps in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month. If I didn't have any 3.5 inch scraps in the color then I didn't make any blocks.  That's why it sometimes takes me a long time to get to flimsy stage - I wait for scraps to happen.
Scraps happened last week when I cleaned off my cutting mat...
...and found scraps to make 44 more blocks.
And then, in between planting veggies and flowers in between the rains, I assembled this top.  I just sewed blocks together randomly...grab and sew...my grandma's method.

Sometimes I see Stars or Pinwheels in between the Broken Dishes.
I don't know if these 10 inch blocks blocks have a traditional name.  For each block I cut four 4.5 inch squares and four 2.5 inch squares from scraps. From gray I cut two 2.5 inch squares and one 2.5 x 6.5 rectangle.
Assembled top is 40 x 50 and when finished will go to Wrap-A-Smile.

It's a Finish!

 Staying Positive?
On the Plus Side?
The Power of Positive Thinking?

It's a donation quilt so it doesn't need a name.

42 x 54
I started making these six inch blocks way back in 2013 as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge project. I made them from 2.5 inch scraps when I felt the urge and/or had the 2.5 inch scraps in the color of the month.
I finished the top in January 2020. And now the quilt is finished.  As you can see I quilted it on my old backup  DSM (main one has not gone into the shop for repair yet) with horizontal and vertical lines.
This will be donated to Wrap-A-Smile, a group that provides quilts for both Rotaplast and Alliance for Smiles missions. Rotaplast and Alliance for Smiles. Both of those organizations are committed to helping children and families worldwide by eliminating the burden of cleft lip and/or palate, burn scarring, and other deformities. Unfortunately a lot of the 2020 missions have been postponed.

If you would like to join an online guild that supports these organizations as well as Quilts Beyond Borders and many others then join us at Sunshine Online Quilt Guild.
And the back? It's a gently used sheet sent to me by a friend.
And the binding? It's scrappy and from a bag of 2.25 bindings sent to me by a friend.

False Positive

 It's a flimsy!
42 x 54
I started making these six inch blocks back in 2013 from 2.5 inch scraps. I made them off and on over the years as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge project whenever I remembered. Looks like I usually remembered when the color of the month was green.

I have so many sets of blocks that could be assembled into a top so sometimes it's difficult to decide which set to assemble. I'll tell you a little story about why I recently chose to assemble these particular blocks.

A month ago at my Wellness Check I decided to take a less invasive form of a screening test since the doctor has been bugging me for a couple of years to get screened and I have been putting it off. I thought the test would come back negative and that would be the end of that.  But it came back positive. Oh crap! Bum deal, if you get my drift. I had to go ahead and schedule the more invasive form of that screening test. Worry, worry. But...there was a chance I could be one of the 12% false positives. Worry, worry, wait, wait. I decided to do some mindless sewing while waiting for the follow up appointment for diagnostic testing. I saw the Plus Sign blocks. I have sometimes referred to the quilt I would make from them as The Power of Positive Thinking.  (In fact that is how it is listed on my UFO page. ) As I almost mindlessly sewed the blocks together my mantra was "I am a false positive. I am one of the 12%."   Well, I'm glad to say that is true.  It turned out all right in the end and I'm glad that is all behind me, if you get my drift.

Using 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 Inch Scraps

This month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge color is orange. I'm also making blocks this month in last month's color which was aqua.

I dug into the 2.5 inch scrap bin and made some 8 inch Garlic Knot (aka Arrowhead Puzzle) blocks.
I also made a few six inch Plus blocks from 2.5 inch scraps. I've been making these off and on for a few years if I end up with enough 2.5 inch scraps after making other blocks.  I was going to alternate light and dark/bright background but think I might end up with two separate quilts instead.  Working titles -- The Power of Positive Thinking, Nix the Negative, On the Plus Side.
With 3.5 inch scraps I made a Sixteen Patch with Star...
 ...and some Broken Dishes blocks.
With 4.5 inch scraps I made some Half Rectangle Triangles (HRTs).

The Green Green Scraps of Home

Green is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month.  I usually start off a new month with the scrap chunks.  I had a lot of green chunks this year. They have been accumulating since I used them all in 2014-2015 in my 56 Shades of Envy quilt.

I define a chunk scrap as something bigger than a 4.5 inch square and smaller than a fat quarter.

First I put all the fall-ish looking greens aside to be used with a couple of autumn themed UFOs.
I set aside all the light greens to be used in my low volume String Hearts.

If the remaining chunks were big enough to cut pieces for a cat then I made a cat.  I've been using some gray scraps for backgrounds.

Then, since these Double X Variation blocks use different sized pieces (1.5 and 2.5), I cut chunks that were big enough into 1.5 and 2.5 strips and made blocks.   These blocks finish at four inches and this quilt is inspired by a vintage quilt.

I evaluated the rest of the green chunks and cut them into sizes of scraps I keep separated by size - 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and strings.

Then I dug into the green scraps in the 1.5 inch bin and made some little rails. I've been making these for several years so by the end of this year I'll probably have enough for a large and very scrappy quilt.
I've also been making these Bit Coin blocks for years.
I think I have about 58 of them and am aiming for 84 so maybe this will be the year of the Bit Coin quilt too.

After I use a 1.5 inch strip to make the Rails and Bit Coins the remaining piece goes into the Spider Web quilt project box.
Then I dug into the 2.5 inch green scraps and made some Garlic Knots - a new block I started this year.
I also made some Plus blocks from 2.5 inch scraps. I made a few several years ago and then forgot about them so I'm resurrecting this as an RSC project this year.

I keep the 30s repro scraps separate from the other scraps in the 2.5 inch scrap bin.  I had quite a few greens in there so made another Bit Coin block this time using 2.5 inch scraps instead of 1.5.

Next up was the 3.5 inch scrap bin.

The 3.5 inch scraps were also made into some Broken Dishes blocks...
...and some Sixteen Patch stars.
If any remaining 3.5 inch scrap was less than a 3.5 inch square it was sewn into a strip. I've been doing this for a couple of years instead of throwing the pieces into the crumb box.  I think I'm going to have fun playing with a rainbow of scrappy strips one of these days.

I have the 2 inch and 4.5 inch scraps left for the rest of the month.
