Monkey Wrench Blocks

For quite awhile I've been making Monkey Wrench blocks from scraps in 3 different sizes as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project. Someone gave me a baggie of colorful 4.5 inch HST parts. I pulled out all sets of four and paired them up with a neutral to make HSTs. I have been cutting 2.5 inch width scraps that are long enough for four squares into squares for my Monkey Wrench project box. So I pulled out some of those squares and paired them up with more neutral squares to make Monkey Wrench blocks for donation quilts. I have a big collection of blocks now so after I finish putting the pile of 7.5 inch Monkey Wrench blocks into quilt tops then I will start on the 10 inch pile.
Now I have sets of 2 HST parts as well as single HST parts to deal with but there are not many of those. The pairs will probably be paired with pairs of the same color for Broken Dishes blocks and the single HSTs will probably go into the Parts Dept.
And sew on...

I have been following your blog for many years and your logical way of using scraps never ceases to amaze me. This last post is a good example of that. Okay, I do this, then that with these leftovers and the other thing with the rest of the leftovers….. a logical movement forward from one set of scraps, finishing in several different projects. An idea suddenly came into my head having read your post today - it’s like a game of chess, this move leads to the next move and the next until you win the game. Are you a Chess player as well, Cathy?
The neat aspect to Monkey Wrench blocks is the "notched" effect of the center units when they're sewn one next to the other. Even when the blocks are in different colors the notches make the connection. How many is "a big pile"?
I really think the monkey wrench may be the perfect quilt block. Fun to make, fun to look at, fun to play with. And you always end up with a fabulous quilt (just before you start making even more monkey wrench blocks, because honestly, who could stop?)
