Quilted on my DSM

 This was inspired by a vintage quilt.  

You can read about that and more on my previous post in April when I finished the top. 

 I just did some simple horizontal, vertical and diagonal line quilting following (for the most part) along the lines of some parts of the quilt. 

 It hasn't been washed and dried so it will get a little crinklier with shrinkage when that happens. I just have a wringer washer (I'm not complaining. I actually enjoy doing laundry) but it is difficult to get enough water out of it to put it in the dryer and I don't want to hang it on the line that wet so I'll take it  and several other large quilts to the laundromat one of these days. 

This is one I'll rotate and use on our bed. Our old farm house is mostly heated by a wood stove and sometimes that goes out on a cold winter night (again, not complaining...) so it's nice to hunker down under a pile of quilts when that happens. Of course then we never want to get out of bed and start the fire. 

I used the same fabric for the binding as I used for the sashing but I didn't have quite enough...

 ...so I grabbed a long scrap of a brown fabric from the 2.5 inch scrap bin. 

And the backing was a solid brown thrift store sheet.  A great bargain at $2.50.

It's a flimsy!

I was inspired by a picture of a vintage quilt from the Jim Tharpe collection posted by Audrey of Quilty Folk. 

I did not know the block name but figured out from the photo how to make the blocks. 

Later Dot (aka abelian who is a no-reply blogger so I couldn't say thanks) left me a comment saying the block name according to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia #1911 is Buffalo Ridge by Nancy Cabot or Grandmother's Fancy.   #1912 is Buffalo Ridge or Country Roads - the only difference between #1911 and #1912 is whether or not the block sashing is the same size as the quilt sashing. 

Although I didn't use it I did find free block instructions at Quilter's Cache for a Country Road block if anyone is interested. 

Nann of With Strings Attached  had suggested to me at one time that a good name for one of my quilts might be Salmagundi.   (The definition? a general mixture; a miscellaneous collection).   And so Country Roads turned into Salmagundi Road as a name for my quilt. 

I used a lot of chunk scraps and men's shirts from the thrift store to make the quilt in warm colors. 

I first made 25 blocks with the intention of adding sashing wider than the 2.5 sashing within the block.  I couldn't find enough of any fabric I had on hand to use for the sashing so made 11 more blocks with the intention to go without sashing between blocks.  But then I decided I didn't like the blocks without sashing. 

I finally decided on a narrow dark brown (Kona Coffee, I think) sashing.  I didn't add it around the outside edges but I have enough Kona Coffee left for the binding. 

Getting this sashed and to flimsy stage was my April One Monthly Goal (OMG). so I will link up to the Elm Street Quilts OMG finishing party at the end of the month. 

The Sashing of Salmagundi Road

Back in December I had finished making 25 fourteen inch Country Roads blocks.  I'm calling my quilt Salmagundi Road.   The blocks were inspired by a vintage quilt from the Jim Tharpe collection.  The vintage quilt has sashing which appears to be wider than the sashing piece in the blocks.  I WAS going to add sashing that was about 2.5 inch wide or larger.  So I auditioned several pieces I had on hand.  This was the one I liked best.  But after figuring how much fabric would be needed I found I didn't have enough. 

 Then I tried this one.  Too light. And I don't think I have enough of it either. 

 So then I tried this one.  No. It's not right.  And I probably don't have enough of this fabric either. 

Ok. Maybe. 

Why don't I just make more blocks to get a bigger quilt? I have plenty of small pieces and scraps. Then I won't add sashing. Just because the quilt that inspired me has it doesn't mean I have to add it.  I don't like adding sashing anyway and I do love piecing. 

Hey! - I'll use the auditioned fabrics for a pieced backing. 

So I made more blocks. 

I made 11 more blocks for a total of 36 blocks which in a layout 6 x 6 would make a quilt 84 x 84. 

Then I went to sew them together. 

And, darn it,  I think they need sashing. 

And now that I have more blocks maybe I'll make a narrow sashing - 1.5 inch maybe. 

 Ok. Maybe I need to add a solid. How about dark brown?  Yes, maybe! 

Or lighter brown? 

How about terracotta? 

So...my OMG (One Monthly Goal at Elm Street Quilts) is to decide on a sashing and cornerstones and get these blocks assembled into a top.

Salmagundi Road

I finished the last 12 of 25 blocks for a quilt I'm now calling Salmagundi Road. 

The inspiration for this quilt came from a photo of a vintage quilt in the Jim Tharpe collection that Audrey of Quilty Folk posted. 

Next step is sashing. I'm not sure I have enough of the fabric I have in mind so not sure if I'll use several different ones or what. I'll probably make the sashing smaller than what is shown in the inspiration photo.

I was originally calling this quilt Blazin' Hot because those words appeared in the fabric in one of the blocks I made earlier and I had no better name at that time. 

Then Nann of With Strings Attached  commented on another one of my wild quilts that Gallimaufry or Salmagundi would be a good name for one of my quilts.  Ok, Nann...

Salmagundi Road it is!  You will see my Gallimaufry blocks in a couple of days.

The Birds and the Bees or Where Do Quilts Come From, Grandma?

Four more 14 inch Blazin' Hot blocks. 

I didn't know the name of this block when I started making them so gave them the name Blazin' Hot since I saw that printed in one of the fabric pieces I used to make the first blocks.  Of course this is just the gestation period so the name is subject to change until the quilt is finished (born). 

  I was inspired by a picture Audrey (Quilty Folk) posted of a vintage quilt in the Jim Tharpe collection that she saw when she went to a quilt show.    You know you need a little love before you go making a quilt. 

I'm not very clever at making quilt patterns but I've had enough quilting experience to figure out how to make a lot of blocks that inspire me.  This was one of them.  

I usually make a few blocks while I am inspired (the twinkle in the eye stage) so I don't forget about making a new quilt.    At that time I was working with men's shirts from the thrift store making my kaleidoscope blocks so grabbed a few shirt parts (pistils) and a few florals (stamens) and made  quilt blocks. Whoopee!!    (Maybe that should be the quilt name). 

Ok...no comments that shirt parts can be stamens and florals pistils. Maybe...but this is my story and it has been written. 

And now there are 10. 

I will add a sashing that's a little wider (maybe 3 inch???)  between blocks like the inspiration quilt.  I think I have the perfect piece for that - leftover quilt backing.   I just need to figure out size of the quilt now. I like to give birth to big babies.
