I have some yardage of a few different homespuns. I thought I would combine those with some Civil War reproduction scraps and make 12 inch The Dandy Quilt blocks. I really like this block and have made several quilts with it over the years.

Funny thing...while searching my blog for Dandy Quilts I saw that I had made quite a few blocks with scraps in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) colors of the month in 2022 and never did anything with them. Not sure where I put them. Hmmmm...

10 inch blocks

Shirts, homespun and plaid scraps combined with florals.

I have a big box of thrift store shirt scraps, homespun and plaids. I decided to make a couple of different quilts with the biggest scraps then after that I will decide on quilts to make with the smallest scraps. Moving forwarded I will probably make these as an RSC project with the floral in the color of the month. I have set aside some floral scrap chunks for these. Then I will combine with any shirtings,etc that are big enough to yield pieces for four HSTs and four 2.5 x 4.5 rectangles.

What looks like Disappearing Four Patch but made without making a Four Patch and cutting it apart.

I will probably make these as RSC project with either solid or shirt,etc scrap being the color of the month. Using 3.5 inch scraps to make these blocks.

This is the time of year when I assess all my scraps and decide how to use some of them in the new year.

CELEBRATE! (my word of the year) -

Feb. 7 - Physical therapist who comes to the house once a week is pleased with hubby's progress. His core strength has greatly improved and he is able to do a wider range of exercises. Maybe in a few months he will be able to use a cane (or nothing???) instead of a walker.   He is also finally gaining some weight and his gtube stoma is finally healing.  Celebrating forward progress. 

Feb. 8 (today) - 8am appointment with my dentist and dental hygenist. All is well! If I was a kid I suppose I'd get a smiley face sticker. I'll be 72 next month and I still have all my own teeth except for a partially false front tooth that chipped off when I was 14 and someone pushed my head into a drinking fountain at school.

A new start.

I usually use most every color scrap in my quilts and rarely pick a color scheme to make a quilt. I was thinking I would try what I would call a Boho color scheme of grays, browns, electric oranges, sky blues and saturated purples. At first I thought I would make Sawtooth Stars but then I decided upon Dandy Stars. I've made several Dandy quilts of 12 inch blocks and love them so thought I would give a smaller version a try this time.  So far I'm liking it.

CELEBRATE! (my word of the year)

Jan. 26 - Celebrating dinner on a fancy plate!     Years and years ago I used to collect cabbage rose depression glass dishes. I have plates ,cups, saucers, salt and pepper, tumblers, berry bowls and a few other pieces. I have some in amber, green and pink. I used to set a fancy table for holidays and that was the only time I used the dishes I keep in an old pie safe in the dining room.   I cleared a place in my kitchen cupboard for some of the amber plates and am going to use them for dinner every evening. Might as well serve it up on a fancy plate every day. I collected them because I love roses and the dishes are just so beautiful. Might as well use what I love. I know my kids will just sell them when all is said and done.

Ravioli with homemade sauce. The onions, peppers, garlic, tomatoes (Jersey Devil) and herbs were from my garden. Cooking for one sure takes some getting used to.

 

A Fine And Dandy Finish!

It's a finish!

And it is hand quilted.

I finished the top back in December 2020.   The center blocks were orphans. The Flying Geese and coping strip were scraps and the fabrics used are '30s reproductions. 

The block is called The Dandy Quilt and the pattern for it is at Quilter's Cache. 

I hand quilted it with blanc perle cotton #12.

The binding is scrappy.

The back is a sweet floral.

I must really like The Dandy Quilt block. I've made several Dandy Quilts over the years and I also have an incomplete block set made with floral scraps.

It's a finish!

The Dandy Quilt block pattern can be found at Quilter's Cache.  I've made several different quilts using this 12 inch block. For this one I used some patriotic prints, homespuns, plaids and florals in reds and blues. 

I was going to make it a Quilt of Valor.  Then my Hubby recently reconnected  online with a high school friend he has not seen or heard from since the friend returned from Vietnam and we were living in Florida. Gosh that was a long time ago! We are not on Facebook but his friend Bruce found my email and name from my genealogy website and sent me an email asking about  how to get in contact with Hubby. Hubby happened to mention that I make quilts and Bruce said he was fascinated by quilts. So Hubby asked if I would make a quilt for Bruce.  Hope he will be fascinated by this one when it shows up as a surprise on his doorstep in Oregon. 

I hand quilted it with perle cottons in different colors of reds and blues. 

Hey, this isn't even a UFO. I made it and finished it all this year. That's a pretty quick turnaround for me especially since it is hand quilted. (Hubby kept prodding me and nagging me to get it finished). 

The binding is the same as the backing.

It's a 60 inch wide backing that looks like chambray but isn't.

What's In The Hoop?

I finished the quilt top back in April. When I have finished the hand quilting and binding it will be sent off as a Quilt of Valor to a friend of my husband's who is a Vietnam Veteran. 

I'm doing big stitch hand quilting wither perle #12 and #8 in a variety of different reds and blues. 

I don't have air conditioning in the house but I do have it in the camper. I'm going to be leaving tomorrow on a camping trip so this quilt will be making the trip with me. 

I'll be missing you while I'm gone next week!

Purple Scraps Part I

10 inch blocks

Purple is the July Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month.  I don't have many purple scraps. I'm going to be away from home a couple of times this month so I thought I would dig right in and complete as many blocks as I could this week from those purple scraps.  I just used smaller scraps that were already cut at the width needed to make my blocks. 

The Monkey Wrench is made of purple and neutral 4.5 inch unfinished HSTs.  Most of the rest of the pieces came out of my little box of 2.5 inch squares. 

At year end these will be made into comfort quilts for kids - 24 blocks to a quilt in a 4 x 6 layout.

Dandy Quilt Blocks

I've been making these with scraps in the color of the month plus the color complement for the star points and other half of the HSTs. My goal is 30 blocks in a 5 x 6 layout for an adult sized comfort quilt.    I made QSTs with the star point cut offs. I have been collecting the little QSTs for a couple of years for my version of a vintage quilt. 

Horizon Blocks

If I have a scrap already cut 5 inches wide and at least 9.5 inches in length then I make a Horizon Block. I had some gray in with the purple scraps so might as well make those scraps into blocks too.  I really should count how many I have and figure out how many are needed for a quilt. I have quite a pile of these now and they will probably be made into quilts for kids. 

Windmill Blocks

Can be cut from 2.5 or 4.5 inch scraps.   I'm making them with dark and light scraps in the color of the month. The light is the background.

I have quite a few of these now. I should take count. They will be made into donation quilts.

7.5 inch blocks

Made with 3.5 and 2 inch scraps. I've been making these for a couple of years. I think my goal is 99 blocks and I think I only have 17 more blocks to go. Most of those will be brown. I've already picked through my 3.5 inch squares and found sets of four brown squares to complete my remaining blocks.  

Postage Stamp Pandemic (PSP20)

I've been making these for a couple of years - at the start of the pandemic in 2020. . I think my goal is 121 blocks and I may have over one hundred blocks now. Little by little...

Then I have 3 inch Snowballs with light corners. I'm going to alternate them with some old 3 inch Nine Patches I have with light corners.   The switch plate blocks (3 x 5) can be cut from 3.5 or 1.5 inch scraps.  There's a 3.5 inch width strip for a future Chinese Coin quilt made with pieces less than a 3.5 inch square and 3 inch Square in Square blocks with white on black corners.

The Dandy Quilt Block is a Quilter's Cache pattern.

Tickled Pink!

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month is pink. 

Last week I mentioned I had a lot of larger pink scraps around 4.5 to 5 inches in width. So I started pairing some pinks with some grays and started making 4.5 inch (unfinished) HSTs. After that I had a lot of pink 4.5 inch squares and pieces left so I made a second quilt top.

There's lots of different pinks and grays. I don't have a design wall and usually just sew blocks together randomly. For this one I didn't exactly sew the 4 Patch HST blocks together in a totally random manner - I tried to put all the lighter blocks near the top and darker near the bottom as I webbed blocks together.

The second top is a Wiggle Time variation -- I made a version bigger than the pattern  so this top measures 60 x 76. I also made my "wiggles" scrappy but all in pink. 

I hunted around for something to use for the background and came up with an old pink floral in my stash. If I didn't have enough of that I was thinking of going scrappy neutral for the background. 

Some of the lighter pink squares kind of blend into the background but I think after it is quilted with some garlands of flowers in pink thread it will be okay. 

Both quilts will be donation quilts someday when all is said and done. 

And there's more...

If there was enough of the 4.5 inch strip left to cut two 2.5 x 4.5 pieces then I did. And then I made some Hearts for a quilt I'm making for me with red, pink and white hearts. I'm making it in memory of my granddaughter Kayla who recently died from "probable cardiac arrhythmia". 

The hearts have "flippy corners" on the bottom and the cutoffs were made into bonus HSTs which were then sewn into strips of five for a slow moving quilt inspired by a vintage one. 

Then I combined some 4.5 inch scraps with some 2.5 inch scraps and made a couple of Dandy Blocks...

...and a few Bear Paws for the growing collection. 

Speaking of growing collections...I made a few 8 Patch blocks. I had a few 2.5 inch width pieces that yielded four 2.5 x 3.5 cuts so I combined them with some previously cut pieces in that project box. 

While I was in that 8 Patch project box I matched up some previously cut pieces and made a few more blocks. 

Then any 4.5 inch scraps left got cut into squares if possible. Same with the leftover 2.5 inch scraps - squares and/or 1.5 x 2.5 inch pieces for the Lego Project box. 

Any pieces less than a 4.5 inch square was sewn into a strip for a future Chinese Coin quilt. 

Then I made a few Horizon blocks for my collection with some 5 x 9.5 pieces. 

Yes, I do have some pink scraps left  - mostly strings and crumbs I think.
