It's hand quilted!

The garden started way back in July 2021. I received 15 flowers and hexie seeds for 15 more flowers from Nann who received them from Barb who received them from Fran who started the garden. I'm not sure when Fran started Fran's Fancies but most of the fabrics appear to be old 1960s or 1970s calicoes. But I'm no expert on dating fabrics. 

After I assembled 15 Fran's Fancy flowers to add to the 15 Fran made I appliqued them to 13.5 inch neutral floral backgrounds with blanket stitch and 2 strands of variegated embroidery threads.  I've had all 30 blocks in my Some Assembly Required (SAR) bin for awhile and decided to get them out and make a top last month and start the hand quilting.  (Last month the theme in my sewing space was 1930s and Grandmother's Flower Garden is a pattern from the 1930s). 

I hand quilted around the flowers with  ecru perle #12.  I then hand quilted inside the flowers with three strands of variegated embroidery threads.   Then for fun in the center of the flowers I tied in some yellow embroidery thread stamens. 

The binding is an off white floral. 

Oh, I almost forgot...I hand quilted in some flowers in between the Fran's Fancies.  I used 3 strands of and all different colors of variegated embroidery threads to do that. 

I used bleached muslin for the back so all that hand quilting would show up. 

Fran's Fancies are in bloom!

A Fine And Dandy Finish!

And it is hand quilted.

(Pictures were taken several days ago before yesterday's big snow storm.)

I finished the top back in December 2020.   The center blocks were orphans. The Flying Geese and coping strip were scraps and the fabrics used are '30s reproductions. 

The block is called The Dandy Quilt and the pattern for it is at Quilter's Cache. 

I hand quilted it with blanc perle cotton #12.

The binding is scrappy.

The back is a sweet floral.

I must really like The Dandy Quilt block. I've made several Dandy Quilts over the years and I also have an incomplete block set made with floral scraps.

Finished: A Garden of Hexagon Roses

All of the hexagon and connecting triangles are rose prints. For the hexagons I tried to keep with darker more vintage-y looking prints. The connecting triangles are small prints in cream or white. 

I hand quilted it (big stitching) with perle cotton #12 in a cream color.

I thought I was going to have a problem binding the top and bottom zig zaggy edges. I tried a single fold binding for the first time as that was what was suggested in the instructions and had no problems thank goodness. 

This one is for me. I just love roses and have made quite a few quilts with rose prints. 

 I enjoyed hand quilting this one. I just stitched about 1/4 inch inside each hexagon and triangle. I didn't mark anything just used my eyeballs to judge where to stitch. It's just for me and I don't mind if a few lines aren't all that straight or exactly 1/4 inch from seam line. 

I pieced the back. Again...rose prints.

This is one of my oldest UFOs. I started it waaaaaay back in 2014. I had some '30s reproduction fabric scraps and was inspired by a vintage Ocean Waves quilt I saw on a blog that no longer exists. I used block instructions found at Quilter's Cache for the layout of HSTs but otherwise didn't use the block instructions. I made 2.5 inch HSTs my way - cut with Easy Angle ruler. 

It took me until 2018 to get the blocks to flimsy stage.  I made a few blocks each year between 2014 and 2018. I think I waited for '30s repro scraps to happen before I made the HSTs. 

I finally put it in the hoop for hand quilting last month. I looked around on the internet at vintage Ocean Waves quilts in order to figure out just how to quilt it.  I used perle #12 blanc thread and my stitches are a little bigger than vintage ones but the end result looks pretty much the same.

The block is Blind Man's Fancy. I used a free pattern by Beth Donaldson.

I used lots of rose and tea themed fabrics so that is why I called my quilt Blind Man's Fancy Tea in the Rose Garden. 

Lots of hand quilting and a scrappy binding. What are the odds that part of the scrappy binding would end up next to a Flying Geese sashing in the same fabric? That happened in two places. 

I wish I could show you some photos of roses in my rose garden but the deer must have had them on the menu this week because after rains for a couple of days  I went out and found all my rose buds gone and most of the rose bushes eaten down to the ground. I saw three little Bambis out there in the middle of the day making a bleating sound. They may be the culprits.  Usually I don't see deer in the middle of an afternoon. I didn't know deer made any bleating sounds so looked up and found that may mean they have lost their mother. If only they would lose their appetite!!

This is a Wild Rose which is the state flower of Iowa. Actually it is an invasive weed but I just let this one grow where a fairy planted it over in a shady area near the barn under some trees where not much else grows. Deer evidently don't find them as delicious as my cultivated roses. 

Well, back to the quilt. This is the pieced backing. 

Look closely and you will see women at a tea party!  I bought this fabric a long time ago when Hancock Fabrics was going out of business and finally found the perfect use for it.

 The title of the book is true - lots of small pieces were used in this quilt.  

I used what I thought were autumn colored scraps and neutrals. 

The arcs were foundation pieced on phone book pages and appliqued to the background fabric. 

For quilting on the background fabric  I used a variety of cardboard templates that looked kind of pumpkin-peelish.  These were in a box of miscellaneous items my daughter found at a garage sale. I used indigo thread I had on hand.  On the arcs I did big stitching with ecru perle #8. 

I wasn't sure I really liked the indigo thread at first but it grew on me so I carried on. 

When it came time for the binding I found some indigo fabric with aqua "flowers" that appeared to me Jacobean like the background flowers.  I guess it was meant to be. 

 I'm really short on backings so pieced one together from some butterfly fabrics. 

And so it goes. 

I can mark another UFO off the list!

Machine pieced and hand quilted

I quilted with big stitching in a variety of threads from my stash -variegated brown perle #5 and perle #8, light brown 20 wt. 

I didn't mark any quilting lines. I just eyeballed about 1/4 inch inside each geese and then stitched in the ditch around the sashing and then stitched lines about 1/4 inch away from each other inside the sashing. 

I used a chocolaty brown muslin for the backing and it's kind of fun that you can see all of the stitching echoed on the back. 

It's been cold in these here parts lately so I'm ready now to cover myself in chocolate!

Petunias - a Finish !!!

From an Anna Maria Horner pattern called Spinning Stars.

I renamed it Petunias because the shape and some of the colors (pink and yellow) reminded me of Petunias I have on my deck. 

Most of the fabrics are left over from a Pickle Dish Wedding Quilt I made for my granddaughter's hope chest. 

Blocks are 18 inches. 

It is all hand quilted in pink thread.  In the wedges I alternated lines out and lines across.  Oh, it gives such a lovely texture (along with a callous on the middle finger of my left hand). 

In the secondary star pattern I just stitched around each section and in alternate sections stitched around twice. 

It's such a busy quilt I wondered if any of the hand quilting would really show. I'm glad I hand quilted and pleased with the results. 

 This might be a Christmas gift for one of the granddaughters next year.  It's the perfect size for a twin bed. I can't give it this year because I don't have one finished for the other granddaughter.  

I had family in town for a nephew's wedding - some from CA and some from FL and some from several states in between.   I took some time off of work and sat around and hand quilted during the times everyone was here visiting and not playing games. I love to play games almost as much as I love to hand quilt. 

And here's the wild back.  I pieced together two sections of sale fabric matching up the chevrons so it looks like a wide backing.
