 In 2020 I started making several different blocks that used 3.5 and 2 inch pieces. I cut those width pieces from a scrap "chunk" in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month and then used those scraps in several different quilt blocks. Buckeye Beauty was one of those blocks. 

For these blocks I combined scraps in the RSC color Of the month with shirts from the thrift store or black multicolor scraps or red multicolor scraps.   The blocks finish at six inches. 

I finished the top back in June 2022.

I quilted into it on my sewing machine on the diagonals.

I had a lot of black multicolor pieces in the leftover binding box that I used for the binding.

I have been using a bolt of black and white daisies this month. I think I will be able to use it on the back of four quilts. This is quilt #2.

Looks like I started this top in 2022.

When I got it out of the project box this month I only had three rows made. This month I made 17 more rows. 

I used 4.5 inch squares of old shirts and floral 2.5 inch squares for the corners. 

I was inspired by this vintage quilt. I don't remember source of the photo. 

And now I have emptied that project box and added one to the TBQ (to be quilted) pile.

Over the last couple of months I've made a pile of blocks I sewed as leader/enders. To be close to an ailing husband I moved my sewing machine upstairs to the dining room table to be near him should he need attention. He is too sick and weak to do too much on his own right now. My ironing board and cutting mat are still downstairs in my little sewing space so I don't get down often enough to be able to iron and take photos of all my leader/enders. 

These blocks are called Starry Path. I have been making them with '30s repro fabrics and old shirts.  I was inspired by a vintage quilt and did not know the name of the block. I figured out how to make the blocks and asked visitors to my blog back in October to name the block.  

I'm aiming for 35 blocks and now have 10.

The blocks have been in my SAR (Some Assembly Required) bin since last year.  The blocks finish at 6 x 8 inches and are made of two sets of four rectangles 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Although they could be strip pieced I prefer to cut pieces to size first and sew them together especially since some of the rectangles in the shirts had to be cut separately because there was not one piece long enough for a strip. 

This is one of several block sets I made last year when I was working with '30s repro fabrics and old shirts and other plaids. 

This month the theme in my sewing room is 1930s so this one made it out of the SAR and into the TBQ (To Be Quilted) pile and may even get finished by the end of the month if I find a backing.

Shirts and Giggles

Inspired by a vintage quilt.

Made with thrift store shirts (shirts) and fabrics I thought might look like dresses my grandmother wore back in the day (giggles) - 1930s reproduction fabrics. 

My grandmother who taught me to sew used old clothes to make her quilts and I used to love to look at all the fabrics. Sometimes she would tell me stories about the fabrics - "that used to be Uncle Leo's shirt and then later I cut it up to make a shirt for your Dad" (13 years younger than his brother Leo) or "your Aunt Betty made that dress to wear to a dance and many dances thereafter then she handed it down to your Aunt Elsie and later I made an apron out of it".

Last year I received a box of scraps that included some 4.5 inch shirt squares.  After I finished my quilt Scared Shirtless in September of last year I used the leftover solids...

...and sashed some sets of four squares.  And then left those blocks at the end of my ironing board until I could decide what to do with them.  (Ooops...I see a safety pin. As I quilt on my DSM I mark spots with a safety pin where I need to bury my knots. I guess I missed this one.)

In February of this year I decided to clear off the end of my ironing board and do something with the blocks and I ended up with a flimsy.  I first cut more squares from my box of old shirts and made enough blocks for a good sized donation quilt and then basically I kept sashing sets of four blocks until I could sash no more. 

After all the squares were sashed then my next set of four blocks was sashed with a wide floral and solid four patches as cornerstones as you see above. 

Then four of those blocks got sashed with a skinny solid and a floral cornerstone like the dark blue you see here...

...and the darker brown you see here. 

Then finally those blocks were sashed with the skinny floral with solid cornerstones. 

Then I backed it with a sheet and quilted it on my DSM with horizontal and vertical lines in light gray thread. I had just enough of that wild floral to use for binding.

Four by Four

Sets of four sashed until they could be sashed no more. 

It all started with some 4.5 inch squares I received last year in some boxes of scrappy goodness from Nice Nancy.  I decided I would work toward a twin sized donation quilt.  I started out by sashing sets of four squares with a solid brown or blue.  I ended up with 24 nine inch (finished) blocks.  Hmmm....what next? I have a box of shirt parts so cut enough 4.5 inch squares to make 24 more blocks.   So, forty-eight blocks would not quite be enough for a nice twin sized quilt so hmmmm...what next? 

 I added some sugar and spice and sashed sets of four blocks with a 2 inch floral.  A lot of my grandma's quilts were made of old shirts and dresses so I guess the idea was grandma inspired. I made little four patches for the corner stones out of the leftovers from the first sashing. Blocks then measured 20 inches (finished) and I had twelve of them. With a layout of 3 x 4 that would be a quilt 60 x 80- a nice size but still a bit smaller than I wanted. 

 Then, those sets of four blocks were sashed with a 1.5 inch brown or blue solid.  Blocks were getting bigger and I had two full blocks that were 41 inches square and two half blocks 41 x 20. 

 And finally I sashed those sets of four blocks with a 1 inch floral sashing and magically the top was all together. 

  And finally I sashed those sets of four blocks with a 1 inch floral sashing and magically I had a top. Good thing because I really don't like sashing a quilt but this was kind of fun. Each of the original squares has some type of sashing around it and I enjoyed the process.

It seems we have had a lot of family and friends diagnosed with catastrophic illnesses this year so my little stack of comfort quilts has pretty much been depleted. This will be put away for the next comfort quilt need. I really hope I don't have to give it if it means someone needs to get sick. 

 The actual quilt name is "For the Boys" from the book Quilt Lovely by Jen Kingwell.  The pattern made a square quilt so I modified it and made mine longer. 

There's lots of reasons to make a quilt.  I made this one to use some men's shirts scraps. 

 I had to do some piecing of itty bitty bits in order to have enough brown and blue solids to complete the quilt. I don't have any other blue solid in that color so I thought I might have to substitute a tone on tone or other blue solid but I scraped by. 

 As you can see I just did some easy peasy straight line quilting both vertically and horizontally. 

I didn't have enough blue or brown for the binding and I thought of using some shirts for a scrappy binding but ended up using the backing fabric for binding instead. I thought it might be kind of light but there's a lot of lighter shirts used in the quilt so I think it worked out okay. 

I used a wide backing that had blue, brown and yellow in it called Scratch Marks.

I'm thinking I may add a nine inch version of those center Broken Wheel blocks to the top and bottom of the quilt in order to make it longer.  A 76 x 94 seems more suitable for a bed than a 76 inch square one. 

 Inspired by a vintage quilt it consists of Broken Wheels, Puss in the Corners and Flying Geese. 

 I used old men's shirts from the thrift store and some fabric from stash I thought looked like old grandma dresses. 

 I'm happy with how it turned out but I really think I want to make it longer.  I'll set it aside for awhile an then decide.  I also need to figure out what to use for the backing. Heaven knows I have a lot of other things to work on and get quilted before this one so I'm not in any hurry. 

This is the vintage quilt that inspired mine. It was for sale on Ebay once upon a time. 

Shirts and Giggles - The Latest Border

I've added a border of Flying Geese to my vintage inspired quilt I'm calling Shirts and Giggles. 

It is now a 52 inch square. 

I made the Flying Geese from old shirts (SHIRTS) and some fabrics that I thought looked like old grandma dresses (GIGGLES). 

 Now I need to do some math to figure out the next border - Puss in the Corner blocks and sashing. I'm thinking I won't add the sashing between blocks but time will tell. 

 This is my inspiration. 

It was a vintage quilt for sale once upon a time on Ebay.

It's a pattern called "For the Boys" in Jen Kingwell's book Quilt Lovely. Her version is 67 x 67 but I added a couple of rows to make it longer. 

I started this in September 2017. It is made of men's shirts. I wanted to get this to flimsy stage so I could see how much shirt fabric was left over.   Now that I know I can continue on with my vintage inspired quilt that has no name yet but I'm leaning toward Shirts and Grins or Shirts and Giggles or Shirts and Skirts.  More on that quilt later after I make a round of Flying Geese.
