Straight line winds came through with a storm today and took out power for four hours. The winds made such an eerie sound like a woman screaming. This is the second time this summer we have had storms with straight line winds. We have lots of trees down on our property again. This one was that fell and blocked the entire driveway. My hubby is actually using my small battery operated chain saw because he doesn't have gas for his. He has to clear the driveway in order to go get gas maybe tomorrow.
This branch fell on the roof of my sewing room which used to be a small back porch so it has a flat roof. Other big branches fell very very close to the window of my sewing room. Strangely none of the pots on the deck railing were blown off.
This branch didn't exactly fall all the way off but it is still swaying in the wind.
This tree branch fell near the camper we keep parked in back. I think it fell on to the clothesline it probably broke the fall a little or it might have fallen on top of or might have gone through the camper. The branch with a pointy end extends out to the front of the camper which is out of the picture.
We were lucky and are thankful there were no serious damages. But there's a lot of clean up work for us to do tomorrow.
I went and looked briefly in the gardens and thankfully no trees fell into the flower gardens which is what usually happens. But in the veggie garden all the tomatoes and peppers are blown over cages and all and tomatoes are laying everywhere. My husband is heartbroken. Those are the two of the things he starts from seeds saved from previous years and babies along. Maybe when we look at it in a new light tomorrow it won't be as bad as it appears at first glance.
Tomorrow is supposed to be mostly sunny.

I wondered about you when I saw the story in the online paper. We've had straight line winds here and they can do tremendous damage. Fingers crossed that your veggies are not a total loss.
Crossing my fingers for your veggies. Tomatoes re-root easily, but the peppers - oh dear...

It looks terrible and reminds me of the aftermath of hurricane Ike. So many branches down. I'm glad your house was spared and hope your vegetables make a comeback. At least enough to get seeds for next year. Isn't your husband fortunate you had a battery powered saw?

I'm happy that nothing too major happened. Learn something new every day....I had never heard the term "straight line wind" I had to look it up. Thank you for adding to my knowledge.
This is one of those situations where you have to look at things and say it could have been much worse. Fallen trees and lost vegetables are not fun, but you and your house and camper all survived. I looked at this storm line and wondered how much would make it to the east, but we got absolutely nothing. In fact we've had nor measurable rain in a week and none expected for at least 5 more days.

I'm glad no one was hurt and the property damage wasn't worse. I'm worried that so much of Iowa was hit by this storm, with all the crops so far along. Lots of silos damaged, too, which will make the harvest tricky this year. 2020 just keeps handing out bad news, doesn't it?

SEW glad to hear the most serious serious damage you sustained was to the tomatoes and peppers. My condolences to your DH on their loss.
Relieved to know you are okay, Cathy. The storm's approach was in Chicago news all day Monday. It barreled in as forecast, 4 p.m. for us -- but we were on the northern edge and got some wind gusts, not bad, and some rain, not much. The power blinked for a fraction of a second and that was all. The brunt of the storm hit south of with a tornado touching down on the north side of the city. Most power has been restored.
About nine years ago a derecho did hit our area. Many trees were toppled all over town and at the state park. A tree fell on the main power line to the block that the library is on -- we didn't have power for two weeks so we were closed. At the height of summer programming. (And the library's insurance company would NOT pay for "disruption of business." Grrr.)
I’m so glad you’re okay and had power back so fast. Derechos are devastating. A hurricane without the publicity/warning. You have made me feel quite grateful and today I’m going to go go around thanking running water and stroking power cords.

OMGosh I hated to read this but am glad the damage wasn't worse. We used to have storms in Indiana with straight line wind all the time. I particularly remember one that came up quick when Laurie was little and we were in the grocery store. The cart returns were blown everywhere in the lot and the entire line of electric poles were broke off in the middle. I could name quite a few more from memory.
Glad you are OK and hope some of the plants survived.
