December always seems to be a month where I flit around from one project to the next and it's also a month I always seem to start a lot of new quilts. Flitting...that's a funny word, isn't it?
Well, anyway, I worked on something old - Broken Wheels. I started making these blocks in February of this year, made six blocks and never looked back. However, I have been adding purples, reds and aquas to the project box all year as I come across them. The little project box was getting too full of bits and pieces of fabric so I decided to flit on over to it, take out some fabrics that looked pretty good together and made six more blocks. Now hopefully I will make a few more, enough for a quilt, in the new year. These are nine inch blocks and I hope to have enough for a nice sized throw when all is said and done.

You may remember a few weeks ago I started making a different Hummingbird quilt. That will be my Rainbow Scrap Challenge project. I am using a different method to make those blocks. While researching how to make a Hummingbird/Periwinkle/Arkansas Snowflake quilt I came across a method at Susie's Scraps that uses squares to make a block appliqued to a background square. I thought it would be fun to give that method a try too. I used 3.5 inch squares cut from those Broken Wheel scraps and will use a yellow background - squares cut at 9 inches. That size background square leaves a scant 1/4 inch seam all around so I'm hoping the Hummingbird points will match up when blocks are sewn together. And if they don't...well, that's another story for another day.

I'm old and blue.
Ok. Well, I'm not really blue. It's more like I'm old and gray.
And woohoo... I have a few more days left to flit around this month so flit I will. Stay tuned...

I just love those purple and aqua fabrics. Love the Hummingbird too. Flitting? Well, not only do you inspire me but also teach me new English words. Keep flitting. ;^)
Love your blocks, love the definition of flitting. I've always ascribed flitting to hummingbirds. Flitting is much sweeter than squirreling. May you forever find the joy and excitement of a new project.

Love your two new block designs Cathy. The colours are gorgeous. I love the word flitting - i also associate it with butterflies flitting from flower to flower. I think your feet are too firmly on the ground to flit! I can however imagine you striding purposefully from one project to the next. Keep on flitting/striding forth into 2024 because I love seeing what you produce along the way.
Flitting is a word I grew up with -- and lately it has described my state of mind as well as the birds in the back yard (grin). You are so good with using brave background colors!
I adore your Broken Wheels! I've had that one on my to-do list for quite a while, but I hadn't pictured them in the glorious colors you've picked out! I'm now updating my plan!
Your Broken Wheels look like Rolling Stones, a block I always liked but haven't made yet. They look like fun, especially in those colors. What size fabric do you need for each block? I've tried the Hummingbird/Periwinkle blocks recently on a small scale hoping to eventually make myself a bed size quilt - Ha! It was foundation paper piecing and I was trying to eke out enough pieces from some scraps of 1930s repros that I liked. I really hated the process and got very discouraged. I spent way too much time with Jack but I was determined to get them right. Maybe if I used bigger pieces of fabric, it wouldn't be so difficult. I do have plenty of fabric to choose from. That was my effort at trying to work "outside of my comfort zone"!
