I started making the blocks in 2023 as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project. Each block is made with rectangles 4.5 x 5 inch - two each of the background and other fabric. Then they are stacked right side up, cut and shuffled and then sewn together. 

In August 2024 I decided to see how many blocks I had and how many comfort quilts I could make from all the blocks I made from scraps up to that point.  I divided blocks into four piles -- novelty, geometrics, florals and pink/black.  

In August of this year I assembled the top. 

I quilted it on my DSM with swirls of gray.

I used up a lot of scrap chunks of gray for three backgrounds. 

I bought a bolt of black and white crazy daisies to use as the backing for several quilts. This is quilt #3 and I have enough for another one with a little bit left over.

I used lots of gray scraps for the backgrounds.

And I used lots of pink and black scraps in the making of the 8 inch blocks.

Each block takes four 4.5 x 5 rectangles - two each of background and pink or black. 

I made a lot of different Wonky Windmill blocks in all colors of scraps as one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) projects last year. I divided the blocks into 4 groups for four comfort quilts -  this pink and black, geometrics, florals and novelties. The novelty one has already been finished and donated.

Made with two 4.5 x 5 rectangles of gray and two 4.5 x 5 rectangles of a color. I've been making these blocks for  couple of years as a RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) project. I wanted to use a lot of gray scrap chunks and 4.5 inch width scraps. With a lot of RSC blocks I just make a pile of blocks and then decide what to do with them. When I had a pile of these I divided them up into smaller piles and so far I have completed a set of black and pink ones, a set of novelties and a set of geometrics and solids.  This is the floral set and the goal is 63 for a layout of 7 x 9 for a finished 56 x 72 inch comfort quilt. 

Orange is the June RSC color of the month so I made four blocks with orange florals (loosely translated). 

I noticed I was close to my goal of 63 blocks so looked around in my 4.5 inch width scraps for some florals. While sorting scraps in the past I actually had set aside a few scraps in the box just to use in these blocks. 

I was scraping the bottom of the gray scrap chunk bag to finish up these blocks. I did empty out the bag. 

So now I have met my goal of 63 blocks and the complete block set will go into the SAR (Some Assembly Required) bin. The top will be assembled at  later date. 

Going where the scraps take me and enjoying the journey.

Coneflowers are starting to bloom. A couple of years ago I bought a few different ones at an end of year clearance sale. There are so many varieties of them to choose from now but I think the native Purple Coneflower is my favorite.

I've been making Crooked Rail blocks since about the middle of last year. I'm using a dark and light scrap in the RSC color of the month. I'm using 3 and/or 3.5 inch width scraps and cutting rectangles 3 x 3.5. Each block uses 8 rectangles each of two different fabrics.   I have several of Kathy Doughty's books and she uses these stack and whack wonky units in several of her quilts; however, she doesn't have any Crooked Rail blocks like these in her books. I make the units and have used them in lots of different ways.

For the geometric,etc. pile of blocks.

Made with 4.5 inch width scraps; 4.5 x 5 inch rectangles. These are the same type of units used in the Crooked Rails. 

I made a bunch of the blocks in the RSC color of the month plus gray scraps. Last year I made a big stack of them and then divided them into piles for different quilts. I have already made the Wonky Windmill top with the novelty blocks but I need a few more blocks for the geometric, etc. pile and a few more blocks for the floral pile and then I will be finished with these blocks. My goal to use up a lot of small gray scrap chunks has been already accomplished.

I've been using 2.5 x 4 inch scraps in the RSC color of the month and 2.5 inch black squares to make these units. Intent is to use shorter lengths of 2.5 inch width scraps.

I started making the blocks as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project back in 2023 from 4.5 or 5 inch width scraps in the RSC color of the month. I had a little box of different gray scrap chunks I used as the background. Each block takes two 4.5 x 5 rectangles of the background fabric and windmill fabric and yields a 8.5 inch unfinished block. 

By mid year 2024 I had quite a stack of blocks and divided them into piles for four quilts - three twin sized and this child sized with mostly novelties. I need to make a few more blocks to add to a couple of the piles. I assembled this top back in August 2024.  

I quilted it on my sewing machine with swirls.  It was one of the first things I tried many years ago when I ventured into freemotion quilting on my sewing machine so it seems to go pretty fast after all these years of doing it. 

I added a scrappy gray binding. 

This is the pieced backing.  Looks kind of like a giant pillowcase.

Now it is ready for donation to Wrap-A-Smile.  There has recently been an urgent call for quilts because there are more upcoming Rotaplast missions than prevously anticipated. That's a good thing.

"Rotaplast International, Inc. is committed to helping children and families worldwide by eliminating the burden of cleft lip and/or palate, burn scarring, and other deformities. Working with local professionals, Rotarians, and other organizations, Rotaplast sends multidisciplinary medical teams to provide free reconstructive surgery, ancillary treatment, and training for the comprehensive care of these children." Wrap-A-Smile provides each child undergoing surgery with a quilt. 

I have donated quilts to Wrap-A-Smile since 2013 (I think) and every once in awhile it is fun to spot a quilt I made with a child. I just added a page at the top of my blog with pics of kids around the world with a quilt I've made.

Oh Scrap! at Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

REMEMBER, TREASURE, GROW, READ (my words of the year)

Yesterday I received a box with scraps and backings from Ann. 

Yesterday I received my order from a big sale at Stark Bros. - a peach tree to replace my old one that has been slowly dying, a seedless grape vine and two different apple trees because I couldn't pass by apple trees for $18.16 especially when one is one of my fav apples - Honeycrisp. The other is Golden Delicious and isn't too bad either. I guess I have today's work cut out for me but it's supposed to rain.   

 

Where Did Those Yellow Scraps Go?

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color this month is yellow. At the beginning of the month I didn't think I had very many yellow scraps; however, here it is another week and I'm still using yellow scraps.

I now have 29 toward my goal of 35. 

I have a box of 4 inch width scraps I want to empty and this is one of the blocks I'm making with the longer scraps.

I now have 48 blocks toward a goal of 88.

These are also made with 4 inch width scraps.

16 Patch

I set aside a few red, blue and yellow novelties to use in this quilt. I also try to match up the novelty with a scrap from the 3 inch width scrap box if I can. If not I cut from a scrap chunk. 

I only need four more blocks toward my goall of 24. Maybe (or maybe not) I will make up the other four this week and get that top assembled. 

A couple more 16 Patch in red, blue, yellow. 

After I cut a 3 inch width piece off of that chunk of yellow fabric with colorful lizards I had a 2 inch width strip left so I made a couple of six inch 16 Patches alternating with green for my collection that now numbers 111 blocks. My goal is 120 or 130. Gosh, maybe (or maybe not) this week I will make 9 more 16 Patch blocks and make a top. I'll have to look at what I have in 2 inch width strips.

Last year when I was working on emptying out a box of 3 inch width scraps I made a lot of tops. I didn't get around to finishing this one up but kitted up 5.5 inch (unfinished) orphan blocks with 3 inch width scraps to be used for the star points. These were the ones that had yellow scraps for the points. I only have 5 more blocks to make. Maybe (or maybe not) this week???

From a Youtube video. I rarely watch them because my computer takes forever to load them and then they are sometimes broken up; however, someone sent me the link so thought I would check it out. 

These units finish at 2.5 x 8.5 and consist of two 3 x 6 inch rectangles. 

The units get staggered a little so there are no seams to match.   I will be adding a 3.5 inch unfinished scrappy border. 

I now have 64 toward my goal of 88 (I think).
