Feeling Blue and Crumby And That's a Good Thing!

I haven't actively worked on my crumbs since the first year I joined in with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge which was 2013.   I made several crumb quilts that year.

This is another year for crumb quilts since I have several boxes of crumbs. Let's see how many quilts I end up with at year end.   I'm thinking of quilts in the size of about 40 x 60. You know...crumbs cost the same per yard as my other pieces of fabric so it's a shame to waste them.

I started by sorting all the blue crumbs - light, dark, aqua.  Even though we are to use light blue scraps this month I wasn't going to go that far with sorting my crumbs so I'll be set for three different months.

After I sorted out all the blues I then sorted them into larger pieces with straight sides for slab blocks.  I thought a four inch heart would be a nice thing to add to each 12 inch block.  This quilt (or quilts) will be called Heart of the Matter.

And then I sewed together most of the irregular shaped pieces - a lot of them with angles - and ended up with a big piece of fabric.

And from Cathy's Crumby Confectionery Company - Blueberry Crumby Yummies - Sweet 8 inch candy blocks.
And from a galaxy far, far away    black hole in my sewing room...8 inch crumb stars.
And some blue fish to rival Dr. Seuss's - these are Itty Bitty Nitty Gritty Fish.    In 2013 I made a larger version of the fish and ended up with a whole quilt of the little known Blue Sapphire Fish.  These Itty Bitty Nitty Gritties are their cousins but they come in all colors of the rainbow and not just blue.

Above are examples of some of the 2013 crumb quilts - Crumb Stars and Blue Sapphire Crumb Fish.  I donated most of the quilts to Quilts Beyond Borders that year.

Here's a pic of a little boy in Uganda (second from left)  who ended up with one of my quilts.

And a little girl in an Ethiopian orphanage received another.  She's the little one in front wrapped in the green crumb Bear Paw.

Got scraps or crumbs?

I have so enjoyed reading this post, Cathy, looking at all your ideas for Crumb Quilts. I particularly like theStars with the Crumb centres. Did you cut the centre squares at 4.5"? Then use 2.5" x 4.5" and 2.5" squares for the corners and star points? Thanks for showing the three finished Crumb Quilts from 2013 and the lovely photos of lucky recipients of two of your bright jolly Quilts.

Such a great idea to add those hearts into the middle of the crumb blocks! You have lots of great ways to use up the crumbs in this post. And how wonderful to see those photos of the recipients of your donation quilts - I love it!

Wow Cathy, what great crumb (mile a minute) ideas. I was wondering to do with my little leftover triangle corners and I think Crumby Yummies might just be the answer. Inspirational, thank you.

Wow!! You've made some really wonderful Crumb quilts. Quilts that I never would have thought to make crumb-y!!!

I remember those 2013 quilts and how tickled you were to see pictures of them “in the wild”! Your new quilts will be just as fun and awesome, if not more so, than the quilts from five years ago.

Just when I was wondering if I should just toss all those little pieces instead of sewing them together, you come along with a lot of good reasons to keep sewing. You amaze me with your creativity and productivity.
So fun to look at your quilts.

You are so good at finding ways to use every bit of fabric. I love them and know someone who'd like quilted fish. Hmm.

All of your crumby blocks and quilts are so beautiful and inspiring! I need to pull out my pile of blue crumbs/chunks and do something similar with them.

Cathy's Crumby Confectionery Company! You are too funny! (And those candies look delicious!) So glad you are making more fish! I made a fish quilt inspired by yours in 2016 and have another fish quilt planned for this year. The last one was crumby but this one won't be. I used so many in the past few years that I'm really low on crumbs, which makes me happy. I love seeing what you do with all your crumbs, I look forward to seeing these blocks pop up later!

Good idea to put the hearts in those blue crumb blocks. It gives your eyes something to focus on, besides the beautiful blues. Those candies are cute too, and the fish are really unique. I've never seen them before. Thanks for the little quilt show with the recipients holding their quilts. I hope you've put labels on all of your quilts.
