A Different Kind Of Pickle Dish

Pickle Dishes
87 x 91

It is a pattern from the book Making Quilts by Kathy Doughty.

This week I made and added the borders.

I'm glad I finally have finished the top. It is one of my oldest UFOs. It has a sort of Boho vibe I like.

Now I need to figure out what to use for backing and I will big stitch hand quilt it. I will use the rest of that terra cotta solid for the binding.

And sew on...

It has been raining off and on all week so I have not done much gardening. I did take some photos.

Last year I made a seating area close to the house for my husband John. Most of my gardens are a long walk from the house. John has a difficult time getting around so that is why I made this garden for him. The area is next to an old falling down chicken coop and has a couple of very old rusty swing sets cemented into the ground. The swing sets were here when we moved here over 35 years ago. They haven't had swings for a number of years and were over run with wild black raspberries. I cleared the area and decided to fill it with fragrant flowers - oriental and orienpet lilies, species tulips, hyacinths, Russian sage, clary sage, chocolate daisies, dianthus and stocks. There are 5 roses in the garden. I have a climbing rose on each side of the swing set that I hope will grow up and cover the swing set.

Four o'clocks. Actually they don't open at four o'clock. They open based on temperature. They are also scented when open. They are an annual here but I have read that They produce a tuber that can be dug in fall and stored and replanted in Spring. I'm going to try that this year and also save seeds like usual.

More Four O'clock and Russian Sage.

When seated in the swing set fragrant garden you can see a Zinnia patch and Tithonia (Mexican Sunflower) near the bird feeders.

There are still Monarchs around.

And I spy a hummingbird in the Zinnias.

I tried to get a good photo of the hummingbird but it kept flitting from one flower to another.

Meanwhile the Monarchs hung out in the Tithonia.

And that is the story of the fragrant garden I made for John. Not bad for year one!

Loving the Boho feel to this one, Cathy--it really came out beautifully.
You have grown such beautiful flower--and those roses are gorgeous...I never had any luck with roses (haha and my name is Julierose<!!) so I always grew peonies...but this year my one lone plant didn't do well at all. Yesterday I pulled off all my green tomatoes and plunked them in a brown paper bag to ripen...the squirrels were eating them on me!! :((((
Hope your week is going well--we are finally getting some rain here--at long last!! Hugs, Julierose

You got out of the bias-tape pickle just fine. The text print is a wonderful background. John's garden spot is lovely!

When I saw this top I just knew you would hand quilt it. It is truly special and I love the mix of fabrics. You've created a special garden for John, so lovely.

Love the Boho quilt! You’ve definitely put much work into that & it shows! When I first saw it, I thought of something I’d see if I were in India. I’m sure your hubby enjoys the beautiful garden you’ve set up for him ❤️ - Beth in AL

Amazing Pickle Dish quilt! I love the garden you created for John, you have two of my favourites there - roses and zinnias. Our zinnias finished a month or so ago, looking forward to sowing seed soon.

What an outstanding post today! I always admired the pickle dish but never thought I had the patience to make one. You did a beautiful job and then you topped it off with flowers and birds and butterflies. I find it hard to get pics of the birds. It seems like they know they are being photographed! Your flowers are beautiful and I love how you made a garden just for John to enjoy. You put a lot of work into that. I'm looking forward to next year to see what grows over the swing.
