A Big Potato Chip, Pastel Wonky Logs and Daylilies

Big Potato Chip

I have been adding rounds of 2 x 3.5 inch rectangles in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month. I'm hoping for maybe a 42 inch square comfort quilt. The "color" this month has been pastels. I added a round of neutrals instead of pastels. Now it measures 21.5 square so I guess I'm halfway to my goal.

Pastel Wonky Logs with Sashing
43.5 x 64.5

After I finished making the Pastel String Top with long strings I started making 9 inch finished Wonky Log Cabin blocks with the shorter pastel strings. I used a 2 inch pink square for the block centers and cornerstones in the sashing.

I used a multicolor pastel piece of fabric that looked like it had paint brush swipes on it for the sashing.

And sew on...

I took some pics of some flowers in bloom in the gardens. There were quite a few so I'll show just the daylilies in this post and the rest in another. Daylilies aren't really a useful flower since they only last a day but there are lots of blooms (if the deer don't eat them) and they add pops of color and bits of joy to the cottage garden. I've had my Daylilies for many years...before the internet, I know. I ordered them from a catalog by mail with a check enclosed. I spent hours going through the catalog reading all the descriptions and trying to decide what to order. I usually settled for the prettiest that my budget allowed. I have divided my daylilies a couple of times since then and haven't ordered any new ones until this year when I bought a legacy pack of 24 Daylilies on sale for $1 each. What varieties I received will be a surprise when they bloom (hopefully) next year.  I did lose some Daylilies one year when a big tree fell on a patch of them when my husband was at a low point in his cancer and couldn't get out to help me cut up the tree. Supposedly the Daylily flowers and buds are edible; however, I have never had the urge to taste test but I'll keep that in mind in case I'm starving someday.  Now they have fancy and rubbly double bloom and reblooming Daylilies at a price I can't afford. And I'm okay with that.  I love what I have.

Green Wonky Log Cabins

Green Wonky Log Cabin blocks
(I've also seen Wonky Log Cabin blocks in one colorway called Duckworth quilts)
6 inch

I need to take count of how many blocks I have now and how many I need for a quilt.

I'm using the smallest of green scraps and ones with straight sides. If they are triangle shaped they go into the crumb pile.  Between the red centers and the greens I'm trying to include a lot of novelty scraps to make it a kind of I Spy quilt.

I was one of the winners of the Stay At Home Round Robin 2026 (SAHRR 2026) random drawing. I won 2 charm packs of my choosing as well as a $50 gift certificate from Fat Quarter Shop.  I can never decide on what fabrics to buy so settled for a yard each of colors of the rainbow as well as 3 yards of muslin I can use with my 30s and civil war reproduction fabrics. And for the charm packs...well, I do love roses and hearts!

I am very thankful to the hostesses of the SAHRR. I have participated for several years. I am also thankful for all of the sponsors especially the Fat Quarter Shop

And my two SAHRR 2026 finishes as well as 20 other quilts will be dropped off today to be shipped via UPS to the coordinator of Wrap-A-Smile.

Wrap-A-Smile partners with   Rotaplast International, Inc.

A Wonky Log Cabin Flimsy

It's a flimsy!
Wonky Log Cabin
48 x 60

This month's theme in my sewing space to move things forward is "strings, crumbs and fodder".  I had a couple of overflowing boxes of strings and after last month's quilting marathon and all the quilt back trimmings my string boxes runneth over.

I started these 12 inch finished blocks last December and made six of them at that time. This week I added 14 more blocks to the mix and assembled the top. I used mostly brights and novelties as well as low volume  strings to make the blocks and all have 2.5 inch red square centers.

And sew on...

More Green Scraps

NOT Disappearing Four Patch
9 inches
Made with solid and shirting scraps

I like the look of Disappearing Four Patch (D4P) blocks but I don't like to make a Four Patch, cut it apart, rearrange pieces and then sew pieces back together again So I just cut pieces and make the end result.

This is the last day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color green. I am anxious to see what new color of scraps I will be sewing with in March.

Uneven Shoofly
10 inch
Made with floral and shirting scraps.
(Just like grandma used to make!)

Streak of Lightning
6 inches
Made with 2 inch squares.
Streaks will be black/white fabrics.

Another Streak of Lightning
9 inch blocks
Made with 2 x 3.5 rectangles
This one takes an A and B block.

Wonky Log Cabin Duckworth Style
6 inch
One color blocks made from scraps will have centers in a complementary color.
New start because this month the theme in my sewing space to move UFOs forward has been "log cabins and variations".  I have a lot more green scraps to sew into Wonky Log blocks but this is all I have managed to make so far.

And sew on...

Finished a book! When the World Fell Silent by Donna Jones Alward. "Historical fiction novel set during the 1917 Halifax Explosion, exploring loss, resilience and hope through the lives of two women."  I had never heard of the Halifax Explosion so I found it interesting at the end of the book to read the author's notes about some facts of the Halifax Explosion.  I liked the book because I like books about bravery and survival and I like historical fiction. I did find the book rather slow moving.

Happy 17th birthday to my grandson Jacob! I witnessed his birth and can't believe 17 years have passed already.

February weather here in Iowa has been weird. We have 60 degree temps one day and below freezing the next. And the ground is very dry so we could use some precipitation but I sure don't want that four feet of snow they have out East.

Here's Looking At You, Kid! A Wonky Log Cabin Finish

Wonky Log Cabin
48 x 63
It's a finish!

I don't name comfort quilts; however, if I was going to name this one I would name it "Here's Looking At You, Kid" because there sure are a lot of little faces of all sorts in this quilt.

I made the top in Feb. 2025 to use some strings. This quilt used the long and wide novelty and bright strings.

I quilted it on my sewing machine with swirls.

The backing and binding.

And now it's ready for donation!
Here's looking at you, kid!

The theme in my sewing space this month to move UFOs forward is "log cabins and variations".  I still have UFOs that fit that theme so stay tuned!

And sew on...

Fields and Furrows Finish

It's a finish!
Fields and Furrows
(Wonky Log Cabin)
45 x 63

I had an overflowing box of strings so I started making Wonky Log Cabin blocks in Feb. 2025.

I quilted it on my sewing machine with swirls of white thread.

The backing and binding are the same fabric.

The theme in my sewing space this month to move UFOs forward is "log cabins and variations".

And sew on...

New String Projects

My boxes of strings are overflowing so time to do something with them. When I fig into strings I make blocks for a couple of different quilts - at least one that uses long strings and at least one that uses shorter strings.
With long strings I am making 12 inch Wonky Log Cabin blocks with red centers and half of the block light. I think I might make a bigger quilt with 30 or 35 nlocks.

I am making String X blocks with shorter strings. Someone gave me those 5 inch squares I will use for the block corners. There were just the right amount of squares so it was meant to be.

Someone gave me twelve 10.5 inch half triangles of a gray floral. I used them as half of a string block and the gray will be a String Star background. I went to assemble the little String Star top and am missing two blocks, darn it. I have been processing a lot of scraps, organizing orphan blocks, parts and partially finished projects from others as well as piecing backings so who knows where my missing blocks are.

And sew on...

Another Small Finish

It's a finish!

36 x 41

Someone gave me some Wonky Half Log Cabin blocks.

I just had to put them together android add borders to make a small top. And then I quilted with a few swirls.

And now it is ready for donation.

And sew on...
