Kaleidoscopes !!!

Kaleidoscopes

Made from lots of scraps and crumbs.

Each 12 inch block is made up of wedges (cut with a kaleidoscope ruler) made up of six 1.5 inch strips...

...and the corners and borders are made of crumbs.  For the binding I used binding leftover from other projects. 

I ended up quilting each kaleidoscope block with some wobbly circles...they weren't really supposed to be wobbly at first...but my hands are sometimes shaky and my eyes sometimes don't see well so I said the heck with it and went where the quilting, shaky hands and bad eyesight took me.  After all, this was made from SCRAPS. 

Where the corners of the blocks meet and in the crumby border I quilted some squares, rectangles and wobbly squares and rectangles.

The quilt is a result of  last years Rainbow Scrap Challenge. 

Each month last year I made a block in the RSC color of the month, color of the month plus its complement and color of the month plus the previous month.   That way I figured a color-challenged person like me couldn't go wrong. 

From the start I had always intended to add a crumb border since I used crumbs for the kaleidoscope corners but I wavered back and forth on it several times.  I thought it might look like little kaleidoscope pieces before they form a design...and I guess they do. 

This was truly a Rainbow Scrap Challenge. 

It's not perfect but its all mine and it makes me smile.  

(It made my husband smile too...or was that a laugh?)

Anyway...I'll give it two smiles.

Kaleidoscope

It's ALMOST a top. 

I need to add a colorful crumb border. I hope it will look like those little kaleidoscope pieces before they form designs. 

I used crumbs in the corners of each 12 inch kaleidoscope block so that's why I'm going to add the border...plus it will get rid of some of those itty bitty scraps. 

This is one of the projects I worked on for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Each month I made a block out of the color of the month, the color of the month plus the previous month and the color of the month plus its color complement.

I Think I Have Enough Blocks Now

I now have 43 - 12 inch Kaleidoscope Blocks.  I only need 42. That rainbow one was an after thought  and it kind of sticks out so I might not use it. But, you never know. 

I've been making these out of scraps as one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2014 projects.  Each month I've made a block out of the color of the month, color of the month plus it's complement and color of month plus previous month.  This month I had to free form it and let my scraps dictate.  I've used crumbs for the corners and want to use crumbs for a border.  I'm hoping when all is said and done the crumbs will kind of look like those little kaleidoscope pieces before they form a beautiful design.

A Time to Finish

January through November of this year I've been making Kaleidoscope blocks as one of my projects for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.    Each month I made a block in the color of the month, a block in the color of the month plus the previous month and a block of the color of the month plus its complement. 

And I've been using crumbs for the corners. 

I now have 36 - 12 inch kaleidoscope blocks. 

December is the month to finish up some of our RSC projects. 

I want 42 blocks for a 6 x 7 layout.  So, I need 6 more blocks.  I've looked through my bigger scraps for some fabric combinations for those six extras. 

Here's 2  blocks I made this morning to add to the pile. Two down...four to go. 

And I'm THINKING I will add a 4 inch crumby border.  Not sure I like the straight lines so I'm going to hunt around my sewing room for that bag of wonky and waste HSTs.  I think the triangle crumbs will look more like those little kaleidoscope pieces look before they form a design.

Question: How Many Little Monkeys Will be Laying on the Bed?

Answer: 288 when I finish this quilt. 

I made Little (5 inch finished) Monkey Wrench blocks from scraps each month this year from my 2.5 inch scraps and 1.5 inch scraps as one of my projects for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  For the 2.5 inch corner HSTs I used scraps in the color of the month plus neutral scraps. For the centers I used contrasting squares from my 1.5 inch postage stamp collection and 1.5 inch scrap bin.  I've started assembling them on point without sashing and have diagonal rows 1-6 assembled on each end.  No design wall here so it's grab and sew. 

Hopefully my Little Monkeys won't ever be jumping on the bed.

Still Blue

The color of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is still light blue.  

I've used some of my scraps in four 8 inch string blocks...

...a  16 inch Chevron block...

...four 8 inch kaleidoscope blocks...

...and an HST block.

Singing the Blues

Light blue is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month. 

It is year end and I still have a lot of 2.5 and 1.5 inch scraps so I decided just to turn them into as many different 4 inch blocks as I could and continue this into next year.  I may or may not combine all blocks into one quilt or several.  Who knows where it will lead. 

Four inch four patches, HSTs, pinwheels, snowballs...

...4 inch bowties...

... and 4 inch Happy Blocks.

I've been making 6 inch Twinklers all year and I think these will continue into next year. 

 I think I have 52 of them but will probably make a full sized quilt so need about that many more. 

1.5 inch Scraps

I made 2 more 9 inch Vintage Butterfly blocks (aka Beggar Blocks).  I need to see if I have enough now for a full sized quilt. 

And I've added a few more 3 inch spool blocks to my collection. 

2.5 Inch Scraps

I've made a couple of 8 inch Depression Blocks from my 2.5 inch scraps. I have made these throughout the year if I had any HSTs left over from making my Little Monkey blocks. Now that I have enough Little Monkeys I will specifically make 2.5 inch HSTs from my scraps for use in these Depression blocks.  

(Side note: I really love the Depression block and have made it in several other sizes.  It's a great scrap buster besides). 

And these are some other 8 inch blocks that use 2.5 inch scraps.  I saw it on line somewhere but didn't take note of the name of it.   Anyway...more of these blocks will be made next year to use up my 2.5 inch scraps.

Blue - Using it and Feeling It

Light blue is the color of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. 

I've been making 3 - 12 inch kaleidoscope blocks each month - one in the color of the month one in the color of month plus it's complement and one in color of month plus previous month.    I want to have 42 blocks before I assemble the quilt so made an extra all blue one this month. 

I've been making the corners of the blocks out of crumbs. So in addition to using up scraps for the kaleidoscope I use up LOTS of crumbs in the corners. 

I was to also make a border out of crumbs for my kaleidoscope quilt but in mixed up crumbs. I think that will look like little kaleidoscope pieces.   I've had crumb strips that are left over each month  (at top in photo) after making the kaleidoscopes that will be used in the border.  They measure about 4.5 inches.  In addition I've had some strips left over each month from the kaleidoscopes that I've been cutting into 6.5 inch squares to use in something else (yet to be determined) later. 

Since I've been using a lot of crumbs and smaller pieces in projects this year I've started using my bigger scraps in some rainbow projects that will continue into next year like this Dresden.   I've used 4.5 inch pieces in this and will use a gray background, a polka dot center in the color of the month surrounded by gray rick rack.   With this I practice my applique skills (which are about nil).

Wonky Blues

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month is light blue. 

I used my string scraps to make four 9 inch log wonky log cabins which I then combined to make one 18 inch block. 

I think I need two more 18 inch blocks and I'll be able to assemble a top.

Sue and Little Monkeys

I've been making Sunbonnet Sue blocks in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colors of the month for the past year.   Pattern is from Q is for Quilter.  Each block is made from 1.5 inch squares. 

With the light blue block for November I now have 12 blocks and am ready to put together the top. 

I have added a WOW scrappy border around each block and then a scrappy postage stamp border in the color Sunbonnet Sue in the block. Each block then measures 13x14.

I'm not sure then if I will add another white postage stamp border between blocks or not. 

I have a while to decide. I need to go through my scraps to cut postage stamps for the borders. 

I think I will hand quilt plus add some embroidery to the sunbonnets and dresses. 

When finished I think this will go into the hope chest for the first great granddaughter.  It may be in the hope chest awhile. My oldest granddaughter just turned 10 yesterday. 

I've also been working on a Little Monkey Wrench quilt. I've been using the RSC color of the month scraps to make HSTs for each block that measures 5 inches.  I needed 15 more blocks for a total of 288 blocks in order to start putting this top together.  I won't be using any sashings.  And it will be set on point.  Should be big and fun.

Final Chapter of Tales from the Dark Side

This is the last weekend for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month - Brown, Black, Gray. 

This week I've made 64 lozenges from my 2.5 scraps...

...a HST block (plus extra HSTs) from my gray 4.5 inch scraps...

...spools from my 1.5 inch scraps...

...and finally, I've added another 49 patch in cream/browns made from 1.5 inch scraps. 

I didn't even get to any string projects this month but I think I will have a use for them later on this year.

Black, Brown, Gray Scraps

We are supposed to use up our black, brown and gray scraps this month as part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. 

Last month the color was orange and I started on an RSC project for next year- Dresdens.  I decided I would use any gray background but was undecided about the centers.  I decided any dotty fabric will do surrounded by gray medium sized rick rack. I love rick rack. 

I made 3 more vintage butterfly blocks (Beggar Blocks) and a few spares for the border.  I think I will have to continue this project into next years RSC. These are 9 inch blocks and I want enough for a full/queen sized quilt similar to the one I saw at Nostalgic Cafe. 

 

I also made a few 6 inch Twinkler blocks.

The Grandkids are here so we will make Halloween cookies, play some card or board games and probably make another cooperative effort to try to solve a Nancy Drew mystery (computer game).  

  

To Sash or Not to Sash- That is the Question.

I've been making these Little Monkey Wrench blocks for a couple of years now. 

I have a big pile of them - well over 200. 

I want to start sewing them together. 

My first inclination is NO sashing...

...but then again...I don't know...I kind of like Bonnie Hunter's sashed Little Monkeys. 

What would you do? 

Black/brown/gray are the "colors" of the month for the RSC. 

I've completed 3 kaleidoscope blocks but not sure if I'll use that b/w one. Yikes...that's hard on the eyes. 

Anyway, each month I've been making 12 inch kaleidoscope blocks - one of color of the month, another with color of the month and previous month and one of color of month and its complement.  This month it all went awry.   

Anyway, here's three blocks and the leftovers. 

And I had a few 2.5 HSTs left over after making those Little Monkeys so I made an 8 inch Depression Block, a few pinwheels and a 6 patch HST block.

Tales from the Dark Side

Brown, black and gray are the "colors" of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. 

I have lots of scraps of each of those "colors" so I'm not sure I'll get all those scraps used up this month. 

I started with brown from the 1.5 inch scrap bin and made some 3 inch spool blocks. 

And I made some 3 inch 9 patches for an upcoming swap.  I'm using the darker little 9 patches in one of my Jack's Chain quilts.
