Tales From The Scrap Yard: #10

Back on March 24 I received several bags of scraps and I decided to document  with "Tales From The Scrap Yard" how many donation quilts I could make from those scraps. I've been trying to make the quilts all different.  I sorted the scraps into different bins and boxes and this is the second quilt to come out of the brown scraps. I added in some of my own scraps (blue,white, red plaids and green and red stripe) to pick up the colors of some of the cars and trucks in the square that makes up the star. 

This is quilt top #10 and when finished will probably be donated to Quilts Beyond Borders. 

This is the last quilt to come from the bags of scraps. The remaining scraps will get mixed with mine. Most of those scraps will go into slab, crumb and string quilts. 

This was a fun exercise in scrap usage.

This is a ten inch block. I used the Double Wrench pattern at Quilter's Cache.

I will probably be able to make one more small brown quilt from the remaining scraps.

Tales From The Scrap Yard: Some Really Cool Bear Paws

Back on March 24 I received several bags of scraps and I decided to document  with "Tales From The Scrap Yard" how many donation quilts I could make from those scraps. I've been trying to make the quilts all different.  I sorted the scraps into different bins and boxes and this is the first and probably only quilt I'll be able to make from the cool scraps although there are some cool scraps left that will be made into a few other blocks to be shared in quilts in a rainbow of different colors.  The neutral backgrounds came from my scraps. 

This is quilt top #8 made from those March 24 scraps. When finished it will probably be donated to

 Quilts Beyond Borders.

I've been trying to make the quilts all different.  I sorted the scraps into different bins and boxes and this is the second one to come from a 14 quart bin of what I considered warm colors.  I only had to add in a few scraps of my own.

This is quilt top #7 made from those March 24 scraps. When finished it will probably be donated to Quilts Beyond Borders.

This is quilt top #6 made mostly from scraps that came to the Scrap Yard back on March 24.

This top consists of lots of 3.5 inch (finished) HSTs made with warm colored scraps.

I used the Easy Angle ruler to cut the HSTs from 4 inch width scraps. I sewed together 9 HSTs into a block of the same configuration (10.5 inch finished) and then turned alternate blocks upside down to get the streak of lightning effect. 

I had to add some of my own red, yellow and orange scraps to the gifted scraps to make Streak of Lightning. 

Back on March 24 I received several bags of scraps and I decided to document all the donation quilts that I am able to make from those bags of scraps in Tales from the Scrap Yard. 

 I sorted all of the scraps into various categories and one of the sorts was a bin of warm colors - "14 quarts of warm". (Why do they use quarts as a bin volume measure? Why not call it a 3.5 gallon bin?)

The "14 quarts of warm" consisted of several chunks. I pulled out the largest chunk - the lollipop flowers- to use in a pieced quilt back. Most of the rest of the chunks went into Streak of Lightning. 

Now I am left with some strips of different lengths I sorted into little bundles by width. 

 I will now probably make blocks to add to WIPs. Most of those WIPs are Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects. 

And also in "14 quarts of warm" there is a big bag of pieces for crumb blocks. What I consider as crumbs are small odd shaped pieces. I'll deal with all the different bags of crumbs that came to the Scrap Yard at the end of the process. I've got a lot of my own crumbs to use and I have been thinking of a few different crumb blocks to make.

Tales From The Scrap Yard: Farewell To Green

I received several bags of scraps back on March 24. I sorted them into various categories and then started with a grocery bag of green scraps. The goal was to see how many small donation quilts approximately 40 x 6o I could make from those scraps. 

This is top #5 that came out of that bag of green plus some pink 6.5 inch squares with frogs that were also included with all of the scraps. The blue squares came from my scraps.

I was going to make Happy Blocks with the pink 6.5 inch squares in the center and bordered by 3 inch green pieces but none of the green pieces was long enough to use for two 11 inch sides that would be required. I always like to try to make the blocks for donation quilts around 10 inches if I can. So I decided to sew some of the 2 inch width scraps to the 3 inch scraps and then cut them to 6.5 inch lengths in order to border two sides of the pink centers. Well, then I needed some cornerstones and could not decide on a color. I finally thought...well, I have frogs, I have green land and so maybe I need to add water. And so I went to the scrap bin to find some water.  I had a blue that looked like water with stones in it and/or flower petals floating on top.  But of course I didn't have enough of that "water" so I had to piece a few cornerstones I kept near the edges with a different "water".

And so another top was made that will be donated when finished.  And that left me with just a few more scraps to deal with. 

I put the remaining pieces of pink fabric with frogs into my pink orphanage of pink parts, orphan blocks and odd bits of pink fabrics. I think there might be enough items in there to make a couple of quilt tops now. Well, not NOW...I mean later. 

Next I made a couple of 12 inch (finished) slab blocks. I first made a couple of 4 inch (finished) hearts from scraps to add to the blocks. I will make some of other colors to add to these blocks when I get the chance. They will all contain a red heart somewhere within the block. I made a "with heart" quilt like this in the past and really like how it turned out so why not make another? 

Then I had some 3.5 inch width pieces left over from making the Double Four Patch quilt so you know what I did with those...I made Four Patches for the Parts Department. That is almost always what I do now when I have at least two squares left over of 3.5 inch widths of fabric. I use low volume scraps for the alternate squares. 

I also make Four Patches with left over 2 inch scraps for the Parts Department. Everything else got cut into squares and if there was not enough for a square then it was sewn into a strip for a future Chinese Coins quilt.  Oh, I do also cut 3.5 x 2.5 rectangles and will continue until I reach 1600 which will be enough for two quilts I have in mind. ( I think I may be almost at the 1400 mark now). 

More squares in sizes I don't usually have --- 5, 5.5 and 7. 

I also added some strings to my box of all colors of the rainbow strings and...

 ...I added some crumbs to my crumb box.  I usually differentiate between crumbs and slab pieces. For me crumbs are usually irregular shapes and smaller than scrap pieces I use for slabs. 

Now that I've documented use of the green scraps I was gifted I'm ready to move on to the warm scraps- red/orange/yellow. So there will be more Tales from the Scrap Yard in the future.

I made this one to use some precut scraps in the bag that were 3.5 and 2 inches wide. 

I supplemented those scraps with some 3.5 and 2 inch wide scraps still sitting on my cutting mat left over from making last month's green Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) blocks. 

I also had a few scraps of green left in my 2 inch scrap bin that went into the quilt top. 

 And I also used some precut 3.5 inch lime green and bright green squares I received last year from a quilty friend.

On March 24 I met up for the first time with a fellow Stashbuster , Candra, who also lives in Iowa about 1.5 hours away from me. She had sent me an email asking if I wanted some scraps. Seriously?? I LOVE scraps. Candra even offered to deliver but a friend went with me and we drove west to meet her at a quilt shop and then we went to lunch. I had a delightful visit with Candra and stuffed the back of my friend's car with several bags of Candra's scraps. I couldn't wait to get home to the Scrap Yard and sort through them. I kind of analyzed all of the bags of the scraps first in order to figure out the best way to sort through them. In the past I used to sort through scraps I received and throw them into bins I stored by scrap width. But I emptied most of those scrap bins last year.  I sorted Candra's scraps into bags by color and then within those bags I sorted by fabric width. I also ended up with a bag of orphans and another of oddly shaped scraps because I think Candra made a lot of masks and surgical caps in the past year. There was also a plastic jar of bonus triangles not yet sewn together. 

When all was sorted I started with the bag of green scraps. I thought it would be fun to document what all will be made from this bag of scraps. My goal is to make donation quilts roughly of the size 40 x 60. 

First I took out the biggest piece of yardage and put it in with my camping/wildlife themed fabrics. I also took out some 1.5 inch pieces with roses and put those with my rose themed scraps. 

Then I took out the pieces that were at least five inches in width. On the right hand side are some of my own scraps that are 5 inches wide. I decided to add those so I would have enough scraps to make some large Churn Dash blocks - real scrap eaters. 

I made twelve Churn Dash variation blocks that finish at 13.5 inches. 

I added a 3 inch border to the top and bottom with my scraps and ended up with a quilt 40.5 x 60. 

The next scraps that came out of the bag were a bunch of 1.5 inch width scraps...

...some 2.5 inch width scraps and some 5 inch scraps left over from making Churn Dash blocks that I cut into 5 inch squares. 

I first framed the five inch squares with 1.5 x 5 inch  and 1.5 x 7 inch scraps...

...and then added a frame of 2.5 inch width scraps. I made 24 blocks that finished at 10.5 inches. 

In a 4 x 6 layout the quilt ended up 42 x 63 inches.

So...I made a mistake when I cut the 1.5 inch scraps for that previous quilt. I was thinking my center square was 4.5 inches instead of 5 inches so I cut some lengths at 6.5 inches instead of 7 inches. So, I decided to make another quilt to use those 6.5 inch pieces. Along with the 6.5 lengths of 1.5 inch width of scraps I found some 4.5 inch width of scraps in the green Candra scrap bag and cut those into 4.5 x 6.5 inch pieces. And in the brown bag of Candra scraps I remembered there were a whole lot of brown 1.5 inch strips. I cut those into 6.5 inch lengths. 

Then I made 32 blocks that consisted of four green strips bordered by two brown strips and I made 31 blocks that consisted of a 4.5 x 6.5 inch scrap bordered by two brown strips. 

I alternated blocks in a 7 x 9 layout and ended up with a little quilt 42 x 54. 

So, so far that makes 3 little green quilts from a grocery bag of scraps. But wait! There's still more green scraps in the bag. I'm not going to move on to another color until the green bag is empty so there will be more tales from the Scrap Yard coming soon!
