It's a Flimsy! Peppermint Twist

Peppermint Twist
50 x 62.5

The Peppermint Twist song was released in 1961 - the year I turned 9 years old.  My dad was manager of a cafeteria at that time and the cafeteria had a rec(reation) room with a juke box. Mom would sometimes take us kids in to eat dinner at the cafeteria and afterwards we would wait in the rec room for Dad to get off work.  I remember us dancing around to The Twist and The Peppermint Twist and the employees thought we were so cute.

The Twist was good exercise. If I still did some twisting today I might be as skinny as my shadow.

Who knows when I started this. I found a couple of blocks and the peppermint fabrics in my Christmas project box back in January when I decided I wanted to try to use my holiday fabrics this year.  When I get some kind of what I think is a brilliant idea as to how to use certain fabrics I make a few blocks and put them with the fabrics so I don't forget my brilliant idea.
I had a little problem finding peppermint go-with fabrics in my stash but managed. That green/red orange checked fabric was in with the Halloween fabrics.

I made a large Dresden block and squared it off.

Now I have 80 pieces from the side trimmings I can play with.  I've sewn some of the pieces together and they measure about 13 inches in the center.  If I can find a suitable background or backgrounds (this one is already taken) I could maybe make large lemon peel blocks. Or they could be leaves on giant Jack in the Beanstalk columns of vines...
...or they could be a giant Peppermint Zinnia. But that kind of hurts my eyes right now.

And speaking of peppermint...
Has anyone else had to drink peppermint extract (or peppermint if available) dissolved in hot water when you had a stomach ache? That was my dad's cure. I quit telling him when I had a stomach ache.  I don't like the taste of peppermint.

You never cease to amaze me with your wild and beautiful color/pattern combos! I LOVE Peppermint Twist, especially that left-hand block in the center row of the first photo that swirls and twirls! This quilt glows! I hope you're going to keep it for yourself. My folks' remedy for upset stomach was paregoric. It was like firewater going down but usually worked! Our old small town doctor always had a supply in his office 'pharmacy' which was in the two front rooms of his house. He also made house calls! Gone are the days ...

Wow! I love both the quilt and the NEW quilt made from the trimmings. Ingenious. :)

"Let's twist Again, like we did last summerrrr." lol I loved doing the twist..it was popular when I was growing up. Along with the Watusi, and the Jerk --funny how these things stay with you--
Love that flimsy--it will always remind you of dancing, won't it now? how wonderful is that ;))) hugs, Julierose

Thank you for showing the ruler. I have wanted to make this block for a long time and wasn't sure of the angle. And, coincidentally, I went in search of that ruler among my collection just this week for another project and found not one, but two! I can do this!

Love your peppermint twist. Thanks for sharing your method. Can't wait to see what you do with the cut off pieces. Sounds like you have some great ideas.

You sure do have the eye for putting fabrics together and you always come up with wonderful themes. I don't like peppermint either but I do love your quilt. Then what you did the trimmings OMG!

Wow! Thank is a gorgeous combination of colors and I love the dot circle. This reminds me that I have a vintage spin layered and ready to be quilted. It has a wool bat so I had to hide it from Molly (and then I forgot about it...)

I still enjoy peppermint candy canes and a peppermint mocha, in small amounts of course.
Great movement and contrast in that flimsy, very eye catching.
Congratulations!

I love this quilt and peppermint also. My hubby keeps little peppermint mints in his pocket at all times for his stomach. Remember the twist...ah, the old days. Thanks for sharing your method.

This one is as sweet as candy! How did you manage to use pink, red and green without it looking Christmassy? Must be those wild twists :)

I've seen that design before but didn't know it could be done with the Dresden ruler. BTW - I don't like peppermint either, but I do like spearmint and wintergreen.

I remember the Twist, too -- how scandalous it was! Your peppermints are minty-fresh. I took my wedge ruler out just last evening . . .

Peppermint Twist is such a fun quilt! The polka dot centers are the perfect finishing touch. My dad was a music distributor and we had a jukebox in our basement rec room. Sure wish I still had that jukebox and all those 45's now!

I love your Peppermint Twist quilt! Just like you, I cannot stand the taste of peppermint. Give me spearmint any time!

Oh, yay - I love your peppermint twist and now I have a justification for buying that dresden ruler that I got for no good reason. (Or at least I can't remember whatever reason I might have cobbled up - I've never planned to make a dresden plate quilt. I just have this ruler in my desk drawer...)
I also love what you're doing with those peppermint leftovers! That's going to be fun!
My mom's remedy for upset stomachs was a spoonful of coca cola syrup - she used to get it at the soda fountain at the drug store back when drug stores had soda fountains. When soda fountains disappeared, she switched to giving us spoonfuls of flat coke - she'd pour some and let it fizz out just for that purpose. (I still hate Coke to this day, kinda like how you feel about peppermint!)
