A Race To The Finish!

This is one of five child sized row quilts I made following prompts for the Stay At Home Round Robin (SAHRR) 2025. For this one I used novelty fabric bits and pieces with a car theme.

In the center is a piece of fabric with race cars that was too nice to cut up.

I had some 6.5 inch squares with tires and cars from some old, old, old swaps to use as centers for some 12 inch blocks. Other fabrics include road signs and license plates.

I quilted it on my sewing machine with horizontal lines through some rows and with swirls through others. And I quilted squiggles around the "pennants" in the top and bottom rows. 

The backing and binding are the same striped fabric.

This orphan block quilt is a row quilt. For this one I picked out orphan blocks with some black in them. 

Then I arranged them in rows by size.

It has been getting cold. I have been doing a little winter sowing of seeds that need cold stratification. Later in the year I will winter sow in pots and milk jugs set outside on the deck. Spring seeds is the only way I can afford all of the flowers I want in my gardens.

SAHRR: The Last Two Of Five

It was so windy outside this morning so I didn't think I would be able to take photos today of the last two Stay At Home Round Robin quilts I finished up yesterday.  I found a little break in the winds when I went out to feed the barn cats so grabbed the camera before the winds start up again. 

 I  am participating in the 2025 Stay At Home Round Robin (SAHRR).

As I mentioned in a previous post...

I am going to use the weekly prompts to make 5 kiddo sized row quilts. 

The prompt this week for round 6 is "kite units". 

This one started out with race cars as the center. 

I decided that the race cars needed some strings of pennants on bottom...

...and top. They look like "kite units" to me! 

This one started out with a piece of border print with scottie dogs and flowers as the center. 

I added 9 inch Kite Blocks (aka Periwinkle or Hummingbird blocks) to the bottom. 

And now I have five comfort quilt tops for kids. 

The other three tops got too long to make it to round 6.

Today is my grandson's 16th birthday. I witnessed his birth. What a joyous day! Time flies. 

 

SAHRR:Three Down and Two To Go

Yippee! It finally warmed up into the double digits with wind chill also in double digits so I ventured outside to the clothesline for some photos.

As I mentioned in a previous post...

I am going to use the weekly prompts to make 5 kiddo sized row quilts. 

The prompt this week for round 5 is "half log cabins".

Last week one of my five row quilts was long enough after round 4. 

This week I added half log cabins to 2 quilts and now they are long enough and out of the game. 

The last prompt for round 6 comes out tomorrow and hopefully after that you will see rounds 5 and 6 on my remaining 2 of the 5 quilts that are still in the game. 

Under Construction

I had just enough of a print with construction vehicles digging around in dirt that I cut into 4.5 inch squares. Then I dug around in my brown scraps for anything that looked like it might pass as dirt and cut 2.5 inch rectangles - fourteen 2.5 x 4.5 rectangles and fourteen 2.5 x 6.5 rectangles.  Then I made fourteen half log cabin blocks.  Seven blocks went into a row for the top and...

...seven of them went into a row on the bottom. 

Now I have a top 42 x 60 so I'm stopping here with this one. 

Elephants on Parade

I had a little shoe box with small scraps of black and white fabrics. From that I pulled some 2.5 inch pieces to cut 20 -- 2.5 inch squares for my starter square of the half log cabins.  I cut 1.5 inch strips from a couple of different white scraps for my second round of the log cabins. And then I pulled more scraps from my shoe box of black and whites to cut 1.5 inch rectangles for the final round of the 4 inch finished half log cabins.   As an added bonus I emptied the shoe box. I sorted all remaining b/w scraps by width and put them into my boxes of scraps sorted by width. 

Then I added a row of half log cabin blocks the top and...

...and to the bottom. 

That also makes this a 42 x 60 inch top and it won't need anything else added.

Now that it has warmed up into double digits I'm feeling ready for some more winter sowing! 

I was kind of bummed out yesterday when I looked out my kitchen window at the area where I sowed my native wildflower seeds a few months ago and saw three huge deer running through. They do so much damage!

SAHRR Round Four on Five Row Quilts

As I mentioned in a previous post...

I am going to use the weekly prompts to make 5 kiddo sized row quilts. 

The prompt this week -Add "Slice and Insert" blocks.

To this quilt I added 4 inch squares pulled out of my 30s reproduction scraps.  I sliced the squares into 2.5 and 1.5 pieces and inserted a 1 inch x 4 inch strip between the two pieces. I know that a 1 inch strip inserted into any size block will keep the block at the original size. In this case that is a 4 inch square. 

I added a row to the top...

...and to the bottom and now this quilt measures 40 x 57 inches so I think I'm finished with this quillt since I was aiming for close to 40 x 60 inches. 

I kind of cheated on this one. Instead of "slice and insert" I added a "slice and shuffle" block - Wonky Windmills. 

Each six inch (finished) Wonky Windmills is made with 4 rectangles 3.5 x 4 inches - 2 each of 2 different fabrics.  Then stack two rectangles on top of each other, slice from the 4 inch side to the other 4 inch side then move the top piece on the right side of the pile to the bottom. Sew the two sides together to yield two units of the 4 needed for the Wonky Windmill. 

I used a chunk of road sign fabric to make the Windmills. 

The Elephants got a row of six inch finished Wonky Crosses on top. 

I used the same scraps I used in the Friendship Stars in the bottom row.  I cut 6.5 inch squares and made horizontal and vertical slices and inserted 1 inch strips. 

The Construction Zone quilt got some "Do Not Enter" signs added. 

At first I made 5 blocks all in yellow and red - 8.5 inch squares sliced on the diagonals with 1 inch red strips inserted.  But all of that yellow kind of overwhelmed the quilt. 

Then, in with the bits and pieces I collected to add to this quilt, I found two 9 inch squares that had the words "construction and work" plus some vehicles on it. I cut the two squares down to 8.5 inch squares and did a slice and insert on them.  

You may or may not remember that last week I added some 10.5 inch Friendship Stars to this quilt and then I declared it finished at 56 inches.  Well...now I'm declaring it unfinished. I took off the Friendship Stars. I didn't like the addition of those Stars to the top and bottom of the quilt. They just seemed too big and dark to match the rest of the quilt.  I will use those Friendship Stars in another quilt. 

So I kind of took this week's prompt and added a top and bottom border. Someone had given me four 6 inch wide strips of that red polka dot fabric that I used on each side of that center border. I took one of those strips and cut it into two 3 inch strips. Then I cut (sliced) each 3 inch strip into two 1.5 inch strips and inserted a 1.5 inch strip in between.  I added those strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. 

Then I made five 8 inch finished Sawtooth Stars to replace the Frienship Stars I ripped off the quilt. 

I made the Stars out of Scottie Dog and green plaid fabrics to sort of echo that center border.  Right now I'm not going to add my Star row. I can add 8 inches to the top and bottom of the quilt and reach my desired size.  I'm going to wait and see what prompts 5 and 6 are and see if I can make other 8 inch blocks out of Scottie Dogs and plaid to mix in with the Stars for my top and bottom rows. 

I'm ready for round 5 on Monday!

Finished a book! - The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. While mudlarking a woman finds a small bottle with a bear inscribed on it. She researches the bottle and learns it came from a very old 1790s apothecary shop that dispensed poisons to women who wanted to do away with the men who wronged them. 

 

SAHRR Round Three On Five Row Quilts

As I mentioned in a previous post...

I am going to use the weekly prompts to make 5 kiddo sized row quilts. 

The prompt this week -Add Star(s)

Since the center border print had dogs and flowers I wanted to add in some dogs since I already have added lots of flowers.  Someone had given me a four inch width print with dogs that I used as the center for some Friendship Stars.   A few of these quilts are 42.5 inches in width and a few are 40.5 inches in width. I thought this one was 42.5 inches and so made rows for top and bottom of the quilt with four 10.5 inch blocks. BUT when I went to add the rows to the quilt I realized my mistake, darn it! This quilt is 40.5 inches in width. 

So the rows now only have three blocks plus some rectangles on the ends to add width. And, yes, I meant to have the Friendship Stars twirling different directions. I think the rows probably would have looked better with the added rectangles added like sashing between the Stars but I was feeling too lazy to rip apart all the Stars in both rows. 

So now this quilt is 56 inches long so I think I'm finished with this top. 

I have some other bits and pieces of dog prints set aside with the two extra Frienship Star blocks. Now I think I'll make a few more Friendship Star blocks for another kiddo comfort quilt. 

And I have these pieces I think I can use to piece a backing for my row quilt. 

The Elephants quilt is one that is 42.5 inches wide. 

It got a row of six inch finished Friendship Stars.

Finished another book! -The Briar Club by Kate Quinn. Life in the 50s of some folks who live in a boarding house. Some of the characters are based on real people. I really enjoyed the book - it was one I didn't want to put down.  I've enjoyed others by Kate Quinn - The Rose Code, The Alice Network and The Huntress.
