A Quilt of Valor

Quilt of Valor
60 x 84

I hope to surprise my brother-in-law, Bert, a veteran, with this on Veteran's Day.  I just have to remember to get it mailed off when it's closer to time.  I need to finish one more Quilt of Valor for the three veteran family members I hope to surprise - my nephew, my sister's husband and my husband's brother.

I used 140 six inch blocks - some left over Twinklers from a past Quilt of Valor, some Chunky Churn Dashes from a swap and some Snowballs.

I quilted it on my DSM with some freemotion loops and stars.

I pieced a few fabrics for the back.

This is also goal #2 in my list   for     Q3 Finish-A-Long.

Another Star

I have finished another Triangle Star.

I make one of these 18 3/4 stars each month in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colors using miscellaneous sized bits and pieces of scraps large enough for a triangle or two.  I see a couple of shirts and shorts I made for the granddaughters in here as well as pieces from a Valentine quilt, a Turning Twenty quilt and an "I Love Cherries" quilt.    The green background was a chunk leftover from a quilt backing.

Got Scraps?

Q3 FAL: The Goals

It's time to declare some 3rd Quarter goals.  Since I have so many UFOs I like goals. It helps me narrow down what to work on.

1.  Disappearing Four Patch - A Quilt of Valor.  I need lots more blocks.

2. Another Quilt of Valor. I just need to finish binding.

3. Donation quilt from orphan blocks - Happy Blocks in a Peace Sign theme. This just needs binding.

4. Donation quilt from some really, really, really old swapped Bow Tie blocks.  It's pinned and ready for some quilting.

5. Wonky Logs Donation quilt. The batting is pieced and it's ready to be sandwiched, quilted and bound.

6.  ABC baby quilt for nephew's baby due on Halloween.   I have several sets of 6.5 inch ABCs from swaps.  These will become Happy Blocks.

7. See you in the Funny Papers...er, I mean comics.  I hope it will soon be a MARVELous quilt for my grandson. Yes, more Happy Blocks!

8. Broken Wheel.  Batting is pieced and backing is ready.

9. Frazzled...aka Fractured.  Batting and backing are ready.

10. I need to sew 130 six inch blocks together and then finish it up.

11. Just needs the top red row and then I'll look for a backing.

12. Wild Kingdom Jacob's Ladder.  It needs some work.

 13. String Star. I'm going to hand quilt but without air-conditioning it's too hot to work on it. I'm going to get it sandwiched so it will be ready if there is a cooler day.

In the Pink 2.5

Pink is the new color of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
I have a granddaughter that has loved the color pink since she was old enough to say the word. Without her I probably wouldn't have very many pink scraps.

I dug into the 2.5 scrap bin and made a couple of 8 inch Depression Blocks and a few sprouts.  The rest of the 2.5 scraps will have to wait until next week.

One Quilty July Goal

I have completed a Quilts of Valor top
60 x 84
I hope to have this completely finished at month end.

Gwennie Inspired Medallion QAL - Childhood Border

 Gwennie Inspired Medallion QAL #1

Basket was the theme for the center block and childhood was the theme for the first border.
Cookies at Christmas is what I chose for my second border.  My husband and I, our kids and our grandkids all have memories centered around Christmas cookie baking so I made up a few Happy Blocks with Christmas cookies in them for my border and then appliqued recipes and "cookies" here and there.

I traced around the old recipe cards from my husband's mom's recipe card file and wrote those out in ultra fine sharpie on muslin I had soaked in homemade bubble jet set.   I also copied recipes from my mom's old Cooky Book that is falling apart.  I especially remember her snickerdoodles and thumbprint cookies.  The Magic Cookie Bar recipe I cut from a magazine years ago. The reason I included that recipe is because our family has called those cookies Windowsill Hiders (not Magic Cookie bars) for a long time. My oldest son (now 42), when he was around 11, had a bedroom downstairs and everyone else slept upstairs. One morning I woke him up to get ready for school and found a bunch of those Magic Cookie bars hiding behind the curtains on his windowsill.

I also traced around the cookie cutters to make my applique shapes. The metal ones came from my husband's family and I just had to include Scooby because he's good for all seasons of sugar cookie making.  That was always the favorite cookie cutter of my kids and now of my grandkids.  (Maybe because it makes the biggest cookies?)

My husband still makes his favorite gumdrop cookies every Christmas but has left the Hard Tack behind. His parents used to make that every year and store it in old cookie tins wrapped in waxed paper.  He and his siblings (all 7 of them) used to call that cookie Heart Attack instead of Hard Tack.

Weaving

From the time I was very little I loved crafts. My sisters loved dolls. I loved crafts. If I played with any dolls it was paper dolls - and that is because I would trace around them and make my own paper doll clothes.

Weaving was one of the crafts I have enjoyed over the years.
I started out with one of those potholder looms. I made potholders of every design I could think of. Of course those darned things were so small and did not server well as a potholder but I kept on making them for everyone I knew. I was always going to try making them all into a rug but never got to that point.   My loom was made of metal. The looms my daughter (now almost 40) had (and I still have as seen above) were made of hard plastic.  I looked around for my real and very small loom so I could include what I moved on to next but it's probably thrown up in the attic somewhere. I found the instructions for the loom in my old dusty weaving book.  I made belts for everyone with it. I have a pic somewhere of me wearing one but also couldn't find it.  If I remember correctly I used crochet thread to make them.  And finally there's the circular looms that make nice stocking caps that look like they were knitted.  My granddaughters said they wanted to learn to make some so they might be using those next.  (They weren't interested in making any potholders, thank goodness).

I can tell you that it's not as easy to simulate weaving in quilting as it is to actually weave!

Childhood for the theme was Cynthia's (of Wabi-Sabi Quilts) idea so she's hosting the link up this month.   It will be fun to see how everyone interprets the theme.

Kaleidoscopes, Butterflies, Kaleidoscopes of Butterflies

I didn't make any new kaleidoscope of butterflies blocks this month but I did make a few new butterflies.

And I've been trying to stay caught up on my waste triangle butterflies on blue tone on tone scraps too.   I might now be close to out of blue fabrics I can use for this and don't want to buy anything. Hmmm, I guess there's some gray and white in the summer sky as well as a few touches of pink and yellow.  I probably have a few scraps in those colors.

I was hoping to get a few pictures of butterflies in the garden this month but I've been sooooo busy with other things. Maybe next month.

Did you know that a group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope?
