Cut!

I have not been in the sewing room much the past few days. I have been running errands ( I save them all up for one or two trips into town) and battling horseweed, pokeweed, day flower weed and bindweed (I am an organic gardener). 

My theme this month in the sewing space is "loose ends" because I sure have a lot of them. The last few days I have emptied a box of quilt back trimmings. I cut them into 1.5, 2, 2.5,3,3.5,4,4.5 and 5 inch width pieces and put them away in their respective bins. I had quite a few strings too but throw those as they occur into a box under the table.

Light and dark cornered blocks will alternate in the quilt. 

I started making these in June after I received some 6 inch width strips. I added in some greens from my scrap bag and now I have a set of 35 blocks ready for a comfort quilt. But for now the blocks are going into the SAR (Some Assembly Required) bin.

How time flies! When I started making these blocks I see from that blog post that the peonies were in bloom. So many things have bloomed since and now are starting to die back. It is almost time to start harvesting seeds for next year's gardens. "To every thing there is a season..."

The beautiful weather continues so you will probably find me outside enjoying it.

It looks like for September's Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC)  we are supposed to catch up on green and blue scraps.

Because I had some green and blue 8, 8.5 and 9 inch squares and a lot of blue and green scraps I started making these blocks for a comfort quilt in June. My goal is 35 blocks and I believe I have 21 so I might make my goal this month.

I now have reached my goal of 63 blocks. I have been making blocks off and on for over a year with floral scraps.

I emptied out the big shoe box with block centers and floral scrap chunks for the frames. The complete block set will now go into my SAR (Some Assembly Required) bin.

Once again I had to replace my husband's G-tube. Thank goodness it was not as traumatic an event for me as the first time! I am really not nurse material!

We are still having beautiful weather. I dug more potatoes and carrots and stopped to smell the roses.

Double Four Patch

I now have 192 blocks which is enough for a 12 x 16 layout for a quilt 48 x 64 inches.

A few weeks ago someone sent me a bag with some completed blocks, some four patches and some 2.5 inch squares. Since receiving the bag I have been making blocks as leader/enders. I had a wonderful time looking at fabrics as they went under the needle. I am always amazed by what fun things show up in a little 1.5 inch square. 

Now there is some assembly required.

Loose Ends: Hummingbirds and Butterflies

I am tying up some loose ends this month. Last month I made Rolling Stone/Broken Wheel blocks for a quilt started in 2023.  That left me with some 3.5 inch width and 2 inch width scraps. I cut 3.5 inch squares to make 10 Hummingbirds to be appliqued to yellow background squares. 

I'm using the Periwinkle Block Made Easy tutorial from Susie's Scraps  except I'm using 3.5 inch squares and 9 inch background squares to make my blocks.   

I also started making these blocks in 2023 and have completed 21. 

With the 2 inch width scraps I made a Beggar Block that finishes at 13.5 inches. I think it looks like butterflies. I think I will continue to make more blocks with 2 inch width scraps. I will use florals in background and the center and use gray for the butterfly bodies.  I completed a Butterfly (Beggar Block) quilt Back in 2016 that was made with 1.5 inch scraps that I love.

The four orphan blocks in the middle were given to me over a year ago. At the beginning of last month I decided to use them in a top. I then added the green and striped borders. I decided to make Nine Patches for the next border so pulled a few green scraps and a rust chunk and put them all together on the end of my ironing board. Then I had my end of August quilting marathon. 

The September theme in my sewing space is "loose ends" so I picked up my little bundle, made my Nine Patches, added my border and tied up some loose ends.

Finished a book! The Mercer Girls by Libbie Hawker. It is historical fiction inspired by the true story of The Mercer Girls -women who chose to move from the east coast of the United States to the Seattle area in the 1860s at the invitation of Asa Mercer. Mercer, an American who lived in Seattle, wanted to "import" women to the Pacific Northwest to balance the gender ratio. 

We have been having beautiful weather. It is so nice to work outside and enjoy the gardens.
