Green 3.5 Scrap Edition

This year as part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge I chose a UFO to work on as one of my projects. In this case I'm working on Floribunda (aka Jacob's Ladder) nine inch blocks.   I actually don't use scraps to make these but as you scroll down through this blog post you will see how I use the resulting 3.5 inch scraps left from making these blocks.   In a later blog post this month you will see how I use some of the resulting 2 inch scraps. 

Making a few of these blocks in the RSC color of the month has helped me move this UFO forward.  I now have 62 of the necessary 81 and do not get bored making a bunch of them all at one time. 

One of the blocks I'm making from the 3.5 inch scraps is Glitter (from Jen Kingwell's book Quilt Lovely).   Gayle (Mangofeet blog) is also making these blocks and has a nifty way to make templates and cut pieces from a 3.5 x 4.25 scrap. 

Also from 3.5 inch scraps I made a few six inch bow tie blocks...

And then I made a few more. 

And I made a few 3 inch Snowball blocks with muslin corners.

Multicolored Miscellany

This month our Rainbow Scrap Challenge is to use multicolored scraps. 

I made 5 large Burgoyne Surrounded blocks and used multicolored fabrics for the centers.  

I've been using leftover bits and pieces (chunks) to make these. Most of the center, multicolored bits are leftovers from various quilt backs. 

When I make these blocks I make scraps from scraps (mainly 1.5 and 2.5 scraps) so I try to make these first so I can use the 1.5 and 2.5 scraps in other RSC projects I have in the works. 

Then I made 9 Floribunda blocks using multicolored floral fabric. 

Most of these florals were not scraps but they leave me with 3.5 and 2 inch scraps I'm using in other RSC projects you will see later this month (I hope). 

I am making the Floribunda (aka Jacob's Ladder) blocks because this has been a UFO for a long time and I need quite a few more blocks to make a large bed quilt so decided I'd make a few blocks each month  as an RSC project and then use the resulting scraps all in the same month instead of letting them linger. 

From multicolored 1.5 inch scraps (from Burgoyne Surrounded above and then some) I made some little 3 inch rail blocks...

...and a few of these little 2 inch units. I'm not certain how these will end up at year end but I'll figure something out.

RSC: Purple 3.5 Edition

Floribunda

Floribunda (Jacob's Ladder) is a UFO from 2011. These are nine inch blocks and take 3.5 inch pieces. I don't have many 3.5 inch scraps - maybe a shoe box full- so I cut fabrics for these blocks.  I'll make a few blocks in yellow and florals in the RSC color of the month and hopefully have enough blocks at year end for a big quilt.   After making these blocks I had more purple 3.5 scraps. 

Goose in the Pond

Goose in the Pond is another UFO from 2014. Strange that these 15 inch blocks are also on a yellow background (Kona Corn).  Since I don't have many blocks made for this UFO I guess that I can mix up that background. We'll see.   I've been using my 30s fabrics in this block. I have no 3.5 inch 30s scraps so I cut into yardage to make these blocks.  And after I made these blocks I had some more purple 3.5 inch scraps (and 1.5 inch scraps I put into the box for another 30s UFO that takes 1.5 scraps). 

Glitter

After I made Floribunda blocks and Goose in the Pond blocks and pulled out any purple pieces from the 3.5 scrap box I cut pieces for my Glitter blocks and made some of those - my new RSC project this year. 

Snowballs, Bow Ties, Strips

From the remaining 3.5 inch scraps I made some 3 inch snowballs and some six inch bow tie blocks- new RSC projects for this year.   I also cut a few 3.5 inch squares (not shown) from the remaining small pieces to later be used in a donation quilt and if the scrap was less than 3.5 square then I sewed it into a strip as shown on the right.  Use to be determined later.  

And that ends the purple 3.5 scrap edition.

Second Verse Same as the First; A Little Bit Louder; A Little Bit Worse

I was trying to decide which of my many, many UFOs to work on and happened upon my old Floribunda quilt in a shoebox.  These are 9 inch Jacob's Ladder blocks with yellow TOT backgrounds plus a floral fabric.  I have about 25 blocks in the box plus I had these fabrics already cut for blocks so made these up to move this quilt along.  I'm not even sure how big I want to make it but I'm going to think about it so I can finish this up and move it out of here. 

And since I was working on Jacob's Ladder blocks I decided to work on some more Wild Kingdom 12 inch Jacob's Ladder blocks.  I was making these out of my huge scrappy four inch HST and four patch piles using blocks with anything that might be found in a wild kingdom.  (Remember Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins? ) Not sure I like this Jacob's Ladder layout - in fact it kind of gives me a headache because the colors and values are all over the place.  I have about 16 blocks and am going to try to make these work (sans headache) together somehow probably for a donation quilt.   I'll start by laying out the blocks like my Floribunda quilt to see how that looks.
