HSTeria and Wednesday Wandering

I recently received a large bag of 2.5 inch unfinished HSTs and HST parts. Some were pressed but needed trimming. Some were sewn together on Thangles and other paper foundations. And some were just triangles that needed another half.

So, with some of the dark/neutral HSTs I made some Depression Blocks. It's one of my favorites. These will finish at 8 inches and I think will go into a larger comfort quilt.

I also made some 4 inch finished Broken Dishes blocks.  I have a box of all different sizes of Broken Dishes blocks. One of these days I will make a few quilts and empty that box.

There were some dark/light HSTs that were two colors.  I decided to make them into columns of 40 HSTs for a finished length of 80 inches. When sewing them together like so the columns will form some diagonal light and dark stripes.  I think I need 30 columns of 40 HSTs.

I decided to iron some blocks with HSTs too. I have several baskets and small boxes full of parts and small blocks that need ironing. If I need leader/enders I sew up bits and pieces given to me but since I know I am not going to use them right away I never get around to ironing them. I need to start ironing because the baskets and shoeboxes are getting in my way.

Awhile ago someone gave me a gallon bag of batik 2 inch finished HSTS that needed ironing and dog ears trimmed.  I made 3 inch finished Broken Dishes blocks and some strips of 5 HSTs to add to a long term WIP.   Oh, and I did empty that bag!

And sew on...

A quick walk through the gardens.
Money plant  (Lunaria, Honesty) reseeds itself everywhere. Soon I will harvest and remove the brown outside part of the seed pods to reveal silvery disks. I remember my maternal great grandmother had vases of Lunaria all over her house. I was fascinated by them.

Lilies. I forget which kind these are.

Asiatic Lilies

Oh so fragrant Orienpet or Tree Lilies. They grow taller each year and are a cross between an Oriental and Trumpet Lily.

Roses

Daylilies

More Roses.

More Roses being strangled by bindweed.

Rose of Sharon

Milkweed. It has popped up everywhere this year!

And sow on...

We live in a very old and falling apart but paid for farmhouse. We don't have air conditioning and John's oxygen concentrator also puts out some heat. Since John has been sick so much the last couple of years I don't think he needs to also suffer from the heat too. I started researching portable room air conditioners and found one that would suit our needs and our house layout (it needs to vent to the outside via window) and square footage to cover. It was delivered while John was in the hospital and my son helped me get it set up. So now we do have a little heat relief (around 76 degrees) inside, thank goodness, in the living room/dining room area where John spends most of his time. Now I might have to set up my sewing machine on the dining room table.

I think that first lily is called a Martagon lily.
Hurray for getting some AC for John (and yourself, of course). I just have a window unit in the bedroom. I haven't moved my machine in yet. I have been going to a quilter friend's house who has AC. Today we have been invaded by wildfire smoke from MN, I think I read. The air is yellowish and I have to keep the windows closed. Fortunately, I'm going to my friend's house in about a half hour.
I have so many HST triangles and cut off triangles. I don't think I will ever use them all.

I love my die cut HSTs because there are no little ears to trim away. I have a couple of ideas percolating that involve 2" fin HSTs but nothing has been cut yet. And I agree that ironing them gets tedious and especially in HOT weather. Glad you have that room AC to help keep both of you more comfortable.

all of your flowers are so pretty. I think it is a good idea to get A/C for at least one room - the kind you are talking about is a window unit? Is your bedroom comfortable at night for sleeping? My sister had to finally get two units one is in the living room and the tiny kitchen is pretty open to that room so it cools that area off to and she got one that works for the bedroom and if she leaves the door open it helps cool off some of the other area of the house too.

What ?? no a/c??!! Okay you need to look at cold water air conditioner. They are little things (portable) (not that expensive) that work on cold water and electricity. That's all. No need for window or vent outside. I hear they are the best if you want to cool just one room. Might be worth looking into this.
I too love the depression block. I thought you were making the long HST ribbons for a border but, wow, an entire quilt? That will be fabulous. I enjoyed seeing your garden. The money plant is a lovely and fascinating plant. ;^)

I'm glad you figured out a way to use a portable A/C. With this tropical humidity, the heat is unbearable. There is only so much a fan can do with the air so hot.
I love all of your flower photos.

We had a 'swamp' cooler (hooked up to water with a small copper line, unit had a float) that was wonderful for keeping cool. All we had to do is winterize before the cold hit and replace the pads inside (very cheap) when needed. Son had a similar unit, but a window hung & he loved it, too. We both now live in a town where utilities are inexpensive (what a blessing) & don't need it now.

We had a swamp cooler in our cabin for years - hooked up a small copper line for water, replaced the pads when needed, and winterized it before winter. Easy, and the cooled air was wonderful! Our son has a similar unit (installed in his window) in his last house & he left it when he moved for the landlord who was moving back in after a divorce. Son moved to our town when our grandson graduated HS & it's inexpensive utilities, so no longer need one.
