Vintage Inspired Finish: Double X and Snowballs

It's a finish!
Double X and Snowballs
48 x 64

(Good thing I took the pictures a few days ago. It snowed all day yesterday and we have several inches on the ground now.)

Inspired by the vintage quilt,  I started making these blocks as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project to use scraps back in 2019. Since I was making them from scraps and sometimes I had to wait for scraps to happen it took me two years to collect enough blocks for a quilt. The background was a piece of aging mint green yardage begging to be used.  The number of four inch blocks I made for this quilt was determined by how many blocks I could make with the mint green yardage.   I actually had to "poverty piece" some mint fabric in order to have enough to finish up blocks.

October 2020 I had 96 Snowballs and 96 Double X blocks and out of background. At 48 x 64 that's a little smaller quilt than I wanted but so it goes. At that point the block set went into my SAR (Some Assembly Required) box.

And now in 2023 it is quilted and finished! Gosh, it only took four years to make this quilt!

I quilted it on my DSM with diagonal lines in lime thread.

The binding is the same as the backing.

The backing is a green floral that looked kind of vintage-y to me.

And sew on...

This is beautiful, Cathy. Love the mint green, it really sets off all the different coloured scraps. A definite winner! Good size too

You have a lot of patience to make that many little 4" blocks. It's a nice size nap quilt.

Tiny 4in pieced blocks, way too small for me! But if course you met the challenge beautifully and this beautiful quilt is the result!

I didn't realize the blocks were so small until I saw the size of the clothespins. Wow! Those are small blocks! I love how it looks though. Who would have thought that those 2 blocks went so well together? I love the original quilt and love yours too. Congrats on getting an old but wonderful UFO done! ;^)

I think it's charming! Small quilts are perfect for kids, for lap quilts and just as loved as the big ones.

Cathy, this is a beautiful quilt! I love what the snowball blocks add to the design of the Double X. So much more than just a plain block. Great finish!

Absolutely wonderful! You captured the vintage beauty but added a lot of color (and my grandmother's favorite alternate block green).

I always have a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that these are 4" blocks! They look so much larger - and goodness knows they'd be easier to make in a larger size!
Gorgeous quilt!

I love this one. Those Quartersquare triangles are so putsy, but they look great in quilts. I may have to borrow this idea. I had to make the photo bigger to catch where the snowballs were, but I get it now.
Quilts in snow are also a good display. When DH and I drove south on 35 we noticed that the snow ended just about at the Minnesota/Iowa border. Not now! I will know if the snow has melted when we drive back next weekend.
Not time for planting yet!
