It's A Flimsy! Flower Baskets

It's a flimsy!
It's a top!
Flower Baskets
65 x 78

The May theme in my sewing space to move UFOs forward is "Baskets".

I love Basket quilts and had Googled "flower basket quilt" or something like that and when I clicked on the image I liked my Norton Antivirus came up with the message that it was a malicious site so I drafted my own pattern from the picture.  I made 9 inch finished blocks from scraps.

The complete block set has been in my SAR (Some Assembly Required) bin for quite some time so all I had to do was assemble but before I could do that I had to figure out what to use for side setting triangles.  I usually don't have a lot of pieces of fabric over a yard so I was thinking I might have to go with some scrappy flowers for the side setting triangles. I looked in a little box of floral fabrics and that multiflowered piece that was left over from yardage I used long ago for a backing practically jumped into my arms. I didn't have quite enough but with a little "poverty piecing" I made it work. It was meant to be.

And sew on...

REMEMBER, TREASURE, GROW, READ (my words of the year)

I've finished two books from the 8 books in the Resistance Girls series by Hannah Byron.  -- In Picardy's Fields and The Diamond Courier.

I've been so busy working in the gardens as weather permits - weeding, planting, sowing. Ended up with "tennis elbow" from repetitive motion using a garden hand tool with fork on one side and hoe on the other. Also chipped my front tooth when I bit off a torn fingernail. (My other front tooth was chipped when I was a freshman in high school and someone pushed my head into the water fountain while I was drinking.) Took pics of what I thought were two wild turkeys roosting on barn roof but then thought they might have been turkey vultures. I was going to study pics closer but ended up accidentally deleting them, darn it.  Been harvesting, eating and sharing asparagus from the garden. I was looking through a lot of my old cookbooks for new recipes for asparagus and noticed a lot of old recipes use asparagus in egg dishes. I also have shared some of my rhubarb crop but havent used any yet myself. Since John can't eat I hate to make a whole rhubarb dessert for myself.

Hubby John on antibiotic and steroid after they saw something on his chest Xray. He has swallow test on Wed. to see if speech therapy will help him learn to swallow food/drink without aspirating. He sure hopes so!

Thanks for all of your comments the last few posts. I promise I'll reply soon!

More Flower Baskets

I've been outside most of the last couple of days working in the gardens. Today I started outside early because I knew it was going to be a very warm afternoon. It is 85 degrees right now. I've been planting lots of flowers so maybe in a month or so I'll have real flowers ready for some baskets.  For now I have settled for Flower Basket quilt blocks.  Now I only need to make 10 more blocks to reach my goal of 50.

Some of you asked about a pattern. I drafted my own. Last year I googled "flower basket quilt block" or something like that and ended up with the above image but when I went to click on the link my antivirus program popped up with a message that the site was malicious. So I didn't go there. I did like the block so I copied off the picture and wrote my own notes that mostly pertain to cutting.  I don't really need assembly instructions.

Some of you leave such lovely comments but are "no reply" which means either you don't have your email listed with your google profile or you don't leave it in the comment. I'd like to reply to your lovely comments but can't if I don't have an email addy. So anyway, thank you if you have lately left a comment on any blog post.

And sew on...

Yellow 3.5 Plus 2

Antique Tiles
They finish at 9 inches.

This week I was working with yellow scrap chunks. Off of each chunk I cut a 3.5 inch piece and a 2 inch piece. Then I made a bunch of blocks that contain both 3.5 plus 2 inch pieces.

Dove in the Window
They finish at 7.5 inches.

X+
They finish at 7.5 inches.

Flower Baskets
They finish at 9 inches.
Baskets are in the color of the month and flowers are floral scraps from the 2 inch scrap bin I'm trying to clean out.

Propellers
They finish at 7.5 inches. And, yes, I see one that needs to be fixed.
Backgrounds are gray scraps, all centers will be black multicolor squares and all ends will be red squares -- both reds and blacks came from the 2 inch scrap bin.

Uneven Nine Patches
They finish at 6 inches.
Neutral sides came from the 2 inch scrap bin.

Buckeye Beauties
They finish at 6 inches.
I have been combining the color of the month with shirts or dark multicolor scraps.

Last week Miss Pat commented "Lots of buttery yumminess. Lets make popcorn."
Well, Miss Pat, did you find the popcorn this week? I did have a small scrap of it!

Purple Passion

This week's Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks are all made from 3.5 and 2 inch scraps. Since I emptied my 3.5 inch scrap bin a few months ago I cut the 3.5 inch pieces for these blocks from a scrap chunk and then try to use it all up in various blocks. That is why I decided to make several blocks using 3.5 and 2 inch pieces.

I started making these Buckeye Beauty blocks a few months ago to use up a box of shirt scraps and some black multi-color scraps.  I'll combine them with scraps in the RSC color of the month.

I also started making these baskets of flowers a few months ago. The baskets will be in the RSC color of the month and the flowers will be floral 2 inch scraps.

I've already pulled all of the floral prints for the baskets out of the 2 inch scrap bin as part of my effort to empty that bin and I cut a square and two HSTs out of each piece that was long enough. So each month I just need to pick out some flower pieces for each basket. When these run out I'll reach into the scrap chunks for a floral 2 inch scrap.

This month I started making some X and + blocks using a tutorial found at Badskirt.  I used the tutorial in the past to make a quilt out of cherry themed fabrics and I've always had it in mind to make a scrappy one. Now I don't have to keep that in mind anymore.

And finally I made some Uneven Nine Patch blocks with 3.5 inch centers and 2 inch sides.  This was another new start this month.

Now all I have left to deal with for the rest of the month are purples in the 2.5 inch scrap bin.
