Two more finishes!

A couple of years ago I made six inch Nine Patch blocks as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project and also it was one of the last blocks I made to empty out my 2.5 inch scrap bin. Now instead of keeping scraps in bins by size I try to use scraps as they are made or if scraps are larger chunks I now store them by color. 

Well, I made three tops but I still have not used up all the Nine Patches. Last year I quilted the Snowball/Nine Patch that used the yellow, red, pink and orange Nine Patches.  For these two quilts I used the Nine Patch as the center for blocks. 

Sister's Choice

For this one I used the lighter colored Nine Patches for the centers of some Sister's Choice blocks that finish at 10 inches. 

I quilted in the ditch between blocks and then stitched on the diagonals.  I'm not sure if you can tell or not but I used a large Easter egg print for the binding.  Someone gave it to me a long time ago and I could never figure out how to use it in a donation quilt for kids so that it didn't look like Easter eggs. Since most of the colors in the fabric were in the quilt I thought I'd give it a try.

Framed Nine Patch

For this one I used the multicolored Nine Patches as the centers for Framed Nines that finish at 10 inches. 

The frames were also multicolored 2.5 inch scraps. 

I quilted it with horizontal and vertical lines. The binding was also multicolored - a stripe.  It all makes for a pretty wild and crazy quilt.

Nine Patch November: Sister's Choice and Framed Tops

I mentioned in an earlier blog post that I wanted to concentrate this month on using both three and six inch Nine Patches. The Parts Department needs an inventory reduction!

Last year, I finally emptied out my 2.5 inch scrap bin and one of the last blocks I made was Nine Patches.  Since then whenever I have 2.5 inch left overs  I have also made Nine Patches. 

I picked out some of the lighter colored Nine Patches and turned them into 10 inch (finished) Sister's Choice blocks. 

I had set aside a little box of pastel colored scrap chunks to make some Sawtooth Stars blocks for baby quilts so used some of those scraps to cut the pieces for the HSTs and squares needed to turn the Nine Patches into Sister's Choice blocks. 

I also have a little drawer with neutral scrap chunks that doesn't seem to have a bottom so that's what I used for the neutral backgrounds. 

This one is a little bit wilder. I picked out the multicolored Nine Patches for this one and turned them into 10 inch (finished) Framed Nine Patches. Actually they could be called Happy Nine Patches because I made them the same way I make Happy Blocks. 

I also had a little box of multicolored scrap chunks to use for the frames.  

I tried to pick out mostly blue multicolor but didn't have quite enough frames so added in a few orange frames. 

Next I will be working on a larger top that uses red and yellow nine patches. And I'm working on several tops that use 3 inch Nine Patches. More on that later. 

 

Oh, Those 39Ps !

A few months ago I decided to dig into my bin of three inch nine patches (39Ps) and make some Path and Stiles blocks using the 39Ps as the block centers. I pulled out blocks in two colorways and then tried to match fabrics to make the block. 

I think it takes me longer to pick through my scraps to find fabrics that "match" than it does to make the blocks. 

I'm also using the 39Ps in two colorways as the centers for some Framed Stars. 

I'm also using 39Ps as the centers for these blocks whatever their name. (How about Framed Nine Patch).  I'm using 39Ps in a color plus neutral; however I see I have an orange and yellow one in this batch.  These will have a neutral sashing with dark squares on each end and white/neutral cornerstones so a little nine patch forms. 

This year I've been trying to get all my new starts to flimsy stage before year end. If I don't get them to flimsy stage then at least I hope to make complete blocks sets so they can go into my Some Assembly Required (SAR) box. Year end will be here before I know it so I've been trying to make a few of each of these blocks every week. 

I used to swap 39Ps quarterly for a number of years. Even though I have made 4 large quilts with them I still have a 14 quart bin of them. The grocery bag has ones with light corners. With those I've been thinking I will make a quilt similar to the Framed Nine Patch with sashing but make it the reverse of the current WIP.

Sister's Choice 

One of the next quilts I plan to make is inspired by this vintage quilt. I think one of the gallon bags in the bin is filled with possible 39Ps for this quilt but I'm not sure anymore. And I'm not sure what those numbers are I jotted down in the margin. Guess when I'm ready to make the quilt I'll figure it out. 

 

Tuesday Tidbits

I recently received a gallon bag of 1.5 inch strips in a variety of lengths. 

I wanted to process them right away since I have slowly been trying to empty my 1.5 inch scrap bin and it is actually almost empty except for browns and blacks. So I put the browns and blacks from the gallon bag into my scrap bin and I pulled out the few colored scraps left in the scrap bin and went to work  play. 

With the longest pieces I made some 5 inch (finished) Framed Nine Patches. The other day I was musing as to how to set them and I received a nice comment with an excellent suggestion so I'm going to try that and keep on making these. 

Then I made some 5 inch (finished) Rails. I should count how many I have now because I've been making these for awhile. Maybe they will turn into some Diagonal Bars Blocks. 

Then I cut 1.5 x 2.5 pieces and made some 6 inch (finished) 18 Patches. Maybe I should count these also.  When I make these blocks I try to alternate light and darks of the same color in each block. 

Then I made some 3 inch (finished) Nine Patches in two colors or two shades for use in my Framed Stars and Path and Stiles.  Even though I have a bin of these little Nine Patches I don't have many in two colors. 

Then I cut more 1.5 x 2.5 pieces (bundles of 10) for Lynn's (Klein Meisje Quilts) version of a Lego quilt.  I've been wanting to make a Lego Quilt for ages and this method just makes the most sense to me.  This box is small so when I see I have 8 bundles I will make a block. 

Then I cut some postage stamps (1.5 inch squares). 

Then I made a Lego Block that looks a little crooked. I guess I will revisit those last three rows. (Maybe someone doesn't cut accurately.) I made this block before I took the Lego Box photo so it looks like I'm already due to make another.
