Sister's Choice

Sister's Choice
60 x 80

I started with some swapped 6 inch nine patches in blue and tan civil war reproduction fabrics with a red center.

Then I added a tan background and blue star points and continued with red in the center sections of the outside of the nine patch to make a Sister's Choice block.

Then I sewed them all randomly together since I don't have a design wall and since it is civil war repro fabrics I didn't figure they had design walls back then either.  As you can see sometimes random sewing ends up looking not so random and the same blocks end up next to each other in a quilt.  Doesn't bother me.  Most people I give my quilts to don't hold them up to inspect layouts.

This quilt is for my husband to replace that old one he uses in his recliner.

Sometimes when I look at the quilt I see this design  (four patch in the middle) instead of the Sister's Choice.

I quilted it very simply with straight and diagonal lines on my DSM and bound it in red.

I used a wide backing printed with tan roses.

The overall quilting.

This was also my goal #3 of my Q3 Goals for the   2015 Finish Along.

This WIP is gone so I'll be linking today to WIPs Be Gone at A Quilting Reader's Garden

I really love this quilt! I have been looking at it and trying to figure out what exactly it is that grabs me. I think the tan backgrounds and the pinks added in place of the reds really give it a true vintage feel. I think not having a border does as well. I could look at this one for a long time.

I love your comment about not having design walls during Civil War times. So true!! This is a beautiful quilt. The fabrics and colors are wonderful. Nice finish!

I'm not usually a fan of red, white, and blue quilts, even with pink and red, but I gotta say this is one beautiful quilt. It makes my heart beat faster!

I often think about how we put our quilt blocks on design walls to check the layout, color placement, etc., and yet so seldom does anyone look at a whole quilt all at one time -- unless it's in a quilt show. I see quilts on beds, quilts on people curled up on couches (sometimes from the view of laying under the quilt!), and quilts folded on couches or in stacks waiting to be used.

Oh its gorgeous as usual, you always do such a lovely job on all your quilts! I need to make another Sisters Choice, I had a brain fart and sold it to a very wonderful lady for her super wonderful daughter, I know it will be loved very much but in some weird way I miss that quilt!

This is just lovely! I would SO love to see it for real instead of in an itty bitty photo on my computer screen!
I am impressed about the way you said it started with some swapped 9 patches that inspired your choice of block. Great imagination.

Hooray for a finish! Your turned the Block Swappers' 9-patches into such a nice design. Thanks for sharing the details fo the quilting, too.
