What's In The Hoop?

What's in the hoop? Basket Four Patch.

I actually now have something in the hoop. It's been awhile. After I got it into the hoop that I like which is a PVC type square hoop, the hoop broke. Well, actually a couple of the side pieces that clamp on to the fabric have cracks in them and won't hold the fabric down. Then I put the quilt into this bigger wooden hoop and it cracked. I was able to use duct tape to hold it together. I guess hoops are not all they are cracked up to be! Ah, yes, I crack myself up!

So, anyway, I have this little 40 x 56 crib quilt in the hoop. I actually started the blocks back in 2017. The little basket four patch blocks were inspired by an antique quilt at Q Is For Quilter.  Before you call me crazy for hand quilting a baby quilt, well, that's about all I felt I could handle for now and I like to hand quilt. I NEED to hand quilt in the evenings to get out of my slump. And besides...a small quilt is all I could pin baste. I usually pin baste my quilts on the living room floor. Right now my living room has several card tables set up in it. Those tables are full of flowers and veggies we've started under lights in a corner of my sewing space and now have moved into smaller containers for  hardening off before I move them to the gardens. We take the plants out to the deck off the living room to toughen up and get used to the elements and then bring them back in to the card tables each day. Well, short story long or long story short...I don't have much room to pin baste a quilt much larger than this one.

I'm using ecru perle #12 for hand quilting - big stitching on a small quilt.

Remember I said I wanted to move forward a few UFOs with baskets? Well, I am. This is basket quilt #2.

I'm quilting on the diagonal in the squares.

And I'm quilting around the outside of the little four inch basket blocks as well as inside the three muslin triangles in the basket which is kind of difficult to do with big stitching. Those little HSTs are 1 inch.

I pieced the batting. Normally when I machine quilt I just overlap the batting pieces a tiny bit. I used to zig zag them together but found when quilting on my DSM that the needle would hit those zig zagged areas and have a fit.   Well, anyway, since I am hand quilting I pieced the batting together by hand with a herringbone stitch.

I really like your quilting. How wonderful to use up some UFO blocks. This is going to be a great baby quilt. So sorry that your hoops broke though. I am glad you could duct tape the wooden one.

That's a sweet design with the baskets in the 4 patch setting, Cathy! I think hand-quilting any size quilt sounds like an enjoyable thing to do. It won't be long before you get those plants out in the garden and can have your space back!

The combination of pink and brown quilts are one of my favorites as are the baskets. Good idea on hand basting batting scraps. It looks like it will also lay more softer and natural. It’s going to be a pretty quilt. It’s crazy, but plastic does dry out over time and cracks. Clever statement on cracking yourself up.

Sorry about the slump - the handwork will almost certainly soothe the spirit and progress is always invigorating. Sending good thoughts!!!

I think four-patch baskets are my favorite way to piece these. Well, until I find another basket pattern that I like. (There are so many.) Hope the meditative act of hand quilting restores your equilibrium. (Hey -- how about that for a quilt name?)

You cracked me up too! LOL
So happy to see you have a quilt in the hoop, even though it's cracked! This smaller project will tide you over until planting season is done. Enjoy!

I hear you on the slump and quilting a small quilt is a perfect way to get out of it. Enjoy your stitching (love the photo of the herringbone stitch on the batting. I need to try that next time!).

Hand quilting certainly is a nice relaxing thing to do. I dont do much of this these days, only for special items which have my version of simple embroidery on them, they really need hand quilting I feel. And big stitch in perle cotton quilts up fast, I find.

Sorry your hoops have cracked. A few years ago I ordered a square hoop from Beehappyquilting.com. it's wood, very sturdy, made in Germany. I love it! Have used it to quilt quite a few quilts and it shows no stress at all. No affiliation with the store, just wanted you to know about this option as I've not seen these hoops anywhere else.

I have used this method for pinbasting on smaller tables.

Hope you find this useful for future quilts.

I love the old time feel of this little quilt and the hand quilting is perfect, baby quilt or not!

I stop almost every time I see a brown and pink quilt. That combination has always struck me as beautiful. Love your baskets. I also have had my plastic gripper pieces crack on my PVC hoops; maybe it's a design flaw? And one more thing - I absolutely piece together batting leftovers! I cannot bear to cut off the excess and let it go into the waste basket!

Love basket quilts and love pink and brown together! I wish I lived closer as I have a large round and an oval quilt hoop that I don't use. Shipping something like this is so expensive.
