It's a top!

This month the theme in my sewing room is "brown stuff". I'm trying to move forward UFOS and scraps that fit the theme.  This is a UFO that dates back to a swap that took place in 2015. 

I made 15 blocks in January 2015 and swapped 12 of the best in February 2015.

For the blocks we were to use civil war reproduction fabrics and for the sides - golden tan and white. 

In January 2021 when I was looking at UFOs that needed civil war reproduction fabrics I made 15 more blocks and put the block set in my SAR (Some Asembly Required box). 

So...one step at a time over time. Now this will go into the TBQ (To Be Quilted) pile. 

In Memory Of

Victoria Carroll-Parkhill

she was the block swap hostess and self-proclaimed civil war fabric snob. 

She used to blog at Park Hill Farm.  Her husband passed away in 2020 and after that she did not do much blogging and no longer had much of an online presence. I was thinking of her when I made this post and went to her blog again but there has been no activity for years. I went searching for an obituary but did not find one but I did find a probate notice dated May 2023.  

May she rest in peace.

 

One Thing Leads To Another

For several years I've sewn along with Julie and other Log Cabin Loonies to make a log cabin quilt. I decided to join in again this year and thought I would use a box of civil war reproduction scraps. 

But before I cut up all those scraps I decided to look at my UFO list to see if I had any UFOs that could benefit from those scraps. I found a box with some old Sunny Lanes swapped blocks.  The swap took place back in February 2015. 

In the box I had 15 blocks that finish at 12 inches.  I also had a little baggie of four patch blocks that I think were from a different swap. My first thought was that I would make five more blocks and with a

4  x  5 layout that would make a quilt 48 x 60 which is kind of a weird size. Most of the quilts I donate or gift for adults are closer to 60 x 80.  So...even though I didn't really feel like making 15 more blocks for a 5 x 6 layout and a quilt 60 x 72 I decided I would. 

So on breaks from quilting or top assembly I cut enough of those cw repro scraps to make 15 more Sunny Lane blocks.  

And after I had those parts cut and sewn I still had lots of scraps left so  I started cutting up those cw repro scraps to make my log cabin blocks. 

And then I sewed two rounds of logs on to my 48 log cabin centers. 

I still need to add three more rounds in order to end up with a 10 inch finished block. 

And now I have made 15 more Sunny Lane blocks, emptied a box and moved another UFO forward. 

This complete block set will now go into the big "some assembly required" box with other block sets and will be made into a top later.

I hope I win this time. Wouldn't these look nice with some turquoise, raspberry or lime green blocks? 

Six inch Pentland Cracker blocks. I'm getting ready for a swap with Block Swappers Yahoo Group.  And, I'm making more each month from scraps as one of my blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. 

3 inch mini bow ties for a swap with some ladies with the Quilting Bee Yahoo Group.  I'm also going to make more of these each month from scraps.

Digging into the Civil War Reproductions

I have a big bin of civil war reproduction fabrics (well, I threw it in there if I thought it  was a cw fabric) that I need to reduce before I die (which I hope is not any time soon because I have lots of other bins to reduce too). 

While looking around for a pattern I liked I somehow happened upon a picture of a  Blind Man's Fancy quilt. I loved it.  Then I did a search and found more pictures that I loved and then I found  a pattern for a 15 inch block.   So I made a couple of blocks just to see if I would still like it.   And I do. 

And then, since I was in civil war fabric mode I made a few more swapped  6 inch nine patches into 10 inch Sister's Choice blocks. 

And then besides the bins of fabric there's the scraps from previous projects that need to be used up.  This bag is all 2.5 inch scraps. I've kept them separate because I'll probably make nine patches with them.  I don't mix and match my civil war fabrics with other scraps because civil war fabrics are pretty snobby and frown upon those novelty fabrics I seem to use quite frequently. 

This drawer has scraps of sizes other than 2.5.   I think I'll cut the 2 inch, 4 and 6 inch scraps into 2 inch squares.   I don't want to waste any 1/2 inch pieces of fabric cutting 2 inch squares so that's why I'll pick out even numbered scraps.  Yes, I'm cheap  frugal. 

Sunny Lanes

At the beginning of the year there will be a swap on Block Swappers Yahoo Group of 12 inch Sunny Lane blocks.  (Hey, if you have civil war fabrics and/or scraps it's not too late to join in.) At first I didn't really like the block by itself but  when the blocks are sewn together the white (Kona Snow) lanes form a pattern in the background that I kind of like.   Plus I can use up some scraps making my blocks.   For the swapped blocks I'll strip piece.
