Rail Fence
5 inch unfinished
Made with 2 inch width scraps. All with black centers.
I added some purple Rail Fences to my little stack of blocks. Then I counted them up and found I had 50.
I then decided to cut the same amount of 5 inch squares of black/multicolor scraps.
And now I think I am ready to assemble a small comfort quilt alternating Rail Fences and squares.
Buckeye Beauty
6 inch finished
Made with 2 inch width scraps and 3.5 inch width scraps.
Easy Breezy
( a Puss in the Corner variation)
6 inch blocks
More blocks made with 2 inch width scraps. After I made blocks with purple scraps I caught up on some using orange scraps that I cut last month but never got around to sewing together.
And sew on...

Yesterday I harvested my onions that will last me the rest of the year. This variety is Patterson and it stores well. Now that John gets his nutrition via g-tube I am not sure I will be able to eat all those myself so will probably give some away. I do love onions! Time for some onion rings! I use a simple recipe for them I found in an old cookbook.
I harvested a few other things too. Blackberries are ripening and I have picked about two and a half quarts so far. I have used some in yogurt smoothies and since today will be cooler and rainy I am thinking of making a small cobbler using my maternal grandmother's recipe. The rest I will probably freeze and make jam later when weather is cooler. Jam always makes a nice little Christmas gift. This year I grew some little cabbages called Pixie. Looks like enough for me to make a little Cole slaw. I continue to eat and freeze beans. I dug a hill of potatoes but it did not yield much. Tomatoes are starting to ripen but they are a lot smaller than normal and that may be due to the weather. Hoping for some bigger and better tomatoes soon. The peppers are starting to ripen. I started several varieties from seed. None of them are hot peppers. John was the hot pepper lover but I can't tolerate the heat.

I received two packages of pieces and parts, scraps and strings and roses from Barbara yesterday. Oh joy! That made my day. And I see more comfort quilts in my future that will hopefully make someone else's day.

That is a lot more onions than I would eat in a year!! You have a pretty good yield from your garden. My tomatoes have all been small so far too. One Early Girl is ripening now and it is the largest so far.
great amount from the garden - I am the only vegetable eater here I can barely get my husband to eat any of them. I have some peppers that are growing from two plants that I have in a pot it said sweet red peppers. They are shaped like yours but still green not red. They are a bit smaller than yours are - I haven't a clue how soon before they turn red.
Gorgeous purple and black blocks - all of them! It has me wanting to make some of them too but most of my fabric is still packed away in storage. I am in quilting withdrawal! You have an incredible garden too. It must be so awesome to be able to use fresh veggies in your cooking and meals, and healthier too. And you know for sure you don't need to worry about recalls due to poor handling or farming, etc. And everything tastes SO much better!
What a fine harvest! I made sugar free strawberry jam this year, first time. Love all those scrappy blocks!
I love onions and buy them regularly, add them to all meat dishes and even make French Onion soup. I like your purple and black rail fence blocks.
Your Rail Fence blocks are so much more interesting to look at than mine. Love the frogs. Beautiful, colourful prints on black background always make me go Ohhh! Love, love, love the Buckeye Beauty blocks in purple. Wow!!
You got a lot of onions on that table. I was thinking of French onion soup with beef broth. Yum! but it's way too hot to eat that. Your garden is coming in nicely. Enjoy! ;^)
i don’t know how to store onions. My store bought ones go bad sometimes so i would be a disaster storing as many as your yield! How wonderful to enjoy the fruits of your gardening. I abandoned mine this year due to too much going on at home. The mint is back without help though. I love your scrappy quilts in progress. i’m just wrapping up two quilt tops for texas quilt victims. Those poor families. We all have to count our blessings!
You are really making good use of your scraps. I always like seeing your color combinations. Congratulations on your garden. It looks like you got just what you needed and then some for storing. I have always liked onions. When I was a little girl, I would eat fresh sliced onions and a glass of tea! Now, I like to stir fry cabbage and onions. I also eat them with red beans and sweet pickles. I do like them on a hamburger as well. :)
I love those purple rails! I'm sure a young lady would like this. I so admire all the quilts you get made. At this point I still have some family/friends who need quilts, so my donations are usually limited to one or two a year But it is my goal to increase that number! My black raspberries grew like crazy this year with all the rain. They will also be made into jam later this year.
As I only grow tomatoes, rhubarb and blackberries in my small courtyard garden, I am envious of your yield. We are getting tomatoes, and ours seem smaller too. But still, I see BLTs on our menu this week (turkey bacon from Costco). As always, you have brilliant solutions and endless scrap possibilities from your scraps! All in all, it sounds like you had a great week!
My goodness! Reading your post and all the gardening comments is making my tummy rumble! Love that Byckeye Beauty@
So much great scrappiness going on & that pile of onions is ginormous. Way to grow!!
