Roll, Roll Cotton Boll - Spiraling Out of Control!

I worked on quilting one of my oldest flimsies - one of two Bonnie Hunter mysteries I have made. 

Roll, Roll Cotton Boll 

I quilted it on my DSM with some spirals. I figured that would go with a quilt by that name and it's one of the few free motion quilting things I know how to do.

It's far too large for my husband to even hold up while standing on a chair. 

(I usually hang the quilts out on the clothesline even in winter for some pictures but I'm not going out in 19 inches of snow and drifts)

I remember that with this quilt it was the first time I tried using an Easy Angle ruler for the HSTs. After that I was hooked and make HSTs no other way. 

It doesn't look like it from afar but it used up a LOT of scraps...

...and I mean a LOT of scraps.   When I dug this flimsy out of the box it was in I also found the left over scraps that were scraps from this quilt so not all scraps were used in the making of this quilt. 

I used muslin for the backing. I use muslin a lot for backs - just like grandma used to do. 

 I think I'll put it on the guest bed. 

I'm just glad it's out of the UFO pile and in the finished pile.

10 x 4 Apples Up on Top

I've finished another quilt for the hope chest.   This time it is a quilt for my first great grandchild.  It may be awhile - my grandkids aren't even in their teens yet. 

I decided to call the quilt 10 x 4 Apples Up on Top and put one of my kid's old books (probably about 40 years old, read a lot and falling apart) with it in the hope chest. 

The quilt is made of 30s reproduction fabrics. Some of the blocks are from a couple of different swaps - one of apples and the other of 9 patches. 

I hand quilted it with #8 red perle cotton.

This is the first quilt from my 2015 30s Bin Bust Challenge.

Slow Sunday Stitching - Partly By Oil Lamp

I put the final big stitches on my Apple/9 Patch quilt very early this morning and was heading downstairs to the sewing machine to cut and sew on the binding...

...when the power went out because of the snow storm. It doesn't look like much but so far I think we have 9 inches of heavy, wet snow.  It's so heavy that we have a couple of small tress down in back. I heard a crack. looked out of  the back window and saw one drop.  I'm hoping none of the fruit trees down in the orchard are damaged. 

I had nothing else but the Apple Quilt binding lined up for hand stitching so while the power was out I lit the oil lamp and worked on a shawl I'm making for one of my granddaughters for Christmas. I took a good look at it (of course after I added a few new rows) and I don't think my gauge is right because it will be a short shawl even for a little girl if I continue on.  I guess there's a reason you're supposed to check gauge. So, I'll be undoing all my work and look to see if I have a larger hook or I'll use a different pattern. I have two books of shawls. 

Power is back on now.  It's still snowing and starting to blow. Neighbor has been over with his tractor to clear out our driveway (he won't take money but he likes the homemade bread we give him in return) so I'll probably be able to make it to work tomorrow, and I'm on my way to sew on my binding.

Little Blue Pills

Blue Lozenges 

2.5 x 5 (2 x 4.5 finished)

I think I just made 54 of them. 

Tedious work if you are not a leader/ender personality type. 

Lozenges remind me of cough drops. Cough drops remind me of horehound. Horehound reminds me of bitter pills to swallow. Pills remind me of "don't be such a pill" which reminds me of tedious and monotonous.  

These lozenges are tedious and monotonous to make so I shall call them Bitter Pills. 

I started making these maybe in the middle of  last year. They are a good use of 2.5 inch scraps and they are kind of a fun fabric catalog. When I don't have anything better to do I guess I'll count all the Bitter Pills and see how many I have. Surely there's enough for some cute little quilt.  Hmmm, I don't see any Pink Pills in the pile. Maybe I'll wait until after next month to count.

...to complete a flimsy 80 x 80 - 25 blocks consisting of 16 - 4.5 inch HSTs.
That's 400 scrappy HSTs!

Thirties Thursday - Seeing Stars

This week for my 30s reproduction fabric bin bust I made four 12 inch star blocks to add to the "birthday star" pile.    Last year I belonged to a birthday club and requested any 12 inch star block with a blue background  in 30s reproduction fabric.  I received 11 gorgeous blocks. Since then I've been making other star blocks.   I want a total of 42 different stars and I think I'm over the halfway mark. 

This week the blocks are:

I've made 15 of these 12 inch blocks in civil war repro scraps, a golden tan and Kona Snow.  Twelve of the best blocks will go toward a swap with some lovely members of the Block Swappers Yahoo Group. The gracious hostess (and self-proclaimed cw fabric snob)  is none other than Vic of Park Hill Farm.    

(It's already on my UFO list...I made one block last year).
