Quilted on my DSM

 This was inspired by a vintage quilt.  

You can read about that and more on my previous post in April when I finished the top. 

 I just did some simple horizontal, vertical and diagonal line quilting following (for the most part) along the lines of some parts of the quilt. 

 It hasn't been washed and dried so it will get a little crinklier with shrinkage when that happens. I just have a wringer washer (I'm not complaining. I actually enjoy doing laundry) but it is difficult to get enough water out of it to put it in the dryer and I don't want to hang it on the line that wet so I'll take it  and several other large quilts to the laundromat one of these days. 

This is one I'll rotate and use on our bed. Our old farm house is mostly heated by a wood stove and sometimes that goes out on a cold winter night (again, not complaining...) so it's nice to hunker down under a pile of quilts when that happens. Of course then we never want to get out of bed and start the fire. 

I used the same fabric for the binding as I used for the sashing but I didn't have quite enough...

 ...so I grabbed a long scrap of a brown fabric from the 2.5 inch scrap bin. 

And the backing was a solid brown thrift store sheet.  A great bargain at $2.50.

I started this in 2014 as a Quilt Along where everyone chose their own version of Drunkard's Path,  fabrics, size, etc.    I used a paper template and cut by hand the pieces for my six inch blocks because curves and a rotary cutter in my hands don't get along.  I chose polka dots and stripes for my fabrics because I had made a much loved Shoofly quilt using the same which started with swapped blocks. 

 Back in 2014 I made about 30 blocks and quit.   Fast forward to 2017 and I decided to move forward and make 224 blocks for a big quilt (14 x 16 layout). I made it my goal to make 12 blocks a week for however many weeks it took.  In March 2018 it became a flimsy. 

I took advantage of some cooler weather to work on finishing this big quilt on my DSM in the house with no a/c.   I used the Wayward quilting design found at Christina Cameli's blog, A Few Scraps. 

It was a lot of fun and pretty easy to do on my DSM with the dinky throat - far less boring than straight line quilting on a big quilt. 

I used a polka dot and a stripe fabric from stash on the back. I meant to make it into a four patch but never got that far when I got everything out to pin baste.  And so it goes...

I was inspired by a picture of a Tula Pink quilt called Chipper.  It's a basic 12 inch Birds in the Air block set on point.  Although she has a free pattern you can use if you are so inclined I made the blocks my own way plus made my quilt a bit larger. 

I found it a great way to use some of the larger print pansy fabrics I've had in my stash for quite some time. 

I quilted it on my DSM with horizontal and diagonal lines basically stitching a quarter inch inside the triangles that are the color of the outside triangles (if that makes sense?)  I had some variegated Coat's and Clark's machine quilting threads on hand but wasn't sure if I had enough of either so I used a purple variegated on the front and...

...an aqua, pink, yellow, purple variegated thread in the bobbin. 

I found just enough fabric for the backing stashed in my butterfly fabric box.  In fact the quilt width just fit inside those dotted lines on each selvage. And I had just enough of a purple solid for the binding. 

The quilt looks like it could be reversible. 

This one is for my bed now.  I'll bet it feels great in the morning to wake up surrounded by pansies.  (Or to see it at the foot of the bed since I don't have a/c so don't really use quilts in the summer).

I started making blocks back in 2013 after seeing it on Q is for Quilter.  Martha had seen a vintage quilt and then graciously broke down the block into a postage stamp grid.  I made a block each month as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge project.  The top was finally put together in 2015.

I used all scraps to make the quilt.  I hand quilted stitching a crosshatch pattern.  I didn't stitch through the flower or leaves, the shoes, the legs, the arms or the balloons. So they all kind of stand out a little.  I used Coats and Clarks white hand quilting thread for the background and 2 strands of variegated embroidery thread for the dress, sock, bonnet and borders. 

 At first I was going to bind it with solids in colors of the rainbow but at the last minute I decided it needed a white binding instead. I found enough of a white with Vs that look a little like hearts in my stash to use. 

And the backing?  You're my end of the rainbow! 

All this work on a baby quilt?  It's for someone special. It's going into the hope chest for a great grandchild I may or may not ever meet.  (It will probably be awhile...the oldest grandchild is 13 years old).
