More Than Three Sheets to the Wind
84 x 96
Hand quilted
I used pattern instructions found in The Best of Fons and Porter: Scrap Quilts I used mostly light colored long string scraps that were leftover trimmings from quilt backings - most of them sheets. (Now you know how the quilt got it's name). This is the second quilt I've made from the pattern. The first had a navy background and I used long bright strings.
I didn't worry if I had enough of the same strings in the same sizes to make the stars symmetrical. I think that is what makes it look rather vintage to me. I made do with what I had.
I hand quilted it with perle #8. I didn't mark it -I just quilted.
I really enjoyed working on this a little each evening. While I had visitors here for the holidays I would sometimes sit and quilt while talking but if there was any game playing I dropped the quilting and joined in the games. We are a big game playing family.
I used a soft pink 100% silky cotton pink sheet from the thrift store on the back. And the hand quilting made for some interesting designs on the back. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture. By the time I took the pic of the back my camera lens was fogging up.
The binding was a piece of pink Kona I had leftover from making the granddaughters some shorts about 7 years ago or so when their favorite color was pink.

Your scrappy quilts have so much personality and energy!! Wonderful finish.
I marvel at all you get done! We are a game playing family, too. My mother used to say, "your kids won't remember they grew up in a clean house, but they WILL remember that you took time to play a game with them." Both my adult boys love games; one wife does and the other doesn't, even though both of their boys have become game players. I guess the gene is strong.
love the scrappy look and it is so pretty
Very pretty quilt, especially against the snow! Do you have an estimate of how many quilts you will finish this year?
This quilt turned out really pretty! Your quilting looks very nice too. I just do not understand how you get so much done! ---"Love"
A fabulous finish! I love the pink hand quilting stitches!
Its awesome!! and the Name - holy cow- the name - thats the best!!
Love your quilt - made me smile when I saw the name. I wondered if that expression '3 sheets to the wind' means the same to you as it does to me (in the UK?) :)
Love it! I had to order the book!
This is a lovely, wonderfully scrappy quilt. The colors are so soft and pretty, and the hand quilting is just right. It's refreshing to come to your blog and enjoy your relaxed approach to symmetry and matching and perfection...none of which is required to make a wonderful quilt :)
A lovely scrappy quilt, and with a nod to all things vintage!
Love the look of that quilt & that you hand quilted it. I spent an hour this morning re-starting the hand quilting on a Baltimore. I had forgotten how much I love this pastime. ASk me in a couple of months to see if I still feel that way. :):)
Kay.
Great hand quilting and perfect scrappiness Cathy!
I do like the pink binding, it brings it all together.
Another great quilt finish. Your Perle hand quilting is perfect for this quilt.
Another lovely scrap quilt. Congratulations, Cathy.
Such a great scrappy quilt! Love it, and the name. Your hand quilting is definitely the icing on the cake.
Oh what a pretty and exciting quilt. I love pink and I love scrappy. We are a game playing family too largely driven by my enthusiastic son in law. “Code Names” is one current favorite.
LOVE the "background"! I'd never think of using a print, but it works so well.
Love this quilt.
The background you used is wonderful. I would have a hard time choosing something that isn't a solid! Now seeing your background, I think I could jump in and try. You remind me that I have to go to some quilt store to get sheets!
Cathy, I read this post way back last week, but never left you a comment for some reason, and I wanted to. I enjoy seeing all your scrappy quilts, but especially love this one! It's so happy and colorful, and I love that so much of the fabric is from thrifted sheets. That's something I haven't done yet. I've been wondering if your granddaughters are fighting over this one!
