Inspired by a 19th century crib quilt I saw at Q is for Quilter. 

Usually when I make my version of an antique quilt I hand quilt it.  For this one I used ecru perle #12.  I just love how you can feel the fabric get softer and softer as I quilt. 

I used mostly pink and brown civil war reproduction prints and used up most of my pinks. Not all of the fabrics were reproduction but ones that I thought would look okay together with the reproductions.. 

My basket is different from the one in the antique quilt. I like the original basket but it has a bias handle and I'm not too keen on making bias to match each little basket. 

There's one light pink fabric I should probably not have used because it doesn't blend in and and stands out like a sore thumb but it has baskets on it so I used it. My quilt; my weird rules!  

The binding is a brown and red print. 

And the backing is a pinkish brown. 

I think with all this work it will now go into the hope chest for my first great grandchild. I guess maybe I should label it with those instructions. 

And sew it goes...

It's just a top for now. 

If I remember correctly it's about 70 x 90. 

I think I like basket quilts as much as I like butterfly quilts as much as I like star quilts as much as I like...

I THINK it was 2014 when I participated in two different baskets swaps using 30s reproduction fabrics.  Of course one set of baskets finished at 7 inches and the other at eight inches so I had to border the 7 inchers with 1 inch strips in order to use them together.  (Well,  I suppose I could have done some other things to use them together so "had to" is probably not the correct choice of words). 

Then I just sewed them all together randomly because you know I'm too lazy and not limber enough to get down on the floor to lay and relay them all out again and again. And you know how I don't like to dither or I would never get anything accomplished.  And you know I never hang the quilt up after it's finished but wrap it around someone or put it on a bed so what's the diff? 

Anyway, it never ceases to amaze me what happens with sewing randomly. 

If I had this layout on the floor and had seen those two yellow baskets in the same "row" across or those two red with white leaves baskets in the same "row" across  I would probably still be fiddling about on the floor.

And into the hand quilting pile it goes.

Once in Awhile I Finish Something

I finished my Stash Baskets quilt.

It was difficult last night to get a good photo. No matter what I tried the lighting just wasn't right. 

It was all hand quilted - big stitches on the baskets and regular hand quilting in the ditch between blocks. 

I used Color Catchers when I washed it because I had used so many red fabrics.

There was no bleeding.

I bought this fabric long ago thinking it would make a nice quilt back. 

It does.  All my uneven hand quilting blends right in. 

Doing any hand quilting today?

Big Stitching Baskets

I'm big stitching my basket quilt in navy perle #8 with a #4 (I think) embroidery needle. 

I finished the pillowcases I was working on to go with the Double Wedding Ring quilt for my granddaughter's hope chest. 

First of all, I didn't notice when I cut the band for embroidery that is was a lighter yellow Kona than what I had bought for the body of the pillowcase. Oh, well, I went ahead with my plan and finished assembly in two tones. 

Second of all, the transfers I used had a vine beneath HIS and nothing beneath HERS. HERS is in bigger lettering and vine didn't fit in same space.   I fixed that.  I added a crocheted edging to HERS.  I just happened to have some purple crochet thread on hand.  Might as well use it up.
