Heartstrings
or Wonky Log Cabins with Hearts in the middle.
12 inch (finished) blocks
I made a couple of blocks last December when I noticed my string scrap box overflowing.
Now I have 8 blocks and need 7 more for a total of 15 blocks. I'll then put them in 3 columns and either add scrappy 2.5 inch strips in between columns or as an outside border in order to reach a 40 inch width. Then I'll make a wild and crazy child sized comfort quilt.
First I have to make more hearts for the centers.
I don't actually cut strings for a quilt. They just happen - quilt back trimmings, odd sized ends of fabric, wonky cuts. The only thing I have to cut is the length of the string as I go around the centers log cabin style. I'm trying to use the most colorful ones for this quilt.
I have a tab at the top of my blog of other string quilts I've made if you are interested. It includes several variations of the Wonky Log Cabin.
And sew on...
A child will love those blocks. The skinny strings make such a great frame.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fun idea for sewing up strings! I love the hearts in the middle - perfect for February sewing.
ReplyDeleteThese blocks are fabulous! I have so many string scraps and the more I use them, the more they multiply! I have been thinking of adding four patch hearts to a project I am working on but was worried about how tiny they would be. These help me to decide to do them!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be so cute and happy. Perfect for a comfort quilt.
ReplyDeleteI have to address the string box(ex) soon as they are taking over. I'm on a mission to reduce the strings, and strips and squares I have cut ala Bonnie Hunter as it's all just chaos and driving me buggy.

Love these bright Heart string blocks. They will make a super quilt! Bet you are enjoying making these, Cathy.
ReplyDeletePretty wonky blocks, love the heart in the center. Looks so fun to make.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten about Pneuma (the low volume strings) - I love that one. Your colorful hearts are going to make a terrific quilt!
ReplyDeleteThose blocks are adorable. I think I'll use your idea for a donation quilt. I have strings that "just happen", too!
