Indian Hatchet Blocks
4 inch finished
inspired by a vintage quilt
A little pile of 2 inch width scrap pieces accumulated on the side of my cutting mat. I decided it was time to process that pile. If the piece was long enough for 8 HSTs (cut with Easy Angle ruler) then I cut out the HSTs and used them as corners for some sets of four 2.5 squares I have set aside into the Indian Hatchet project box.
Bow Ties
3 inch finished blocks
Then if the strip was at least 5 inches in width I cut pieces for and made little Bow Ties. My goal is 900 blocks and so far I think I have 380 of them.
Any pieces that ended up less than a 2 inch square was sewn into strips for future Chinese Coins quilts.
Before I got to the Chinese Coins strips I cut any pieces that would yield four 2 inch squares for the Monkey Wrench project box to be used when I make the 7.5 inch version of the Monkey Wrench block. I also cut any neutrals into sets of four squares for the same Monkey Wrenches. Any single neutral squares also went into that box to be used as centers for the Monkey Wrenches.
And sorry for the blurry photo but any other squares that were not sets of four went into the 2 inch squares box to be used at some later date in who knows what.
And sew on...
Your scrap processing is like a factory! You truly use it all! I can't imagine making 980 blocks!
ReplyDeleteI could get a lot more done too if I could just make up my mind on projects and fabric to use on them. I get so stuck with this.
ReplyDeleteOh, Cathy, you're giving me ideas again . . . Love the improv (wonky) hatchets. And the skinny-knot bowties, too.
ReplyDeleteI think I would need to have a sheet of paper with the block names and how much of each square is needed as more than one set of numbers makes my head swim.
ReplyDeleteSuch tiny little blocks. They are going to make some lovely quilts. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Terry; your sewing room is like a factory. Start big and use it until it is all gone. You are an inspiration for us all. Bravo! ;^)
ReplyDeleteLove all this scrap processing!
ReplyDeleteI do admire the way you can work with the smallest scrap Cathy, you have far more patience than I. I look forward to seeing posts of the finished tops in these photos.
ReplyDeleteYou are so organised processing your scraps. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I visited today. Your scrappy blocks are little beauties. THese will look so wonderful in a quilt or two someday. This inspires me to go sort some of my scraps, which always seem to be in abundance! Happy Stitching, Cathy.
