Old Italian (aka X Blocks)
3 inch finished
Light green or light neutrals is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month. I'm finishing up some scraps in all shades of green this month.
The Old Italian blocks are a "cut and shuffle" type block- stack up 6 squares (I'm using 5 inch), make a few cuts, shuffle around the pieces and then sew together. I used a tutorial found at My Joyful Journey that includes instructions for X blocks in other sizes as well as the 3 inch.
Zip Blocks

QST Four Patch
6 inch finished
Broken Dishes
3 inch finished
The QST Four Patch will alternate with a plain old Four Patch when all is said and done. I use an Easy Angle Companion ruler to cut the QST parts from a 2 inch width strip. The Broken Dishes blocks are a result of HSTs cut at the beginning and end of that same strip with an Easy Angle ruler. I'm aiming for 65 QST Four Patch blocks and I think I'm only a few blocks from my goal so maybe I'll finish those up before year end so I don't carry this project into 2023. (Gosh,, wasn't it just Y2K yesterday?)
And sew on...
Just beautiful blocks--loving that Old Italian one--so pretty all in a row...
ReplyDeletein all those green fabrics..nice work.
hugs for a great weekend of sewing and gardening...Julierose
Wow, the Old Italian blocks are gorgeous, and I love their small size. They look very pretty all together.
ReplyDeleteWonderful blocks! Yes it was Y2K last year!!!
ReplyDeleteYour fabric choices for the X blocks are so uplifting. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteAll terrific scrap blocks. The hourglass/QST will look interesting with plain 4ps
ReplyDeleteSome great blocks. Love the x ones, colours really shine.
ReplyDeleteAnother batch of great blocks! I love the Old Italian blocks, but with all that rotary cutting I’d probably best stay away from them!!
ReplyDeleteI love your Old Italian blocks! Sounds like a fun way to make several blocks at a time!
ReplyDeleteI made x blocks this year too, but one at a time...very colorful cathy!
ReplyDeleteOh, now you've done it, Tom Jones is singing in my head! Thanks for the link to the X block tutorial. Great green scrap blocks!
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad that I am finally back on your email notifications. I love to see what you are up to! A lot of inspiration.
ReplyDeleteSo many pretty green! Green is one of those colors that I can’t get enough of. Light, lime, sage, mint, forest, olive, army, emerald, ! Doesn’t matter, I like green!
ReplyDeleteI love your Old Italian blocks! Even though I'm not fond of green, when mixed with all of those other beautiful colors, they look great. I've made a couple of mini quilts myself with that block. Do you always figure out how many blocks you are going to need ahead of time? I never do because I usually don't know how they are going to be set. I just start sewing the blocks until I decide what to do.
ReplyDeleteThe old Italian blocks are my favorite. Love the title of your post. Mad me hum that old tune in my head.
ReplyDeleteYour three works in progress are so appealing, the Old Italian blocks win every time for me, love them.
ReplyDeleteThe green, orange and blue X blocks are making me swoon! Wonderful combination of color going on here!
