In-Betweens

I did a little stash busting this month and made 5 tops from my rose prints. In between sewing rows and columns together for those "Roses in December" flimsies I made some blue and white  HSTs from a baggie of bonus triangles someone gave to me in March. I then sewed them together into 62 strips of five to add to my growing collection of HST strips that will at some future date be made into...

...my version of this vintage quilt.

I also made 396  - 2.5 inch (unfinished) HSTs with some '30s reproduction scraps and Kona Snow so now I am ready to make...

...11 more Carpenter Star blocks. Well, first I have to cut a few Kona Snow and '30s repro squares from scraps then I'll be ready to make those Carpenter Stars.

Roses in December: Geese in the Roses

It's a finish!
Geese in the Roses
60 x 69

I used lots of rose print scraps in this one.

I quilted it on my DSM with a pink variegated thread. I wanted to try a rose motif but figured it would not be worth the trouble of trying something new on these busy fabrics. Instead I went with my three petaled flower for the quilting.

This is the backing.

With this one I can check another UFO off the list.

Roses in December: Rosa Rugosa Blues

Rosa Rugosa Blues
48 x 60
It's another new top!

I've been working with my collection of rose prints this month. I noticed I had several small pieces of blue rose prints and neutrals so decided to make some 18 patches. I didn't have quite enough rose print scraps to use so threw in some scraps of butterfly prints. (Butterflies - another one of my "collections").

I made 12 inch (finished) blocks (2.5 x 4.5 inch pieces) and alternated the orientation of every other block.

This is quilt top #5 of my "Roses in December"  stash busting series.

"God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December" - J.M. Barrie, author.
And when my memory fails I guess I'll have quilts so that I might have roses in December.

Roses in December

"God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December" - Sir James Matthew Barrie (author of Peter Pan)

Roses in December
A new quilt top.
86 x 103

I originally had some rusts, oranges, golds, browns and reds picked out for this pattern but didn't have enough of any of those fabrics to make this pattern so I set the pattern aside to try with other fabrics later. So later arrived --why not try it with roses.

It is one of those patterns that is designed to be used with a fabric collection.  It is easy to make but  I had a difficult time envisioning how any of my rose print fabrics would look together in this one since the pattern gives instructions for yardage and cutting with a fabric order number and picture of the fabric.  When I finally decided on which fabrics to use once again I didn't have enough of most of them.

I finally narrowed down fabrics in a sort of red/pink, white and blue color scheme and the fabrics ended up where they are in this top according to how much I had of each fabric.  This top looks like it is just made of long strips of fabric but actually it is made of blocks set on point.

This is top #4 of my "Roses in December" stash busting series.

Roses in December: Waffle Cone Roses

A new top!
Waffle Cone Roses
51 x 63

Remember back on December 1 I said I had a bin of dark scraps and I removed the brown and orange ones for a future quilt?   This is that future quilt. I used a lot of those  scraps in the blocks that are strip pieced.  I thought this pattern would be a good one to use with some large brown rose prints.

I had a few other odds and ends in browns to go with the big prints.

This was a quick make and I like how it turned out.

I have a lot of brown scraps left...

...and a couple more small pieces of big brown rose prints so I will probably piece a backing for this one.

I'm working with my collection of rose prints this month. This is rosy quilt top #3.

Roses in December: Roses in the Cabin

I have a new top!
Roses in the Cabin
64 x 80

I chose this month to work with my collection of rose print fabrics.  Some people collect fabrics by certain designers but I collect them by themes. I love roses so over the years I have collected a bin of rose print fabrics and although I have made several quilts with them I can make several more.

This year lots a few loved ones have passed away, one is in hospice and several others are battling cancer and other life altering illnesses. I am so thankful I am healthy at this point in my life but I realize we are not promised tomorrow. I don't want to have any future regrets that I collected rose fabrics but didn't get around to using them.   So this month I've been using them - Roses in December! I can't stop to smell these bouquets but I can stop and sew them.

This is quilt top #2 for this month's Parade of Roses. The first top was Mystica.

I also started this with a bin of dark colored scraps and declared it my OMG (One Monthly Goal) for December.

I made 16 inch log cabin blocks. Some have 4.5 inch centers and some have 6.5 inch centers cut from scraps. If the center was 4.5 inch I added a frame of 1.5 inch scraps to bring it up to 6.5 inches.

Then the next rounds were 2 inch, 2.5 inch and 2 inch strips.  Some of the strips were pieced together with different fabrics.

Now on to the next!

What's In The Hoop?

What's in the hoop?
Jack's Chain

I'm big stitch hand quilting with off white perle #12.

It's a big 82 x 87 so this will probably take me into the new year.

I worked on it off and on over the years until it became a flimsy in March of this year.

I have a big pile of tops that I want to hand quilt. I decided to work on this one after I finished the Majestic Mountains in my previous post  because I had been working with Nine Patches in November so it only seemed right to pick this one for hand quilting.

I'm really enjoying my time quilting this. Most of those little nine patches came from swaps over the years. Now I can enjoy the catalog of fabrics while I stitch.
