1930s

I'm using mostly 1930s reproduction fabrics in my string stars. Star is Kona Spring which is very close to the color of green my grandma used in her quilts in the '30s.

And I finished a few more 1930 reproduction fabric basket blocks with scrappy flowers for an upcoming swap.

Rainbow of Favorite Things

Working on sewing together my 6 inch hexies into a Rainbow of Favorite Things. It's been a UFO for far too long.

Singing the Blues

This month's color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge  is sapphire blue (not aqua/teal/turquoise, not pastel/light). I had set aside a bunch of 2.5 inch strips left over from other projects to use in a QOV quilt. Lots of the strips are blue so I stitched up some 6 inch Twinkler blocks

Next I added some 3 inch spools to my collection. I just participated in a 1.5 inch strip swap and pulled the blues to work with from the lovely pile of fabrics. 

I also just participated in a 3 inch 9 patch swap so pulled the ones with blue in them to make into my 5 inch Sister's Choice blocks.   All of the blocks, no matter what color the 9 patch, have scrappy blue points. I now have 132- 5 inch blocks and figure I need 288 for a good sized quilt.  So, I guess I'm not even half way there ;-(

Izzy's Wedding Quilt Update - 98 Arches Finished and Moving on to Next Step!

I've finished all 98 arches I need for the double wedding ring quilt I'm making for my granddaughter, Isabelle.  I'm not in any hurry. She's only 8. After a car accident (no injuries but lots of car damage caused by some other driver running a red light) a few months ago she told me I was going to live long enough to go to her wedding. And she's mentioned that several times since.   So, if I can't be there physically then I will be there in spirit with a quilt as a gift for her.  

My next step will be to connect the arches with a center of this yellow floral fabric that I'm afraid to cut into since it cost so much. 

I also need to make some 4 patches for the ends of the arches. I may do that first.

It's For the Birds Blog Hop

I'd like to thank Mary, of I Piece 2 - Mary and Madame Samm of Sew We Quilt for all their work organizing this "It's For the Birds" blog hop.  I've managed to make a few Christmas gifts with a bird theme that I'd like to show off today. 

OWLS

My first project is an owl themed lap quilt made up of some novelty owl fabrics and fall fabrics from my stash. Blocks measure 12 inches. Finished quilt is 48.5 x 60.5 and the pattern I used is called "Feed Sacks" from "Scrap Basket Surprises" by Kim Brackett.  It was quick and easy to assemble. 

I had to piece the backing because I didn't have as much of the bird themed fabric I thought I had! 

I free motion quilted some leaves on my DSM. (Yes, they are supposed to be leaves!)  I'm not quite sure WHO will get this as their Christmas gift....WHO? WHO? 

CHICKENS

I have a large collection of both old and new embroidery transfers. I don't remember where I picked up "Barnyard Happenings" but I love to embroider dish towels for Christmas gifts. Sometimes I pick up a package of the cheaper flour sack dishtowels from Walmart and other times I use the heavier, bigger and a little nicer ones from JoAnn's if I have a coupon.  Either way...I prewash the towels before I stamp and embroider. 

Thursday is market day in the barnyard.  For gift giving I also make hot pads/potholders to go with the dishtowelss. I used some polka dots and chicken/rooster fabrics I had in my stash. It has a pocket so you can use with your hand inside if you wish. I used Insulbrite and an old towel for batting. Combine with a chicken kitchen magnet found on clearance and a crocheted dish cloth and I can cross someone off my Christmas list and it's only May! 

Monday is wash day in the barnyard. This time I'm showing the reverse side of a second potholder/hot pad made of the same fabrics and same way as the one above, another chicken refrig magnet and another crocheted dish cloth.  And, I can cross off another name from my Christmas list.

Crazy Today

I've finished my May block for the CQJP 2013 Journal Project.   

Chocolate Truffles...

...rickrack to mimic the chocolate papers...cupcake ribbon...feather stitch...

...chocolate colored buttonhole wheels...buttons that look like cookies to me...is what the May block is all about.   Along with all the other blocks I hope to have a lap quilt someday called "Crazy Cravings". 

I've randomly pinned together all the blocks finished so far plus the one I'm working on for June so I can check out how my "Crazy Cravings" lap quilt looks so far. 

And since I'll be doing some slow stitching today on my June block (lower right) I'm linking up with some other slow stitchers at Kathy's Quilts for Slow Stitching Sunday.

Way down deep in the ocean depths dwells the Sapphire Crumb Fish that only special people can see. What do you see?


Fish inspired by a Flickr photo. A link to the photo was posted at the Sunshine Online Quilt Guild Yahoo Group in response to ideas for using floral fabrics to make "kid-friendly" quilts.  I decided it would look cute in crumbs too.  I've challenged myself to use my scraps this year for donation quilts. I'm anxious to see how many I get made and donated.

And, talk about challenges...the color of the month is Sapphire Blue  for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013.      (Pastel blue and teal/aqua/turquoise will be later). Do check out what everyone is doing with scraps now that they are feeling a little blue at the RSC 2013 linky party at SoScrappy.
