Red Scraps - Potpourri Edition

Red is the color of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. But that's about to change soon.

I used 4.5 inch scraps to make some Flying Geese bodies.  For the other part (wings?) I have been using secondary colors if the color of the month is a primary color and vice versa.

Last week when I was working with 3.5 inch scraps I made the bottom sets of butterfly wing HSTs and now this week when I was working with 4.5 inch scraps for the Flying Geese I made the top sets of wings and paired the two up in some red butterflies.   I've also (obviously) been using up bits and pieces of white on white (WOW) scraps.

And, oh those waste triangles! I had lots of red ones in the box. I  have been saving blue on blue (BOB) or blue solid scraps for the "sky" background for these little butterflies - a kaleidoscope of butterflies!

I have hundreds of these little four inch blocks now so maybe I need to decide just how many is enough.  ( I wonder if I can count that high).

I also used waste triangles in these Wonky Stars (with 2 inch scrap backgrounds and red center).

Then I used more waste triangles (I have gads of them - that's what you call a box of waste triangles, right? - a gad) on some Wonky Hearts.  The hearts were 2 x 4.5 red scraps and I used white waste triangles for the background. I have lots of white waste triangles so was experimenting a little with those hearts. I'm thinking I might use them as Wonky Log Cabin centers.

Then I used a couple of scrap chunks to make my improv circle.  I have been using red and brown as my constants in these along with the RSC color so only made one.

Then I made 3 large Burgoyne Surrounded blocks with bits and pieces of different red/pinkish scraps.  (I made the one in the upper right previously so just used it to fill in for the photo.)  Now that I see them together I'm thinking I'll skip the sashing and just make more blocks.  I really don't like making sashing/adding sashing strips so why torture myself?  But, then again, when I look at the inspiration quilt  I'm thinking maybe making/adding sashing isn't really that painful.

Love your pot pourri of blocks. Yes, "gads" is a perfect word - love it! Once again, I am amazed by how many varied blocks you made with your red scraps. The small red Wonky Stars really appeal and your idea of making the little red hearts the centre of log cabin blocks is great. The butterfly quilt will be lovely.

I looked at the original quilt. The sashing does add visual effect. But it is your quilt, you make it however you want!

My goodness - so many scrappy red blocks. I think I'll steal your idea for the kaleidoscope butterfly's - I'm making lots of little triangles with my blossoms....

Gads. Not to be confused with gadzooks, which is the exclamation one uses when their friend sews up a storm of amazing blocks with their red scraps!

Lots of fun red quilting eye candy this week! I also enjoy the variety of prints you have - I found Snoopy up there in the top photo! Every time I see your waste triangle butterfly blocks, I want to go make some. Maybe that's what I'll do this afternoon!

I can't even imagine what a gad of waste triangles must look like. I hope they don't get spilled near an open window on a very windy day! You will have to vacuum them up, but it will probably get clogged and you will have to go buy a new vacuum, all because of saving all those little triangles.

Lots of lovely blocks, I really like your 'flying geese' - on my 'to do' list!

You keep so many amazing projects on the go all at once! I'd love to do that, I'd have to figure out where to store them all. At the moment I have three small kids so I try and keep stuff out of their reach!! I've seen paper plates used successfully by a few bloggers recently. It's hard to be minimalist, organised and on top of everything when you're trying to be creative!!!!

Cathy, I am going to have to quit reading your blog - all your pretty eye candy makes me want to run to my scraps and start a bunch of new quilts. Especially those butterfly blocks. Not sure I can say no to those!

My but you did a lot with red! I finally had to start throwing out my tiny waste triangles. They were becoming a burden on my soul. I especially like the Burgoyne Surrounded blocks. If it were me I'd leave out the sashing; I don't think it adds enough to the quilt to make it worth the effort. But we've already seen that you aren't intimidated by extra little blocks and pieces!
