Wednesday Wandering: Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

There have been a lot of misty moisty mornings (and afternoons and evenings) around here lately. And it is so humid I feel like a raincloud is hanging over my head while I'm sitting at the sewing machine. Everything feels wet. It's been too wet to work out in the gardens this week but I have managed to go out in between raindrops to take a few photos of the lilies in bloom. I have lilies of all sorts - daylilies, asiatic lilies and oriental lilies and new this year I have orienpet (or tree) lilies that are a cross  between oriental and trumpet lilies.  The rain is supposed to stop tomorrow and it is supposed to get a little cooler so gardening will resume after that.  The gardening will probably consist of lots of weed pulling. And to think I was all caught up on my weeding before these rains. But we needed the rain. We were in a drought but I think we are out of it now. The Iowa cornfields are now knee high and it's almost the Fourth of July. And that's a good thing!

So without further ado...the lilies in bloom in my garden this week...

 

Sugarloaf Leftovers

I finished my Sugarloaf Star quilt top (pattern: Flashes of Brilliance by Pam Buda) back in January of this year.  Since then I've had a little box of the leftover strip set pieces and cut off ends on my cutting table. I decided I should empty the box. 

The Sugarloaf Stars were made up of six Sugarloaf wedges.  

So I decided to see how many wedges I could get out of my leftover strip sets. 

I was kind of surprised to find out...

...I could make 33 wedges from those leftovers. 

I decided to see how they would look alternating with solid yellow wedges. I have several different pieces of different solid yellows. Yeah, that looks pretty good. (You know the alternating solid color is subject to change.) So I kind of roughly drafted out how many Sugarloaf Wedges and alternate solid wedges I would need for a nice throw. 

Then I started making more Sugarloaf wedges. Looks like I can get 8 wedges from a strip set so I think I only have about 4 more strip sets to make 32 more wedges. I said I THINK because I'm not sure what I did with that rough draft now.

Moving An Old UFO Forward

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for June has been purple. I used most of my purple scrap chunks making what RSC blocks I could and then decided to move on to a UFO that has purple in it.  Back in 2016 I won a Block Lotto. About 50 Split Nine Patches made their way to my doorstep. 

There were specific instructions as to how to assemble the blocks with a dark, light and two medium value fabrics in grays and purples. 

Somewhere along the line I made up pieces including the HSTs for 20 more blocks. 

So I sewed up those 20 blocks.

And then I decided 120 six inch blocks would make a nice sized donation quilt  with blocks in a 10 x 12 layout.  So I made up the pieces for about 45 more blocks. 

Now I am looking forward to the RSC color for July.

Tales From The Scrap Yard: #10

A new top!

Back on March 24 I received several bags of scraps and I decided to document  with "Tales From The Scrap Yard" how many donation quilts I could make from those scraps. I've been trying to make the quilts all different.  I sorted the scraps into different bins and boxes and this is the second quilt to come out of the brown scraps. I added in some of my own scraps (blue,white, red plaids and green and red stripe) to pick up the colors of some of the cars and trucks in the square that makes up the star. 

This is quilt top #10 and when finished will probably be donated to Quilts Beyond Borders. 

This is the last quilt to come from the bags of scraps. The remaining scraps will get mixed with mine. Most of those scraps will go into slab, crumb and string quilts. 

This was a fun exercise in scrap usage.

Another Mystery Solved

It's now a flimsy!

For a couple of weeks in May I followed along and made different four inch blocks every day and then went out and did my gardening.  I kept up with all the clues and although Edyta did give placement of the blocks every day I don't have a design wall so I just made my blocks and put them in a little box.  On a rainy day I decided I should attempt to get the blocks sewn together. It took me an entire day of arranging and rearranging blocks on my floor according to the layout plan. Ugh, what a backache! I had it for days. 

I used all sorts of odds and ends of different blue scraps. All of the blocks were easy to make. I didn't have to watch any videos to make the blocks, thank goodness, because my old laptop does not do well when it comes to videos. 

I kind of thought my quilt looked like a jumbled mess of blue so I didn't add any fancy border. But now that I see it hanging from afar...Surprise!!!... I kind of like it. That was a good use of some blue scraps! Now it will join the Edyta Sitar Mystery 2020 in the quilting pile.
