I've been making Crooked Rail blocks since about the middle of last year. I'm using a dark and light scrap in the RSC color of the month. I'm using 3 and/or 3.5 inch width scraps and cutting rectangles 3 x 3.5. Each block uses 8 rectangles each of two different fabrics.   I have several of Kathy Doughty's books and she uses these stack and whack wonky units in several of her quilts; however, she doesn't have any Crooked Rail blocks like these in her books. I make the units and have used them in lots of different ways.

For the geometric,etc. pile of blocks.

Made with 4.5 inch width scraps; 4.5 x 5 inch rectangles. These are the same type of units used in the Crooked Rails. 

I made a bunch of the blocks in the RSC color of the month plus gray scraps. Last year I made a big stack of them and then divided them into piles for different quilts. I have already made the Wonky Windmill top with the novelty blocks but I need a few more blocks for the geometric, etc. pile and a few more blocks for the floral pile and then I will be finished with these blocks. My goal to use up a lot of small gray scrap chunks has been already accomplished.

I had a few multicolor scraps cut for the blocks so they alo got made this week.

2.5 x 6 unfinished

I've been using 2.5 x 4 inch scraps in the RSC color of the month and 2.5 inch black squares to make these units. Intent is to use shorter lengths of 2.5 inch width scraps.

These are the final two blocks needed to complete the goal of 24 blocks for a kiddo comfort quilt.

Where Did Those Yellow Scraps Go?

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color this month is yellow. At the beginning of the month I didn't think I had very many yellow scraps; however, here it is another week and I'm still using yellow scraps.

I now have 29 toward my goal of 35. 

I have a box of 4 inch width scraps I want to empty and this is one of the blocks I'm making with the longer scraps.

I now have 48 blocks toward a goal of 88.

These are also made with 4 inch width scraps.

16 Patch

I set aside a few red, blue and yellow novelties to use in this quilt. I also try to match up the novelty with a scrap from the 3 inch width scrap box if I can. If not I cut from a scrap chunk. 

I only need four more blocks toward my goall of 24. Maybe (or maybe not) I will make up the other four this week and get that top assembled. 

A couple more 16 Patch in red, blue, yellow. 

After I cut a 3 inch width piece off of that chunk of yellow fabric with colorful lizards I had a 2 inch width strip left so I made a couple of six inch 16 Patches alternating with green for my collection that now numbers 111 blocks. My goal is 120 or 130. Gosh, maybe (or maybe not) this week I will make 9 more 16 Patch blocks and make a top. I'll have to look at what I have in 2 inch width strips. 

Sawtooth Stars

(aka Orphan Curtis because I've used orphan blocks as the centers)

Last year when I was working on emptying out a box of 3 inch width scraps I made a lot of tops. I didn't get around to finishing this one up but kitted up 5.5 inch (unfinished) orphan blocks with 3 inch width scraps to be used for the star points. These were the ones that had yellow scraps for the points. I only have 5 more blocks to make. Maybe (or maybe not) this week???

From a Youtube video. I rarely watch them because my computer takes forever to load them and then they are sometimes broken up; however, someone sent me the link so thought I would check it out. 

These units finish at 2.5 x 8.5 and consist of two 3 x 6 inch rectangles. 

The units get staggered a little so there are no seams to match.   I will be adding a 3.5 inch unfinished scrappy border. 

I now have 64 toward my goal of 88 (I think).

Sawtooth Stars with Orphan Block Centers

I now have 12 of 24 blocks

Last year I was cleaning out a box of  inch width scraps and made 10 quilt tops. This was one of the tops that didn't get finished. I did set aside in a ziplock bag enough 5.5 inch unfinished orphan blocks and 3 inch width scraps enough for star points.  This month I pulled out the orphans that were matched up with blue scraps for the star points. I'm using the same background on all blocks in the quilt.

Made with 3 inch squares. 

I have 45 blocks and 96 is the goal. 

Sixteen Patch

10 inch

Strip pieced with 3 inch width novelty scraps.

I'm using only reds, blues and yellows. 

I have 10 out of a goal of 24 blocks. 

Someone gave me ten 25 Patch blocks made of 2.5 inch squares.  I decided to make 14 more blocks for a kiddo sized top in a 4 x 6 layout. At first I thought I would make enough for a larger quiltt of 48 blocks but I've used up most of my 2.5 inch squares.  I did go through my squares to see if I had enough for a blue block. After that I went through the squares to look for 25 of the same color and made those blocks. 

So now I have 16 blocks. 

And now I'm thinking I might alternate the blocks with 10 inch Sawtooth Stars and go for the goal of 48 blocks - 24 Stars and 24 Patches.

I made a few last year to use up some 3 inch width scraps. 

I made these units this month with blue and pink 3 inch rectangles I cut last year. 

I haven't trimmed off the flippy corners yet so they wouldn't stick to my little batting covered cutting mat so I could take a pic. I'm going to use those waste triangles as some points on Wonky Stars. 

I now have 48 of 84 units. 

I still have blue scraps and have pieces for more blocks cut from mostly 3.5 inch width blue scraps so I think I will be Singing Verse V of the Blues next week
