Log Cabin Lunacy

A new Log Cabin top!
60 x 80

(I took the photos a few days ago because I knew snow was in the forecast. Sure enough yesterday about 1.5 inches of snow fell and is still on the ground today.)

In January I used some civil war reproduction scraps and sewed along with Julie (JulieKQuilts) to make ten inch (finished) blocks

I used up all of my neutral scraps but still have a lot of mostly brown scraps left.

This year I want to try to get anything new that I start to at least flimsy stage before year end. That does exclude Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) projects since those quilts usually span a year or two at the minimum.

Speaking of goals...
My OMG (One Monthly Goal) was to assemble at least one top from the "Some Assembly Required" box of complete block sets. This is top #2.   Top #1 was a Double X/Snowball.  Only 7 block sets left in the "Some Assembly Required" box now!

A Variety of Green Postage Stamps

Plus Postage
These are 10 inch (finished) blocks. Now I only need to make 5 more to reach my goal of 48 blocks.

Double Irish Chain
These are 9 inch (finished) blocks. I'm using light browns for the background and dark brown and Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month for the chain.

Postage Stamp Pandemic blocks that finish at 8 inches.

A New Top Inspired By A Vintage Quilt

I started making the little four inch (finished) Double X and Snowball blocks back in February 2019.  I made it one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) projects and just used scraps and a Kona green mint piece of yardage I had on hand that I had bought long ago to finish a project but it was the wrong color of green for that project. So, I decided to use the mint green and make blocks each month until I ran out of the mint green yardage. I had to piece a couple of Snowballs to end up with enough blocks for a layout 48 x 64 which is a nice size for a lap quilt.

I wasn't really sure I was going to like that mint green for the background but that's really all I had to use except for muslin or Kona Snow. I didn't want a neutral background and I'm really trying to make do so mint green it was. I really like it now as the background for the blocks. I was afraid it would not look good with all the different colors of scraps but thank goodness it does.

I think the blocks were a little fiddly but worth it.

My March OMG (One Monthly Goal) was to assemble at least one top from the "Some Assembly Required Box" of complete block sets. This is top #1. There may be more.

Wednesday Wandering

Crocus outside the back door. They are sprinkled throughout the lawn here and there. I planted them in one patch about 20 years ago but the squirrels evidently thought they looked a lot better scattered here and there. And I think I agree.

Down in the woods...

...loud cackling...a grackle (or starling?) murmuration...hundreds (maybe thousands?) of birds first gather together in the trees then they all of a sudden dive down to the ground of the surrounding fields in search of seeds and insects...a sea of black...

...then they gather once again in the trees and with a very loud swooping noise they are gone...a black cloud moving on to the next spot. It's mesmerizing.

A lot of the fields are still snow and ice covered even though it has been in the 60s the last couple of days.

I took advantage of the warm weather to work outside in short sleeves and hubby snuck and took a pic and emailed it to me. (Weirdo!)

It doesn't look like it but I spent some time cleaning up the asparagus patch. There are three rows of asparagus. In the spring I cut back the old stalks and weed around them. I'm basically an organic gardener so I use whatever  I can to keep weeds down. Here I put down old plastic water softener salt bags in the paths. Then I sometimes throw old dried weeds on top. Those bags in the path have been there for at least 10 years or so. April is usually when the first asparagus shoots appear. I wanted to get out and clean up the path because I never know when if the April showers will keep me out of the gardens.

I also cleaned up the patch where I will plant lettuce, spinach, mustard greens and radishes. I usually just broadcast a bunch of seeds and cover lightly and keep watered. I hope to plant those seeds near the end of March so the April showers will keep the patch watered.

I see a lot of green in the strawberry patch. I hope the deer don't notice.

This is the entire strawberry patch. I don't have to mulch it. Mother Nature does. We have a lot of trees around and just the right amount of leaves seem to magically fall and cover the patch in the Autumn.

I spy red shoots of rhubarb.

A small Black Walnut tree recently fell near the corner of the veggie garden and took out the end post of the grape arbor.

We seem to be constantly cleaning up fallen trees. I try to chop up the smaller limbs to use on garden paths or mulch. I'm running out of places for brush piles. That's an old chicken coop that's rotting away. And there's two old swing sets sans swings there that I was going to string and use for flower trellises.

In the flower garden I see some Surprise Lilies sprouting up.

In my new native wildflower area I'm excited to see some sprouts...

...of Camassia (aka camas, quamash, Indian Hyacinth, Camash, Wild Hyacinth) which is the only thing planted there so far. How exciting!

A Finish

It's a finish!
67.5 x 82.5

It seems like this year I have been quilting most of the flimsies I made in 2019. Someday maybe I will get caught up.

I used two different blocks with batiks that were swapped long ago - maybe as far back as 2010 or earlier.

One of the blocks is a batik Happy Block with 4 inch centers and 2.5 inch sides that finishes at 7.5 inches.

The other block is a trimmed down Framed Four Patch with 4.5 center and 2.5 inch sides in black trimmed down to an 8 inch unfinished block so I could pair them up with the smaller Happy Blocks.

It's quilted with some horizontal and vertical lines and even has some LOVE quilted in.

The back.

Now it is ready for giving or gifting. Or it might go into a "hope chest pile". I just realized my granddaughters will turn 17 this year and will soon be going off to college and/or setting up their own households. It has been my plan to have a pile of things like quilts, potholders, crocheted dishcloths, embroidered dish towels, pillowcases, etc. for them to choose from when the need arises.

What's In The Hoop?

 What's in the hoop?
Tulipa Errata

The top was finished in August 2019 and has finally found it's way to the top of the hand quilting queue for some big stitching with a variety of pink and red threads. This was made mostly from '30s reproduction scraps and it is called Tulipa Errata because it was another one of those patterns that was full of errors as far as cutting those background triangles for the tulip applique. I had to improvise a little in order to assemble the top because of those errors.  I guess it is good to put on the old thinking cap once in awhile.

Gosh, there's sure a lot of pink in this one!

Dove In The Window

Green is the RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) color of the month so I dug into some green scraps and made a few Dove in the Window blocks.
