I mentioned in a previous blog post that I was going to dig into a little box of '30s reproduction bits and pieces and make a few baby quilts. And as I previously posted I started with completing a block set started last year. The last few days I've been working with those bits and pieces to see how many baby quilts I could make. I've added four more block sets to my SAR (Some Assembly Required) box and almost emptied the '30s repro bits and pieces box. I'll assemble the tops at a later date. I have to get some quilts quilted before I assemble any more.
Snowballs and Nine Patches
49 six inch finished blocks
With a 7 x 7 block layout the quilt will finish at 42 inches square.
I combined the prints with muslin.
I'm not sure if this is a block or a unit. I've made these six inch finished blocks in the past with various rectangular centers (strings, crumbs, single fabric rectangle) that measure 4.5 x 6.5 then 1.5 inch x 6.5 inch sides are added to make a 6.5 inch square. Alternate the orientation of squares and it makes a kind of woven look. For this one I made four patch centers using 2.5 x 3.5 rectangles. I really wanted to add yellow sides but didn't have enough of any yellow fabric but did have a big enough piece of a light orange so that's what I used. I think I have a cute orange print I can use for the backing but not sure there's enough so I'll probably have to piece it.
49 units set 7 x 7 will make a quilt 42 inches square.
Happy Blocks
24 ten inch finished blocks
6.5 inch square centers and 2.5 x 6.5 and 2.5 x 10.5 sides in solids.
There were four blocks each with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet centers. I framed the blocks in the color complement of the center.
With a 4 x 6 layout the quilt will finish at 40 x 60.
Sixteen Patch
24 ten inch blocks that finish at 10 inches
With a layout of 4 x 6 blocks the quilt will finish at 40 x 60
I used 3 inch width strips to strip piece these.
I combined the prints with plaids in this one.
I could probably squeeze out one more small quilt or add blocks to the Snowball/Nine Patch quit to make it bigger but I want to move on to something else now. These were easy to work on the last few days in between clearing scrub brush from the property, weeding, canning tomatoes and processing/freezing green and wax beans.
And sew on...
Sounds like you need to sit down and put your feet up for a bit! Though knowing you, you'd only do it for about 5 minutes before you'd be up and off on another project!
ReplyDeleteNice work on using up some of your 30's scraps, Cathy!! With squeezing four block sets out of them, I can see why you might want to move on to something different.
ReplyDeleteAll lovely ideas, great ways to Sue all your 30s scraps. And you sound busy in the garden and canning. What energy you have!
ReplyDeleteCathy, you are a Pied Piper of quilt design. We can only trail you trying to grab the block ideas you fling as you go. We can't catch 'em all!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't mind, I am going to adopt your "Some Assembly Required" phrase for several of mine that are started but set aside until needed. Thirties fabrics are always so wonderful - I never get tired of them.
ReplyDeleteThose are so cute
ReplyDeleteI really like the 9 patch and snowball one
Always a pleasure to see you exuberant color schemes! :)
ReplyDeleteSome Assembly Required sounds a great idea! I love your nine patch and snowball blocks , this will be a gorgeous baby quilt.
