Little Windmills
in a quilt top.
60 x 80
300 Little Windmills
made from 1.5 inch width scraps
that finish at 4 inches.
I think I might have started making them back in 2022. I was making lots of blocks from 1.5 inch width scraps back then and emptied out a bin of that size scrap in November of that year.
In October of 2024 I met my goal of 300 blocks and put them in a bag and put the bag into the Some Assembly Required (SAR) bin.
One of the things I'm working with this month is 1.5 inch scraps so I pulled the bag of these blocks and assembled the top and emptied the bag.
I sewed them together randomly. I don't use a design wall. If I did I know myself well enough to know I would be screwing around arranging and rearranging blocks forever - never quite satisfied with any layout. And I figure these quilts are made for comfort so no sense in spending all my time looking for a layout that appears perfect to me. Hopefully in the future the quilt will be hugging a person and not a wall.
However, if I do have a lot of blocks I divide them up into light, medium, dark and as I web the top together I try to keep the lighter ones on top and work down to the darker ones. And since I'm webbing the top I can see as I web what blocks will be next to each other so I can avoid putting two of similar color next to each other.
WITB (What's in the Box, Bin, Bag) is the theme in my sewing space for the month of March. I'm wondering how many boxes, bins and bags I can empty.
With this quilt top I was able to empty a grocery bag of Windmill blocks that was in the SAR bin.
I'm keeping score:
Boxes:
1- Coins
2 - Legos
Bags:
1 - Kaleidoscope
2 - solid 1.5 inch strips for 51 Waffles
3 - 1.5 inch strips for 9 Legos
4 - Windmill blocks
I'll also be working with yellow scraps this month because that is the March Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color.
And I don't always follow the challenges issued by the Scrapbuster group but this month the challenge is 1.5 inch scraps. I have some of those!
And sew on...

REMEMBER, TREASURE, GROW, READ (my words of the year)
The last few days we have had beautiful weather so I have spent most of my days outside gardening. It is so nice to be outside with my hands in the dirt...down and dirty...yes! I've been so busy that I haven't had time to blog about all my outside fun but in a few days we are expecting some rain so maybe I can catch up on blog writing about GROWing.
READ - I also finished a book. More on that later. I have to go look up the title.
TREASURE -
I received kind words, a beautiful piece of fabric with roses and a cute little origami cloth butterfly from Chantal. I think I might have to make a few of those. It is so cute!
I received a tin of chocolate truffles and dark chocolate pecan clusters in the mail. Surprise! They were from hubby, John. You know...I haven't eaten any chocolate candies in over two years. (I've just never ever bought it for myself). I forgot what I was missing!
Oh joy! Life is good.

that candy sounds wonderful - I love tins or boxes of chocolates! I love that quilt looks nice and easy and a good way to use the scraps. Just turn this or that way and you have a block
Oh wow! You received it already? I'm so please it didn't took as long as I thought it would. Enjoy! I use to have a tutorial on my blog for that butterfly. I retrieved it a long time ago. I will put it back up again just for you. 😊 I'm happy you like the fabric.
Your quilt is wonderful. I was confused when I read you sewed them randomly. I sure looked to me that the lighter ones are on top and when I continued reading... yep, I was right. I love when you put the lighter ones together. It's different from most quilt on the net. Bravo for this accomplishment. Now go play in the dirt before it rains. Enjoy! ;^)
Loving these little windmills, Cathy--lovely colors sprinkled across this one...
Have fun in your garden...hugs, Julierose
I love your little windmills, and the gradation of light to dark works beautifully!
I love it—“hugging a person and not a wall”!! I’m gonna remember that when I’m fussing over just *where* that block should go…😜🤣🤩👍🏻 NancyO
I love those little windmill blocks, all blowing around in the sun in such lovely colours. What a lovely surprise that your hubby ordered you a chocolate treat.
Your windmill blocks made into a great top! I hear you when you write you want to keep rearranging the blocks.Your webbing process is a good way to ensure you don't have two of the same prints together.
What a sweet chocolate treat!!
that quilt is awesome - I think the color placements are just perfect and will be loved!
Cathy, sadly once again I am in catch up mode but I've loved looking down through your posts with your usual colourful quilts. Your Lego is a masterpiece - 1.5" scraps, good gracious, I once made a Lego but with pretty good sized pieces. Love the name Waffles for your quilt shown March 6th and your sunny kaleidoscope is a beautiful sunny gem - you create the most wonderful scrap quilts of any quilter that I know of.
Love your scrappy windmill quilt, so bright and cheerful. Chocolates in the mail, who wouldn't have loved that?!
Wow, that's a lot of windmills! But that quilt is so CUTE! Whoever gets that donation will love it!
Such a great quilt top, Cathy - I love all that color! So much fun from 1.5 inch strips!
Your hubby is a treasure - I love how he shares these little surprises with you.
Very pretty! Isn't it amazing how those little blocks eventually add up to a good sized quilt. I love the "Some Assembly Required" bin. I have a couple of those too unfortunately.
