Farmer's Wife Samper Finish

It's a finish!

Farmer's Wife Samper
66 x 84

Most blocks can be found in the book Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird.

The actual Farmer's Wife Samper has 111 six inch finished blocks. I think I made about half of those blocks.  In March 2023 I dug out the blocks and made a decision to do something with them.   I decided to use an Hourglass as an alternate block. I counted my blocks and decided I needed a few more. I had belonged to a 30s Reproduction Yahoo Group that swapped blocks made in 30s repros so found a few six inch orphan blocks from previous swaps that would fit the theme.

And here we are in October 2026 and I finally have a finished top. This is one of my oldest UFOs.  I quilted it on my sewing machine with horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.

I added a scrappy binding.

And sew on...

Fabulous quilt. My eye first sees a square in a square and then wanders to find squares with hourglass. Love the green!

Lovely quilt and a great way to use blocks just sitting around, waiting to be made into a quilt. Pefect for a lap quilt, happy stitching!

Congrats on finishing an old UFO. It turned out so beautiful and it used up so many blocks. Well done. ;^)

Beautiful! And I love how the hour glass blocks calm down the other blocks. I made the FW and I prefer your setting. Great job!!

Oh WOW, Cathy!! Congratulations! I started making Farmer's Wife blocks around the same time you did and my blocks are still hiding shamefully in a project bin, covered with dust. I think I got frustrated with myself for going all over the place with fabric for each block instead of sticking to a unified theme or palette and didn't think the blocks would ever look good together in a quilt. So I am actually very inspired and encouraged to see how well your alternate hourglass blocks unify your sampler quilt. It's a gorgeous finish, and you might just have convinced me to dig out that box and reevaluate whether there is hope for my own Farmer's Wife after all these years!
