Hummingbird? Periwinkle? Arkansas Snowflake?

I spent some time the last few evenings working to applique a few Hummingbird blocks to add to my collection.   I'm using the Periwinkle Block Made Easy tutorial from Susie's Scraps  except I'm ussing 3.5 inch squares and 9 inch background squares to make my blocks.

Most of the squares are scraps leftover from making Rolling Stone blocks but some squares came out of my 3.5 inch squares box.   I think I have used three different pieces of solid yellow for the background squares so far and I may have to buy a piece of yellow solid to finish up enough blocks for a throw.

My Hummingbird quilt was inspired by a quilt that appeared in the July/August 2011 issue of Quiltmaker that was made by Minnie Jacoby Schultz c 1930.

And sew on...

CELEBRATE! (My word of the year)

Feb. 24 - Crocus!  I had one tiny bunch pop up a week or so ago and then that clump disappeared when we had a snowfall. But now they are everywhere in the lawn near the clothesline where they have naturalized over the last several years. In the language of flowers crocus represents cheerfulness. Indeed!

I don't know if you can see all the little purple clumps in the lawn.
Each little clump looks like this up close.

Feb. 25 - I already celebrated a little bit when I woke up this morning and found a hibiscus flower in bloom in my living room.  Several years ago my husband brought home a hibiscus full of blooms that he found on clearance. Oh it was beautiful but he did not notice that the huge plant was not hardy in our zone. So every year we put it out on the deck when the weather warms up and then in the winter I take it inside and try to find a spot for it.  This year it is in the living room right inside the deck door. Seems a little early for it to be blooming.  In the language of flowers hibiscus symbolizes delicate beauty.

I definitely think crocus flowers are cheerful! And so are your hummingbird blocks! I will have to check out that tutorial to see how they're made. That's one I've never tried. Have a great Sunday, Cathy!

What a great tutorial on making hummingbird blocks! I like your yellow background. My friend, Martha, loved planting bulbs in the lawn. She said it was like haiving multiple carpets outside! Your purple carpet is beautiful!

Well, you had me until applique. They are gorgeous. Waiting to see the crocus leaves burst out. Daffodil leaves up about an inch. Great red bloom!

I do like your colourful Hummingbirds and you've made my day by showing the photo of your crocus bunch. I grew up with crocus around me in the fields when I was a girl back in Lancashire, I always looked forward to seeing them peep out of the ground, thank you!

Pretty periwinkle blocks. We always had crocus where I grew up in Norway and I always enjoyed seeing them popping up early spring. Indeed they are cheerful, makes on happy. Gorgeous hibiscus flower too. Many people here have them in their garden, in all colors. Have a great week!

The only plant in my house is an artificial olive tree! I'm almost jealous. You grow beautiful flowers and you make beautiful scrap quilts.

My crocuses are just starting to open up. I love your hummingbird blocks. The yellow makes them pop.

You are such an inspiration! I love reading about your quilt projects, your gardening and, most of all your outlook on life in general. I always walk away looking for things in my own little part of the planet to celebrate.

I'm in the perfect zone for hibiscus. Sadly, iguanas that have been a growing problem here and, it's one of their favorite foods (though they tend to view my entire garden as their personal smorgasbord). I was happy today to look out my sewing room window to see several open blooms before they're devoured for someone's lunch.

The periwinkle is not a block that I have tried. My Mom made a great scrappy one for my daughter when she was little.
I cannot grow hibiscus either. I didn't realize that perhaps I could have one blooming in the house! Cool! :)

Hummingbirds are looking good. Loved reading the language of love meanings.

Cheerfulness indeed! It's hard to imagine a flower more cheerful than a crocus!
And I had no idea that you could get a hibiscus to bloom indoors...
