Two New Comfort Quilt Tops
Hollow Nines
45 x 60
I've been making these blocks since last year in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month. They are made with 3 inch squares and finish at 7.5 inches.
I rarely have scraps that are 3 inches in width. I didn't cut many 3 inch strips to cut into squares. I kind of collected them as I sorted scraps and if there was enough scraps collected in the RSC color of the month I made a block or two.
And that's why it took me so long to make 48 blocks for this top. And now I can cross this block off of my long list of RSC blocks to make each month if possible.
Bricks and Stones
40 x 59.5
After I made the Hollow Nine blocks I had some 3 inch width pieces I had collected left over. So I cut a few (112 to be exact) 3 x 6 inch bricks. For the stones I cut 3 inch squares from lots of different yellow bits and pieces. I used yellow for the stones because it will be a comfort (donation) quilt and yellow seems to add a bit of joy to any quilt.
Like the Hollow Nines there's a mixed variety of scraps in this one.
Now I have some 3 inch squares left and I think I will make a few Four Patches and see how many I end up with. There may be enough for another top and if not then I do have some 5.5 inch squares in the Parts Department that I may be able to add to them. Time will tell.
And sew on...
You are at full steam! 2 new scrappy delicious quilt, so colorful and happy and for a great cause. Congrats!!
ReplyDeleteI like the hollow 9's the best. Adding it to my list! :0)
ReplyDeleteI really like the hollow 9s. Great work on the scrap challenge. I am adding hollows 9s to my list too! Stay safe and sew on !
ReplyDeleteThose are happy, colorful quilts! The bricks and stones look like sunlight coming through the curtains - such a pretty effect!
ReplyDeleteTwo colourful RSC flimsies, Cathy. The Hollow 9 patch really appeals to me. I like the way you have combined more “regular” blocks with more scrappy ones. Very effective and lots to catch the eye. You are really motoring with putting together your sets of blocks.
ReplyDeleteI like the variations in the hollow nine patches, with both totally scrappy and more planned blocks. I started some hollow nine patches, but have fallen behind. I think I'll just wait until the next go round to catch up on the missing colors. Right now it's too hot to think about sewing.

Just a few, 112 to be exact! That's so understated, Cathy. Both your quilt tops look great well done!
ReplyDeleteMore great progress on comfort quilts.
ReplyDeleteTwo more beautiful, colour-filled quits from you Cathy, may they bring much comfort to those who receive them.
ReplyDeleteTwo more beauties! Look at you go!
ReplyDeleteI admit that I just slice my 3" scraps into 1.5" strips. Between my 4-patches, my 9-patches, and my Easy Peasy blocks, I use a ton of 1.5" pieces!
These quilts are just full of fun happy colors!
ReplyDeleteBoth of these are marvelous - scrappy and cheerful and destined to be loved by the recipients!
ReplyDeleteI like the hollow nines in the 3 inch size! Very nice. The one I did was smaller squares, 2” ones. I have some left over but not enough for a quilt. Haven’t decided what to do!
ReplyDeleteLove your scrappy quilts so much! Thanks for all the inspiration “
Cheerful & colorful! these would make fantastic snuggle quilts
