A Churn Dash Finish

Churn Dash
40.5 x 60

UFO Prevention!
Hey, someone gifted me some plaids and homespuns and I made three kiddo sized tops already and now two of them have been quilted! And, I pieced batting for all of them too!

I used some of the brown and green plaids in this one and combined those with some brown and green floral scrap chunks of mine. Then I added in some aqua scraps for fun.

I quilted it with leaves in brown thread on my DSM.

Why leaves?
They go with the sticks on the back.  Same sticks were used for binding.

Ready for donation!
Not as colorful as yesterday's donation quilt but earth tones need some lovin' too!

And sew on...

Churning Through Plaids

Churn Dash Variation Top
40.5 x 63

For another donation quilt.

I mentioned a few days ago that someone gave me some homespun and plaid fabrics. I had a few of my own too. I set aside most of the reds and blues for a Quilt of Valor quilt to make later. For this one I used most of the brown and green plaids to make 13.5 inch (finished) Churn Dash blocks.

In January I started out with the intention of using a pile of brown scrap chunks and I still had those chunks laying out so I added in a few brown scraps for backgrounds for the green plaid Churn Dashes and then I added in some green scraps for backgrounds for the brown plaid Churn Dashes. (Whew, that's a sentence! Hope you didn't get lost in there).

Then since I had aqua scraps out because aqua was the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for February I added in a bit of cheer in each block with some aqua scraps.

It warmed up a bit yesterday and most of the ice has now melted so I'm back to clothesline photos even if the sun is not at the right spot for them.

And sew on...

It's a Finish! Dashing Through the '30s

Dashing Through the '30s
It's a finish!

92 x 92

13.5 inch Churn Dash Variation blocks in '30s reproduction fabrics.
Hey, this is one I actually made from yardage and not from scraps!
But I did use the scraps from making this quilt in Ribbon Candy which was finished in January of this year.

Red polka dot and red gingham borders.

Big stitch hand quilted with perle cotton #8 in a variety of colors that match the colors in the blocks.

I don't normally like square quilts but they work fine on our bed. I can rotate it because any side can be the top or bottom.

I used muslin on the back. The back of bed quilts don't need to be fancy. And I kind of like it that my hand stitching shows up.

Now since this quilt is finished and handy I can take it with us on our trip in a couple of days. We have to take our own bedding with us. We are going to meet up with five of my husband's seven siblings and their spouses in a cabin we rented for the occasion - an early Thanksgiving with family from North Carolina, Texas, Illinois and Iowa.

We will leave early Friday morning and be back Monday afternoon. It is approximately a six hour round trip so now I need to get something pin basted and in the hoop ready for some hand quilting in the car.

Quilts of September #9, #10, #11

Hole in the Barn Door, Churn Dash Variation, Monkey Wrench

Variations of the same block.

The backs.

Hole in the Barn Door
I used red fabrics for the "barns", animal fabrics for the holes and old florals for the backgrounds.

Quilted with spirals.

The binding is a red, white and brown stripe.

There's barnyard animals on the back with a little piece of what was left of one of the "barns" to add length.

Churn Dash Variation

Lots of green scrap chunks were used up in this one.

This was also quilted with spirals and has a scrappy green binding.

It's difficult to see but the backing is a green and orange print. Again, I had to add a little piece for length.

Monkey Wrenches

Lots of brown chunks were used up making these 10 inch blocks. Binding is all scrappy browns.

I quilted it with vertical and horizontal lines.

The backing is an African looking print.

All backing pieces came to me from different friends.
All battings were pieced.
All are donation quilts.

And on to the next!

Nine Patch Metamorphosis

You may or may not know that last year I entirely cleaned out my 2.5 inch width scrap bin. The very last blocks to come out of there was Nine Patches for the Parts Department. And after I emptied that scrap bin I have been making Nine Patch blocks every time I have 2.5 inch scraps left over from any project.   So now the Parts Department has a lot of Nine Patch inventory and the Nine Patches are in their own bin.  I thought since this month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color is blue I would dig...

...through the Nine Patches and pull out the blues. I also tried to divide all of them up into stacks for future quilts.

First I pulled all of the dark blue nine patches out of the bin and combined them with some red HSTs and light blue HSTs and made some of these four teen inch blocks (don't know the name so I'll call it churn dash variation).  So from now on whenever I end up with dark blue nine patches they will get made into these blocks until I end up with 20 blocks for a quilt. I am keeping with this colorway for these blocks so no other color of nine patch will be used in the centers.

Then I pulled out the pastel/light blue Nine Patches and made some ten inch Sister's Choice blocks. I sorted out a stack of other light colored nine patches and those will also be made into Sister's Choice blocks.

The bright blue nine patches will be combined with other bright blue nine patches and made into an Irish Chain quilt.   The red and yellow nine patches will be made into framed nine patches.  I have a few other sorted piles and am still thinking of what I will do with those. Maybe Sawtooth Stars or set on point or  maybe alternating with snowballs or hourglasses or...
