Gone Camping

We will be camping for a week with some of my husband's family. He is one of eight siblings and supposedly five of his siblings and their spouses will be camping. Usually we have a camping family reunion earlier in the year and several generations attend but there were a lot of reasons why we didn't meet earlier this year.

By the way, I've had those camping themed fabrics for years. Maybe it is time to make a quilt for the camper. Hmmm...uneven nine patch on point alternating with fabric squares? Economy block? Decisions. Decisions...

We were supposed to leave yesterday; however, we had another storm with high winds and rain that lasted from about 4 a.m. until 8:30 a.m.   This time only one tree fell and it was a big walnut tree that fell on the veggie garden. It crushed an old cattle gate I was using as a trellis for the Butternut squash but missed my Christmas Lima Bean pole that blew over last time.  We wanted to take out that walnut tree for a long time. It is one that grew wild and was too close to the garden and grape vines. Seems the trees always grow fastest when my husband has a medical problem that prevents him from getting out and about to help me keep the trees under control.

Black Walnuts remind me of my father-in-law. He loved black walnuts. The are very difficult to crack once the hulls have been removed. He would crack them and use them in cookies. He wasn't always careful about removing all the small pieces of walnut shells. I messed with black walnuts once and my hands were dyed brown for weeks.

We have two huge walnut trees and they certainly can be a pain. On heavy walnut years (about every other usually) we can fill bags and bags of them. We don't use them so they become compost. I absolutely love your camping fabrics! We still tent camp once or twice a year with friends. Good times.

The best "tip" I ever heard for cracking black walnuts was to put them in a bunny sack and run over it with the truck!

I was going to say, "Sorry you lost that walnut tree," but it seems maybe you were happy about it, except for the clean-up job. Your camping fabrics are really cute, and will make a fun quilt! Have fun while camping, but be careful! ---"Love"

Except for the damage to your fence trellis and the mess to clean up again, I'd be happy to be rid of the two black walnut trees that are in our neighbors yard right on the property line. Oh what a mess they make. I'm surprised your vegetable garden grows so well with the BW right there. Sorry it messed up your travel plans. Hope you can relax and enjoy the family when you get there.

Have a wonderful camping trip!
I have a black walnut tree. My chocolate lab loved cracking the nuts, but I don't use them. They sure do make a mess!
Super windy here today...large power outages all around...fires too...but Hubby and I are super blessed! We have our power and no damages!

I really like your camping fabric. I picked up something similar at Quilted Twins a few months back. We have a lot of camping memories with the kids. Sorry you have to clean up that mess. That was a big tree! Thanks to this post, I learned some things about walnut trees!

We had a black walnut tree, that left these green balls on the yard. I used hubby's golf clubs and sent them off into the big big field behind us. Some years that field had wheat or alfalfa in it. Please do not tell that farmer! They also made good in the firepit we had.

I love black walnuts! So much tastier than English walnuts, and they cost an arm and a leg at the store if you can find them at all. (It took me years to figure out why my mother's banana bread had always tasted better than mine - it finally dawned on me that she used black walnuts and I was using English walnuts.) We've got a small walnut tree, but the squirrels always beat me to the nuts...
And speaking as a basket maker, the hulls make the very best basket dye there is!
